The City of Millbrae has multiple openings for the Recreation Leader (Summer Camp Counselor) position! This position will focus on our Millbrae Adventure Summer Camp, working as a Camp Counselor.  Hours will vary, and applicants are expected to be available to work full camp weeks. Recreation Leaders are also expected to attend a mandatory, paid training.

Definition: Under supervision, to provide leadership to recreation programs, activities or service; organizes and implements program elements and oversees participants; and performs related work as required.  This is a temporary part-time non-benefited position. 

Essential Duties:  Depending upon assignment, the duties of a Summer Camp Counselor - Recreation Leader I , II or III may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assists in planning, organizing, and leading summer camp activities.
• Organizes, inventories and maintains necessary facilities and materials.
• Maintains group and individual discipline. 
• Facilitates safe and positive camp experiences
• Follow written curriculum to implement activities including arts and crafts, group games, and sports.  
• Keeps records of attendance, participation.
• Typical duties include: implementation of camp curriculum, record keeping, maintaining supplies, and supervising groups of youth aged 3 to 12.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Special Requirements:   Vision adequate to supervise participants in recreational programs; speak clearly; ability to bend stoop or crouch; physical stamina to supervise groups of youth participating in recreational programs; ability to work off-hours, shifts or events as required; strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds; and the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: 

• Common crafts, sports, games and recreation activities appropriate for all ages.
• Principles and methods used in organizing, conducting and supervising a program of recreational activities.
• Record keeping techniques.
• Basic first aid and safety practices and procedures.
• Basic youth development principles.

 Ability to: 

• Conduct daily camp operations including leading groups, activities, field trips, and set-up/break down of activities.
• Prioritize and handle multiple program tasks.
• Think and act quickly in emergencies.
• Judge situations and people accurately.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public.
• Perform work in a safe manner.
• Perform the physical duties of the job.

Education & Experience: 

Recreation Leader I:  Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 15 at time of appointment.  Must possess a work-permit. No previous experience required.

Recreation Leader II:  Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 16 at time of appointment.  Equivalent to three (3) months of full-time experience (approximately 500 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience in recreation programs or equivalent. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable. 

Recreation Leader III:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12) grade.  Equivalent to six (6) months full-time experience (approximately 1000 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience equivalent to a Recreation Leader II with the City of Millbrae. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable.

Certificates:  Must possess a first aid/CPR certification, or be willing to obtain one. 

Service Standards:  

Must successfully complete background process.  All candidates will be fingerprinted pursuant to California State Law.  All successful candidates under age 18 must possess a work permit prior to hire.

Recreation Leader Requirement

• Provide guidance, support, and motivation to all campers.

• Communicate with guardians of campers, providing updates where required and answering questions about camp.

Recreation Specialist I/II (Group Leads) $22.94 - $30.66

This is a part-time position.  Hours will range from 19 to 37 hours per week with no weekend shifts.

The City of San Bruno Fire Department offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a Fire Cadet. Our one-year Fire Cadet program is an unpaid, volunteer work experience program that offers hands-on training, and introductory knowledge of firefighting skills, fire service tools and equipment. Cadets respond to emergency calls, render Basic Life Support and participate in training, and participate in the daily station duties.

Cadets must be willing to commit to 24-hour shifts, two to four times per month. The cadet program is one year in length. Upon completion, this program meets the manipulative training and experience requirements in obtaining a California State Fire Marshal’s Office Firefighter II certification.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• State of California EMT or National Registry EMT certification
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and a driving record with minimal violations
• Possession of a Firefighter I Academy certification (or proof of “student in good standing” letter signed by an Academy Instructor if currently enrolled)
• 18 years of age at the time of application

What You’ll Do

• Support the preparation, implementation, and monitoring of a comprehensive risk-based emergency management and community preparedness program.
• Prepare and maintain municipal emergency operations plans, annexes, appendixes, checklists, and other supporting documentation.
• Respond to the Emergency Operations Center when it is activated.
• Design and administer communication plans to enable effective municipal and community response to a disaster situation.
• Continually monitor and assess municipalities’ training programs and research methods to increase community outreach.
• Maintain records of findings and corrective actions identified through After-Action Reports/Improvement Plans, and coordinate development of multiyear Training and Exercise Plans.
• Produce training materials, including written documents, electronic media, and videos; maintain materials, such as props, slides, videos, films, and other educational documents; set up and operate appropriate and different audiovisual equipment. Develop working relationships with and make presentations to representatives of municipal departments, as well as other public and private support relief agencies, businesses, schools, homeowners, non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) and other community groups regarding emergency services.
• Participate in the budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates and revenue projections for budget recommendations for designated accounts; submit justifications of program and related activities; monitor and control expenditures.
• Participate in specialized training, conferences and seminars as available and appropriate to maintain technical knowledge.
• Compile and analyze data; prepare reports and make recommendations on the formulation of policy and procedures, EOC and division staffing and organizational changes.
• Participate in administering contracts including those relating to grant projects; monitor programs for compliance with applicable regulations.
• Coordinate and conduct interagency training sessions on NIMS, ICS, and other emergency management topics for municipal personnel to establish and operate an Emergency Operations Center (EOC); maintain records of NIMS/ICS training in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
• Provide oversight and program delivery of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program.
• Develop training curricula/plans, coordinate logistics, promote and deliver public education programs to civic organizations, religious institutions, businesses, and residents.
• Design, develop and deliver a variety of disaster exercises designed to test elements of the municipalities’ emergency capabilities according to Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program guidance.
• Support facilitation of stakeholders in exercise planning meetings.

