ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Seasonal Maintenance Worker position performs a variety of entry-level and unskilled labor, maintenance and repair tasks in various public works operations, such as park maintenance, landscape maintenance, creek and catch basin maintenance, street maintenance, and janitorial and facility maintenance.  Weekend availability is at times required for picnic area prep, general park clean-up, etc.

Work Schedule:

THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Key Strategic Initiatives 

Key Strategic Initiatives: During the next 24 to 36 months, Public Works has several large initiatives underway to improve organizational performance and further advance community goals. The Zero Waste Strategic Plan and accompanying Five Year rate implementation will be key to funding new programs and infrastructure needed to achieve Berkeley’s waste diversion goals. The Bike Plan, Pedestrian Plan, and Vision Zero Plans are scheduled for large scale updates and public processes to define the traffic safety and infrastructure priorities of the future. Finally, an update of the goBerkeley Parking Program is underway to re-evaluate parking demand and transit uses to continue to drive effective curb management of metered parking and reduce emissions through improved programs.

Division Overviews

Refuse & Recycling – Berkeley has a long-standing commitment to reducing and ultimately eliminating landfill waste. The City established one of the nation’s first municipal recycling programs and, in 2019, adopted one of California’s most comprehensive ordinances regulating single-use foodware and litter. Berkeley operates its own transfer station and waste-collection franchise—an uncommon model in the region. Given its commitment to waste diversion, Berkeley is one of the few municipalities in the region that has its own City-owned transfer station and waste collection franchise operations. 

Streets & Utilities – Includes street maintenance, sewer maintenance, the Clean City Program which is responsible for illegal dumping collection, litter collection, encampment support, street sweeping).

Facilities Management – Responsibilities include electrical maintenance and Radio Shop; building maintenance and janitorial services; and property management support. This Division maintains public service facilities, traffic signals and pedestrian control devices, and streetlights. 

Public Works Administration – Leading, integrating and supporting departmental services, the administrative division provides strategic planning and policy formulation, budget administration, human resources management, payroll processing, coordination of legislative issues, and management of information systems.

Engineering & Capital Infrastructure – Under the leadership and technical guidance by the Engineering Manager/City Engineer Sidewalk Program, Sanitary Sewer Program, Pavement Rehabilitation Program, Storm Water, Utilities, Land Use Permitting, and Facilities Capital Renovations. In 2016 Berkeley voters passed the $100 million T1 infrastructure bond. There are more than $40 million in capital projects currently underway. In addition, in 2024, Berkeley voters approved Measure FF, which is a parcel that tax that is estimated to generate $15 million per year for the City to make repairs to streets, sidewalks, and pedestrian paths.

Transportation Division – The Transportation Division oversees citywide transportation planning, traffic engineering, parking, bicycle and pedestrian planning, and alternative transportation programs. In partnership with neighborhood organizations, community groups, and local business associations, the Transportation Division develops short- and long-range policy recommendations and directs program implementation to support a safe, efficient transportation environment in Berkeley.

THE PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR

The Director of Public Works is responsible for leading the operations, planning, administration, financial management, and intergovernmental relations associated with all Public Works activities, including:

-Directing the operations of the Department which include streets and sanitation, engineering, traffic engineering, facilities maintenance, equipment maintenance, and solid waste management, collection and disposal; performs related work as required.

-Planning and administering all aspects of the following: streets and sanitation, including construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, storm drains, and lateral sewer lines; facilities maintenance for City buildings and grounds, and installation and repair of electrical facilities such as street lighting, police and fire alarm, and communications systems; equipment maintenance for police and fire vehicles, solid waste trucks, construction equipment, fleet vehicles and other motorized equipment.

-Overseeing operations management including solid waste collection and the long-range planning of environmentally sound solid waste collection, recycling, and disposal which meets with community standards; the planning, design, installation and maintenance of traffic signs, signals and markings; and engineering design and inspection.

