Typical Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
• Under general supervision: patrol designated areas in, by foot, by bicycle, or other means to preserve law and order;
• Direct traffic;
• Enforce parking regulations, issue citations that are in violation of codes;
• Observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist and advise motorists; issue parking  citations and warnings;
• Discover and prevent the commission of crimes, and enforce laws and ordinances; 
• Maintain awareness of and remain alert for wanted suspects, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress; 
• Conduct investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned or incidents observed to determine what, if any, crime has been committed;
• Respond to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including those involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents;
• Investigate complaints and take appropriate action, which may include the use of deadly or non-deadly force;
• Use sound judgment under adverse, stressful conditions;
• Identify, collect, preserve, process, and book evidence;
• Locate and interview victims and witnesses;
• Work in partnership with the Santa Clara Police Department and the District Attorney's Office to follow through on criminal complaints;
• Apprehend and arrest offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes;
• Control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations;
• Establish and preserve good relationships with the general public;
• Answer questions from the public concerning local and state laws, procedures, and activities of the department, apply good public relation principals;
• Participate in continuous training required by POST  to enhance law enforcement skills 
• Attend meetings and trainings;
• Prepare a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed; prepare investigative reports and case information;
• Testify in courts and at hearings; prepare and present case evidence;
• Escort prisoners to county jail, juvenile hall, or Santa Clara Police Department; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

• Currently employed as a Full Time or Part Time Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or

• Currently working as a Level I Reserve Police Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or

• Retired as a Full Time Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or two years experience as a Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency and possession of a valid Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.  

LICENSES &/OR CERTIFICATES

• Possession of a valid driver's license is required; 

• Proof of a current Basic or higher certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) is required at the time of application and for the duration of employment  (Not required for Reserve Police Officers, see below);

• Must have passed Field Training Program with home agency as required by POST;

• Must have passed Probationary Period with home agency;

• The minimum Peace Officer selection standards are set forth in Government Code (GC) Sections 1029, 1031, and 1031.4.  Every California Peace Officer must be: Free from any disqualifications for employment, including felony convictions (GC 1029). Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law (GC 1031);

• and at least 21 yrs of age for specified peace officers (GC 1031.4).

• Must maintain current CPR and First Aid Certification.

Reserve Police Officers Must Also Provide: Proof of completion of Level 1 Reserve Peace Officer POST Regular Basic Course (Reserve Police Officers Only).

 

PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Must be at least 20 years of age at time of application filing and 21 years of age at time of job appointment;

• Must meet and maintain required peace officer employment standards as required by POST;

• Per the California Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS) "Public Safety Retirees on service retirement may not work more than 960 hours in a fiscal year for all CalPERS employers:;

• Retirees who were medically retired (industrial or non-industrial) should confirm with their retirement plan that accepting employment as a Per Diem Police Officer will not jeopardize their pension;

• Must possess the strength and physical ability necessary to perform the essential functions of the position;

• Must possess hearing, speech, and mental capabilities sufficient to perform all of the essential functions of the position; and

• Must be willing to be fingerprinted and pass a departmental interview, psychological, medical, and background investigation prior to appointment.

 

Vision requirements:  

• Must possess vision including color, night, depth, and peripheral vision sufficient to perform all of the essential functions of the position; and

• Must possess visual acuity of not less than 20/80 vision in each eye uncorrected, and corrected to 20/30 in each eye.

 

EXCEPTION:  Applicants with correction afforded by soft contact lenses are exempt from the minimum uncorrected vision standard of 20/80, provided their corrected vision is 20/30 in each eye.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment: 

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hostile environments; extensive public contact. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be very loud due to crowd noise, music, sirens, firearm training, etc. Incumbents are required to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends, and may be required to travel to attend meetings or court appearances.

 

Physical: 

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in a law enforcement setting; restrain or subdue individuals; walk, stand, sit, bike or run for prolonged periods of time;

occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; occasionally climb and balance; regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights; frequently lift and/or move moderate to heavy weights; occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers;

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Will be required to work special events.

• Will be required to work odd and unusual hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

• Will be required to provide safety equipment (defined as ballistic vest, duty belt, and firearm) approved by the Santa Clara Police Department.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND POLYGRAPH TEST
An intensive background investigation will be conducted on each final candidate in accordance with the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission Peace Officer Background Investigations Guidelines. Candidates will also be required to successfully pass a polygraph test administered by a licensed polygrapher, a psychological exam given by a City-selected psychologist and a medical exam by a City physician (to include a stress test EKG and general physical examination). The results of the psychological exam are valid for one year. Suitability for employment will also be based on the following POST job dimensions: problem-solving ability, learning ability, observation skills, willingness to confront problems, interest in people, interpersonal sensitivity, desire for self-improvement, dependability, integrity, credibility as a witness in a court of law, communication skills, judgment under pressure and physical ability.