The City of Belmont is seeking a Senior Lifeguard/Pool Manager to supervise the Summer Aquatics Program at the Carlmont Aquatics Facility located at 1400 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont, CA 94002

Salary (depending on experience) and Hours:

Monday – Friday Shifts - NO WEEKENDS!

Pay range depending on experience $23.97 - $29.14

Typical shift is from 9:15AM-5:15PM Monday-Thursday and Friday 9:15AM-3:30PM.

• Must have at least one summer of supervisory experience.

• Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification preferred.

What You Will Do

• Supervise and ensure patron safety at all times, including clearly and professionally conveying rules to patrons and enforcing facility regulations.

• Administer first aid and provide emergency care as required.

• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and with exposure to pool chemicals.

What You Will Do

Lifeguards/Swim Instructors will ensure the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies and instructing swim lessons for participants of all ages.

The essential functions of this position include: maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; act immediately and appropriately to ensure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency; provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services; perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility; prepare and maintain appropriate reports; possess thorough knowledge of rescue techniques; understand and enforcement of facility rules, policies and procedures, demonstrate leadership, public relations skills and decision-making skills.

In addition, Swim Instructors are responsible for instructing all swim lesson participants, ensuring the safety of all participants in their class, evaluating students participating in swim lessons, submitting completed participant report cards on time, and attending mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled.

Under direct supervision, a Recreator I performs assigned tasks which serve the public use of municipal recreation facilities and performs other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Open and close facilities following established guidelines, set up equipment needed for facility programs, perform routine maintenance and clean up for assigned facilities, collect fees for facility use, maintain order and discipline in assigned facilities and programs by enforcing City and Departmental policies, may assist in assigned program areas, may supervise volunteers or court workers as assigned, and maintain accurate records and reports.  May include specific assignments such as cashiering, attending to locker rooms, aiding with swim instruction, staffing facilities used by the public, and assisting with recreational programming.  Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: General facility operations, basic lesson instruction techniques for an assigned area, and safety practices for assigned programs.

Ability to: Follow written and oral instructions, meet and communicate effectively with members of the public, and carry out assignments requiring average physical strength such as setting up tables and chairs.  Learn and progress in this position, direct others, understand and enforce written and oral rules, regulations and policies, solve minor disciplinary problems, interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Experience:  No previous work experience is required; however experience in working or volunteering with people is desirable.

Monitor youth sports programs within the facilities; address participant and parent concerns; provide lead direction to sports officials. Routinely adhere to and maintain a positive attitude toward City and Department goals.

Knowledge Of:

Basic office/customer service skills (answering phone calls, talking to patrons etc.)

Emphasis Two: LIFEGUARD:

Example of Duties:

Educate patrons in water safety, provide patrons with a safe aquatic environment, perform lifeguard secondary duties, and instruct swim lessons. Promote aquatic programs, assisting senior guard, and aquatics assistant. Conduct rescue operations and administer CPR and First Aid. Direct communication and contact with swimmers and the public.

Knowledge of:

Basic child guidance principles and practices. General techniques of various swim strokes.

Ability to:

Be active, lift and/or carry equipment and supplies. Work in a leadership role with children and adults

Certification:

Possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required to work in Aquatics area as a lifeguard. Possession of an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification is desirable to work in the Aquatics area as swim instructor. 

Emphasis Three: YOUTH PROGRAM LEADER:

Ongoing programs and upcoming events. Child development services, operations, and activities. Basic computer applications such as word processing and databases

Work well with children. Able to provide encouragement for participation in programs.

Emphasis Four:  OLDER ADULT VOLUNTEER & PROGRAM SUPPORT

Examples of Duties:

Assists in daily operation of Doelger Senior Center supporting volunteers and programs.  Contributes to welcoming and safe environment, able to respectfully set boundaries.  May participate in community outreach and education efforts.  Attends trainings as directed by supervisor.

Knowledge of: 

Superior customer service; basic office procedures; Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher); volunteer management and Registration management applications; and programs and service providers for older adults.

Ability to:

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing; maintain confidential records; work well with older adults (50+); organize schedules; meet deadlines; learn on the job; collaborate with patrons, volunteers and colleagues across City departments.  Fluency in Spanish, Cantonese or Tagalog a plus.