-Assuming direct responsibility for dealing with complex matters involving policy, administration and operations. This position requires considerable public partnership with citizen groups, boards, commissions, other governmental agencies, and other City departments and officials.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a strong leader and an effective communicator with broad public works experience. Because this role interacts with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders - including commissions and community interest groups - exceptional interpersonal skills are essential. The successful candidate will bring strong management, financial, and political acumen to lead a large, complex department with extensive capital projects and contracts. They will have a passion for public service in an engaged and progressive community; a vision for expanded, energy-efficient capital investments; and a commitment to safe, low-stress, multimodal streets. Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college with a degree in civil engineering, architecture, planning, public administration, or a closely related field. Six years of professional experience in the field of public works, planning, or high-level project management. A minimum of four years of this experience must have involved high-level management of a variety of programs and demonstrated success in supervising a sizable professional and administrative staff involving policy information, program planning, development and implementation. An advanced degree may be substituted for the non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis, for up to two years of the required experience.

The City of Newark is seeking an Urban Forest Supervisor for the Public Works Department. The Urban Forest Supervisor leads the City’s forestry and landscape maintenance programs. This role blends strategic planning, technical expertise in tree health, and hands-on project management to ensure a safe and well-maintained urban environment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

• Participates in the preparation of the operating budget for the landscape and tree program; participates in the forecasting of additional funds needed for materials and supplies and gathers cost estimates as directed. 
• Provides skilled and technical direction on care, maintenance, disease prevention, and removal of trees; plans inspection and maintenance of all trees in appropriate cycles; assigns priorities and special projects as needed.  
• Inspects work sites before, during and after completion of work to assure that required work is completed in a satisfactory and thorough manner; inspects work sites, equipment and tools for compliance with safety standards; and inspects and approves work done by outside contractors. 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, and four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape and tree maintenance, including two (2) years of lead responsibility or other qualifying higher level public works maintenance experience.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate issued by the State of California.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Mechanic in the Public Works Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of equipment including heavy and light trucks, construction equipment, automobiles, other vehicles, and small gasoline engines. The City maintains over 550 vehicles. You will operate a variety of hand, power and shop tools in order to perform maintenance, repairs and overhauls. There are two Equipment Maintenance Shops – one focusing on smaller light duty vehicles and the other focusing on heavy duty vehicles including refuse and recycling trucks.

The Department of Public Works has over 300 employees. In this role, you will work primarily with other Mechanics, Service Technicians, a Lead Mechanic, an Equipment Parts Technician, and administrative and management staff. The Equipment Maintenance Division launched a new asset management software system last year to better manage inventory and repairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years experience at a journey level in the maintenance and repair of vehicles or heavy construction equipment. Course completion in appropriate trade school or technical coursework in electric, diesel, or gasoline powered mechanics leading to journey certification can be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

Other requirements include possession of a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Must possess a valid class "B" California driver's license with no air brakes restriction, Smog Check Inspector license, and Smog Check Repair Technician license before completing probationary period. ASE Certifications are preferred. A class "A" driver's license is desirable.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Woodland Joint Unified School District (WJUSD) Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities Department is seeking a motivated Civic Fellow to support the district’s sustainability and environmental stewardship efforts. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in sustainability practices, facilities operations, and process improvement within a public education setting.

The Civic Fellow will assist in assessing current district practices related to recycling, waste reduction, and resource conservation. This may include reviewing recycling programs, observing waste management practices at school sites, and identifying opportunities to improve sustainability efforts. Working closely with Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities staff, the Fellow will help research best practices and develop practical recommendations to improve environmental outcomes and operational efficiency.

This fellowship provides practical exposure to sustainability planning, facilities management, and public sector operations, equipping participants with valuable skills in research, data analysis, environmental practices, and process improvement while contributing to the district’s commitment to responsible resource management.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general directions from the designated WJUSD host-site employee.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a motivated and detail-oriented individual with an interest in sustainability, environmental science, public administration, and/or facilities operations. The Civic Fellow should be comfortable conducting research, making observations, and working collaboratively with staff across multiple departments.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong organizational and problem-solving skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn about sustainability practices. Interest in environmental responsibility, waste reduction, or operational efficiency is desirable. Experience with research, data collection, or spreadsheets is helpful but not required.

This position is well suited for someone who enjoys identifying practical solutions, working on real-world challenges, and contributing to efforts that improve environmental responsibility within a large organization.