• Upon successful completion of the Public Safety Officer in Training requirements, incumbents promote to Public Safety Officer I ($136,764 - $158,321).
• Upon successful completion of all phases of training, members of the Public Safety Officer I classification promote to Public Safety Officer II ($144,724 - $180,310).
• This position has an excellent benefit package, including 2.7% at 57 retirement plan.

Under immediate supervision of a Public Safety Lieutenant or Captain, either currently attends the California POST Basic Academy and is learning to perform a wide range of public safety work involving the protection of life and property including law enforcement, crime prevention, fire suppression, rescue, and basic life support activities; or has graduated from the California POST Basic Academy within the last 12 months; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 

The position of Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is the training level classification for general police and fire work for those incumbents not affiliated with an agency and currently enrolled in a police academy. Incumbents are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until successful completion of the police academy. Assignment to this classification is temporary. If incumbents do not successfully complete a police academy, they will be terminated.  Incumbents hired after the graduation from the California POST Basic Academy are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until they are promoted to Public Safety Officer I.

Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is distinguished from the higher-level Public Safety Officer I in that the latter is a sworn position where incumbents continue training for both police and fire duties. Incumbents must successfully complete the police academy prior to being promoted to the classification of Public Safety Officer I.

Position Duties

The City of San Jose is recruiting for a part-time School Crossing Guards in the Police Department during the normal school year.  Work involves providing for the safe conduct of elementary and junior high school children across heavily traveled streets and reporting problems requiring possible police action. Positions may involve substituting at different corners or a regular location assignment.  In general, these assignments are a split shift with approximately ten (10) hours per week.  School Crossing Guards are required to work outside regardless of weather conditions and must be able to provide a uniform as specified by the Police Department.   Work includes outside duties and exposure to weather.  Work may include the physical ability to sit, stand, walk quickly, step up/down from the curb, reach, push and/or pull, twist and or rotate, bend, lift and carry up to 10 pounds, use hands hold and use a stop sign the entire shift, use other hand to stop traffic and use a whistle at the same.

The City of Campbell's Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for Public Safety Dispatcher!

Under general supervision, to receive and transmit routine and emergency telephone, radio and computer messages; to keep a variety of police records; and to do related work as required.

Typical Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Answers all telephone calls promptly and courteously;
• Makes rapid and accurate determination of the nature of each call and the degree, severity, and location of any emergency;
• Refers non-emergency callers to the appropriate agency or other resource;
• Questions emergency callers to elicit complete and accurate information necessary for emergency response and enters information in the computer-aided dispatch system;
• Gather information using multiple audio and visual resources;
• Selects emergency response units in exact accordance with established user agency policies and procedures;

• Maintains current status on all field units;
• Closely monitors any situation presenting a potential danger to the life or safety of field personnel and takes immediate action to dispatch assistance as required;

• Maintains records and logs reflecting the outcome and details of emergency incidents;
• Participates in training and evaluation activities to establish and maintain a high level of proficiency;
• Accesses automated law enforcement systems, inputs data and information, and makes accurate entries into automated record files in accordance with applicable laws, statutes and Department of Justice requirements; and 
• Builds and maintains positive working relationships with coworkers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Knowledge of:

• Standard communications principles and methods for public service dispatch activities;
• Standard office procedures and methods, including filing and the operation of common office equipment;
• Correct English usage, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Hours of Work: Public Safety Dispatchers typically work 12 hours shifts, with 4 work days one week and 3 work days the following week.  Shifts available area a day and night shift, or variation, that can rotate every six months.  Dispatchers may have to work weekends, holidays and overtime. 

Special Conditions: Incumbents must have the ability to work, as assigned, on schedules that may include Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and non-traditional work hours; and a willingness to work overtime as required.

Other Requirements: Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment.  All candidates will be required to pass a City background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and may include polygraph and/or psychological testing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:

• Graduation from an accredited high school (GED may be substituted for a high school diploma); plus
• One year of successful full-time responsible experience performing work where the essential functions of the job involved public contact, computer usage or heavy telephone traffic.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR APPLICATION:
Applicants must submit proof of successful completion of the following: 

• Typing Certificate certifying a minimum of 40 wpm dated within one year of the application date; AND
• Criticall Dispatcher test with a passing score dated within one year of the application date; OR
• P.O.S.T. Entry-level Dispatcher Test with a T-score of 50 or above.  

Online typing certificates will be accepted.  If you do not have a typing certificate and would like to take the test in person, please schedule an appointment at a vocational school or a staffing agency. The P.O.S.T Entry-level Dispatcher Test and the Criticall Dispatcher will be held at the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training at Coyote Valley. Applicants are responsible for calling each location to check dates and make an appointment.  Please make arrangements to sign up for one of these tests in advance.

LATERAL APPLICANTS:
Lateral applicants that are currently employed as a Public Safety Dispatcher (non-probationary) do not need to submit proof of test scores, however a California POST Dispatcher Academy Certificate is required.
