ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is seeking a dedicated part-time Assistant Fleet Technician to join our esteemed Fleet Division within the Public Works Department. As a member of our team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the high-quality repair and maintenance of all city-owned vehicles, heavy trucks, and equipment.

Under the direction of the Senior Equipment Mechanic and the Fleet & Facilities Superintendent, the Assistant Fleet Technician role offers an outstanding opportunity to launch a career in fleet maintenance. This entry-level position is ideal for motivated individuals eager to gain practical, hands-on experience in municipal fleet maintenance operations while working alongside experienced mechanics in a dynamic public safety environment. 

In this role you will assist with routine and preventative maintenance such as oil and filter changes, rotate and replace tires, replace batteries, support inspections and further repairs, and contribute to the upkeep of specialized public safety vehicles and equipment. Additionally, you will support the installation and maintenance of emergency lighting and siren systems, sub-electrical panels and related electrical components, and assist with computer hardware and other specialized equipment utilized in public safety and fleet operations. The Fleet Division at the City of Gilroy is dedicated to delivering high-quality repair and maintenance services for all city-owned vehicles, heavy trucks, and equipment. Our mission is to ensure the safe and efficient operation of these essential assets, contributing to the seamless delivery of municipal services to our community. The Department

The Human Services Department (HSD) delivers and supports services by forging long-term community partnerships, engaging with and building the capacity of the community to do its own problem-solving, and leveraging financial and volunteer resources.

The Position

The Program Coordinator will provide supervision and oversight of the Fremont Family Resource Center (FRC) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). In addition, this position will be responsible for overall FRC communications, marketing, and event planning. This position will be required to work a varied work schedule which will include weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays.

Examples of Job Duties

• VITA program design and implementation. Duties include, but not limited to:
  • Ensure VITA site compliance as outlined by the IRS.
  • Manage and update calendaring system.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of VITA site(s) to include set-up (moving furniture, setting up laptops and printers, preparing food, clean-up, and washing dishes). Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds with help from other staff.
  • Meet with VITA coaches to develop, coordinate, and deliver training curriculum.
  • Maintain program documentation and write reports.
  • Recruit volunteers and attend county-wide meetings as appropriate.
• Serve as marketing, communication, and service integration lead for the Fremont Family Resource Center. Must be comfortable with public speaking, creating and delivering presentations.
• Plan, coordinate, and implement the Fremont Family Resource Center annual Day Away Conference and other FRC events.

The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about working with the public and have a genuine interest in coaching and serving as positive role models in their community. This role involves teaching the fundamentals of various sports, as well as coaching, refereeing, and scorekeeping for both youth and adult sports programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Coach and referee youth & adult sports programs to maintain standards of play and ensure the safety of all participants.

• Teach and explain the rules and regulations of basketball, volleyball, baseball, etc.

• Confer with other coaches/referees, players and facility managers in order to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems.

• Score keep or referee games as assigned.

• Maintain the gymnasium area including equipment and facility.

• Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

• Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned.

• Certification as a California Notary Public is desirable.

Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record at the time of appointment is required as a condition of initial and continued employment only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than the employee's ability to get to/from various work locations in a timely manner, is necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Ash Street Summer Program: Monday-Friday: June 22-July 24, 10:30am – 3:30pm, no camp on July 3 

Camp Newark: Monday-Friday: June 8– July 31, 7:30 am – 4:15 pm, morning and midday shifts available.

The General Maintenance Worker plays a vital role in keeping our communities and centers clean, safe, and visually appealing. This position focuses on a specific set of tasks tailored to meet the needs of the Recreation & Community Services Department, differing from the broader responsibilities of a full General Maintenance Worker under the Public Works Department. The Recreation Coordinator or Recreation and Community Services Supervisor is the key point of contact for this position, providing general direction and/or supervision.

1. Field Preparation: Assist t with basic field preparation for baseball and softball, including tasks like dragging the infield play area, marking chalk lines, and other essential setup activities.
    