THE POSITION OBJECTIVES/GOALS

The goals of the position are to:

1. Assess current sustainability practices within Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities, including recycling programs, waste disposal practices, and resource conservation efforts.

2. Review existing procedures and practices related to recycling and waste reduction, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and environmental impact.

3. Research best practices from other school districts or public agencies related to sustainability, recycling programs, and waste reduction strategies.

4. Support the development of recommendations to improve recycling participation, reduce waste, and promote sustainable practices across district sites.

5. Assist in developing simple guidance materials or communication tools to help staff and students better understand sustainability practices.

6. Develop a working understanding of school district facilities operations and the role of sustainability in supporting efficient and responsible operations.

7. Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying practical opportunities to strengthen sustainability practices and reduce environmental impact.

To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work involving the trimming, removal, installation and general maintenance of trees.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Community Services Department, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Ideal Candidate will possess an in-depth knowledge of practices and procedures identified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) as they relate to a municipal setting. The Ideal Candidate will also possess good communication, customer service and writing skills, as well as demonstrate competence working with computers and related software, e.g., maintenance management and MS Outlook. Additionally, they will have a strong work ethic, ability to climb trees, work out of an aerial truck, be available to work overtime and perform standby duty as needed. The Ideal Candidate should have knowledge in operating chain and hand saws, operating a chipper, a background in landscaping with planting trees, and experience with setting-up and tearing-down of traffic control. The Ideal Candidate also has knowledge of safety & best management practices used in operating and maintaining tree pruning equipment and trucks.

Tree Trimmer I:
This is the entry level class in the Tree Trimmer series.  Positions in this class will usually perform most of the duties required of Tree Trimmers I and II; however, as compared to the Tree Trimmer II, is not expected to function at the same skill level and will usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment on matters related to work procedures and methods.

Tree Trimmer II:
This is the journey level class in the Tree Trimmer series.  This class differs from Tree Trimmer I in that incumbent performs more complex duties.  This incumbent Tree Trimmer II may also be expected to assist in the oversight and training of less experienced personnel.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Prune trees and shrubbery to provide clearance of streets, sidewalks, signs, and lights, and as necessary to ensure continued health of the plant.  Remove fallen trees, dead limbs, and other debris resulting from storm damage and general conditions.  Participate in the large-scale application of herbicides and pesticides.  Clean and maintain trimming equipment.  Work both independently and as a crew member in removing trees and stumps.  Plant, stake, spray and inject trees.  Operate a chipper, aerial truck, mist sprayer and miscellaneous equipment which could include routers, loaders, forklifts, and dump trucks.  Use a variety of hand tools including hand saws, pole saws, chain saws, and pole loppers.  Regular and consistent attendance.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
May perform street drainage maintenance or other public works maintenance work when not assigned to tree trimming duties.  Respond to emergency situations after regular working hours.   Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Tree Trimmer I
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Six (6) months of work experience involving tree maintenance or landscaping work including some tree trimming.

License and Certificate: Required upon hire, possession of a valid California driver's license.  Must obtain a valid Class B California driver’s license, Work Zone Safety I certificate from the International Municipal Signal Association (or Department approved equivalent), First Aid and CPR certification prior to permanent appointment.

Tree Trimmer II
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Eighteen (18) months of work experience involving tree maintenance work including pruning, trimming and caring for trees.

License and Certificate: Required upon hire, possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License.  Possession of a Work Zone Safety I certificate from the International Municipal Signal Association (or Department approved equivalent), First Aid and CPR certification prior to permanent appointment.  Possession of a Certified Commercial Applicator license from the State of California and Certification as an Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture is highly desirable.

The City of Dixon is excited to announce the recruitment for a Public Works Director. The Public Works Director will play a critical leadership role during a period of elevated development activity and organizational transition. The City of Lincoln is hiring up to 6 part-time Assistant Pool Managers within the Recreation Department.  This position may require you to work various days, weekends or evenings.

Seasonal employees are limited to working no more than 999 hours in a fiscal year.

Under direction, assists in the overall operations of a swimming pool facility, and its assigned temporary employees; assists in the planning, organizing, coordination, development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of aquatic activities and programs for all ages.

The Assistant Pool Manager is the working lead class responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the pool and aquatics program. This class is distinguished from the next higher classification of Pool Manager in that the latter has overall responsibility for the pool operations, programs, and staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Pool Manager. Exercises indirect supervision over temporary and seasonal aquatics personnel; may exercise direct supervision in the Pool Manager’s absence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Include but are not limited to the following:

• Assist in monitoring and supervision of the day-to-day operations of the aquatics program, which includes direction to lifeguards/instructors; enforce and explain pool regulations and policies; administer first aid and perform emergency rescues.
• Maintain proper health specifications, in restroom and locker areas and take all safety precautions.
• Manage the daily opening and closing of the facility.
• Assist in the oversight of proper sanitation and maintenance of pool water; ensure cleanliness of restrooms, dressing rooms, and public areas; report maintenance conditions affecting facility operation and security.
• Assist in the oversight of the safe and proper operations of assigned pool; ensure pool rules and safety guidelines are followed; maintain order with disruptive patrons and exercise crowd control where warranted; and refer escalated issues to assigned supervisor or proper authorities.
• Exercise lead/indirect supervision over all assigned staff including temporary and seasonal staff, independent contract instructors, and volunteers. Exercise direct supervision in the Pool Manager’s absence.
• Participate in the recruitment and hiring of temporary, part-time, or seasonal aquatics staff as required.
• Promote and enforce water safety procedures; effect swimming rescues; render first aid and CPR as required; ensure the safety of pool users and enforce all user rules and policies of the department.
• Complete, review, and file accident and incident reports; assist with follow-up related to reports; purchase, check, and maintain first aid equipment; perform daily safety checks and inspections of the facility and all equipment.
• Assist with employee schedules; complete reports on chemical tests; assist with the training of lifeguards and other aquatics staff; verify and check aquatics staff timecards; submit timecards to Pool Manager for approval; coordinate and facilitate staff meetings; assist with special events.
• Work with maintenance staff to ensure that pool facility maintenance procedures are followed.
• Keep the pool, pool deck, and auxiliary buildings/areas clean and free of litter and debris.
• Act as the Pool Manager in her/his absence.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Position requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when reading correspondence, statistical data and using a computer. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. The incumbent may use cleaning chemicals, or pool chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot and cold and is required to swim.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS

Knowledge of: Modern principles and practices of aquatics programs; facilities, operations, and techniques used in aquatics programs; routine swimming pool maintenance, chlorinators, heaters, and other equipment used in a pool facility; current techniques in swim lesson instruction; basic pool chemistry, including chemicals used to disinfect water and maintain proper PH in a public pool; practices and principles of first aid and CPR lifesaving safety measures at a public pool; health and safety codes applicable to the operation of a public pool; principles and practices of customer service; modern office equipment, methods, and procedures; computer hardware and software; proper English, spelling, and grammar.

Ability to: Supervise and instruct individuals and groups in various aquatic and related recreational activities; plan and lead the work of volunteers, seasonal/part-time staff; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; interpret community demand for aquatic programs; successfully resolve a variety of customer service related matters; respond to emergency situations in a calm and effective manner; administer first aid and CPR; work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

The General Maintenance Worker plays a vital role in keeping our communities and centers clean, safe, and visually appealing. This position focuses on a specific set of tasks tailored to meet the needs of the Recreation & Community Services Department, differing from the broader responsibilities of a full General Maintenance Worker under the Public Works Department. The Recreation Coordinator or Recreation and Community Services Supervisor is the key point of contact for this position, providing general direction and/or supervision.

1. Field Preparation: Assist t with basic field preparation for baseball and softball, including tasks like dragging the infield play area, marking chalk lines, and other essential setup activities.
    
2. Groundskeeping: Support keeping the exterior areas of community centers clean and presentable by removing trash and maintaining general tidiness. Assist with watering and care of indoor plants within recreation centers as needed.
    
3. Facility Cleaning: Perform light janitorial duties, including cleaning restrooms, fitness centers, and lobbies.
    
4. Events & Equipment Support: Assist with event setup and teardown once events are completed. Maintain special event equipment, furniture and supplies and promptly report any damaged or broken items to a supervisor for replacement.