2. Groundskeeping: Support keeping the exterior areas of community centers clean and presentable by removing trash and maintaining general tidiness. Assist with watering and care of indoor plants within recreation centers as needed.
    
3. Facility Cleaning: Perform light janitorial duties, including cleaning restrooms, fitness centers, and lobbies.
    
4. Events & Equipment Support: Assist with event setup and teardown once events are completed. Maintain special event equipment, furniture and supplies and promptly report any damaged or broken items to a supervisor for replacement.

Camp Newark is seeking a confident, creative, and organized leader to serve as an Activity Coordinator for our dynamic summer camp program. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in high-energy environments and are passionate about creating meaningful experiences for youth ages 6–11. 

The Activity Coordinator plays a key leadership role in planning and delivering engaging daily programming while supporting and supervising camp staff. This position requires strong communication, organization, and leadership skills, along with the ability to create a fun, structured, and safe camp environment. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Create, schedule, and implement creative camp activities for youth ages 6–11, including arts and crafts, sports, games, and STEM-based enrichment. 

• Lead, mentor, and evaluate camp counselors, including training and delegating responsibilities. 

• Coordinate daily camp schedules, special events, and field trips. 

• Maintain clear and professional communication with parents regarding camper experiences and program information. 

• Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants. 

• Support overall camp operations and assist with problem-solving as needed. 

This position requires working both indoors and outdoors in a fast-paced summer camp setting.

The City of Newark is seeking an Urban Forest Supervisor for the Public Works Department. The Urban Forest Supervisor leads the City’s forestry and landscape maintenance programs. This role blends strategic planning, technical expertise in tree health, and hands-on project management to ensure a safe and well-maintained urban environment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

• Participates in the preparation of the operating budget for the landscape and tree program; participates in the forecasting of additional funds needed for materials and supplies and gathers cost estimates as directed. 
• Provides skilled and technical direction on care, maintenance, disease prevention, and removal of trees; plans inspection and maintenance of all trees in appropriate cycles; assigns priorities and special projects as needed.  
• Inspects work sites before, during and after completion of work to assure that required work is completed in a satisfactory and thorough manner; inspects work sites, equipment and tools for compliance with safety standards; and inspects and approves work done by outside contractors. 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, and four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape and tree maintenance, including two (2) years of lead responsibility or other qualifying higher level public works maintenance experience.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate issued by the State of California.
• Possession of certificate as a Certified Arborist from the International Society of Arboriculture.
• Possession of a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record throughout employment. 

The ideal candidate for Plan Check Engineer with our Office of Building Safety will possess strong technical background in structural engineering and/or building life safety in a wide range of residential and commercial projects.  This candidate will be proactive, customer service-oriented, and a team player and demonstrates effective communication skills.  Analytical skills, initiative, independent judgment, along with strong time management and attention to detail, are key attributes for success in this role.

About the Position: The Planning Department is seeking TWO interns who are interested in learning about open space and planning for ecologically sensitive public recreation. Their responsibilities may include researching and compiling project information, supporting community and stakeholder engagement, assisting with environmental review and documentation, researching new programs and initiatives, conducting field surveys and data collection, and using computer-based systems such as GIS, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator for analysis of data and preparation of documents related to Midpen programs, lands and facilities. The interns will work as a team and individually on assignments, including opportunities for field work to gain experience in data collection techniques and tools and on-the-job training in project management, planning research, analysis, and written communication.  For additional information about the position, see the Job Description on our website. Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, ArcGIS software, GPS equipment, Microsoft Excel, and Apple iPads is desired, and familiarity with Midpen preserves/trails as well as local flora, fauna, and natural history are a plus. Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required before time of appointment. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions:  This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  The selected individuals will be required to work a minimum of three days on-site per week, and assignments may vary between field and office work. Field work is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week (within regular business days/hours). Regular business is conducted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm. Interns may work up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-to-9-month period. This is a non-benefited position.
