Under the general direction of the Town Manager, plans, schedules, and directs the work of the Public Works Department, which includes providing supervision of street improvements, permits, traffic control, pavement markings, parks and public landscaping, storm drains, street sweeping, building maintenance, and general engineering functions; performs related work as required.

EXAMPLES  OF DUTIES

Prepares and presents public works related items and issues to the Town Council. Danville Poet Laureate

The Town Council created the Poet Laureate position in September 2008 to serve as a public advocate for the appreciation and advancement of the literary arts, particularly poetry, reading poetry for civic events and dedications.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Poet Laureate include the following:

(a)       create and read poetry for civic events and activities, as invited by the Town Council;

(b)       serve as a liaison between the Arts Commission and local literary organizations; and,

(c)       act as a resource on the topic of poetry.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following qualifications:  Danville resident; age 18 or older; author of published poetry or willingness to publish poetry during the term, if selected; and, affiliation with literary organizations is preferred, but not required.

Term of Office

The term of office of the Poet Laureate is two (2) years, unless otherwise determined by the Town Council. 

Compensation

The Poet Laureate does not receive compensation for their services or attendance at meetings and events. 

Residency Requirement

The Poet Laureate must be a resident of the Town of Danville.

The Department

The City’s Volunteer Fire Department is older than the City itself, founded as a volunteer corps in 1861 to replace a U.S. Army fire brigade. The largest volunteer urban Fire Department in California has undergone change to become a combination department, composed of both paid and volunteer staff. In addition, the department provides Advance Life Support (ALS) services and responds to over 3,000 calls for service annually. Staffing includes a Fire Chief, one Deputy Chief, one Fire Marshal, six Fire Captains, six Fire Engineers, an Administrative Assistant and 10 Reserve Volunteer Firefighters. Dispatch is staffed through the Public Safety Dispatch Center housed at the Police Department. Ambulance services are handled through a countywide contract. The Position

The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented problem-solver with a focus on public service. Recruits enter a training program to develop skills necessary to demonstrate abilities to respond to emergency fire and medical alarms, to protect life and property, to participate in fire suppression training and emergency medical training, to assist with station, apparatus and equipment maintenance, and to do related work as required. Volunteers are required to participate in a minimum of two 24 hour shifts or four 12 hour day shifts each month and complete assigned training.

AHA is seeking a Facilities and Maintenance Technician I to perform a range maintenance and alterations on Housing Authority buildings and facilities, HVAC, and other electrical and mechanical systems; identifying and evaluating construction-related problems; performing installation and repairs on plumbing systems; conducting property inspections, and coordinating with vendors on maintenance replacement and repair projects. THE DEPARTMENT:

The core mission of the Utilities & Environmental Services Department is to provide water, wastewater, and solid waste/recycling services  to Hayward residents and businesses and to implement the City’s Climate Action Plan. The Department plays a central role in meeting the City’s goal of becoming a more environmentally sustainable community through water and energy use efficiency, renewable energy sources, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

What you will do: 

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Directs and participates in the work of shop and field crews involved in the installation and maintenance of water mains; installation maintenance and removal of water meters.

Trains subordinates in the operation of a wide variety of light and moderately heavy automotive construction and maintenance equipment and related hand and power tools.

Performs or directs the performance of the more complex and skilled aspects of water system installation, maintenance, inspection and repair.

Exercises a relatively high degree of independent judgment in calculating materials, supplies and equipment needed for specific projects and activities to be accomplished by subordinate crews.

Assures that daily work assignments are completed; maintains records of work activity and job costs; generates daily reports and communicates with regulatory committees; enforces safety regulations; performs heavy physical labor; and may be required to act for the Utilities Field Services Supervisor in the latter's absence.

Verifies that all information on work orders and improvement drawings correspond.

Marks and telephones Underground Service Alert for location of all utilities within work area (installations, fire hydrants, main breaks, etc.).

Makes appointments with customers in response to complaints or inquires.

Participates in the short and long range planning and scheduling of specific activities to be accomplished by crews under his or her supervision and sees to the prompt and efficient completion  of the work.

Supervises valve crews, hydrant crew, marking and location of mains. 

Works with Construction Inspectors and other public agencies.

Provides field checks for all new water related installations, and evaluate leaks in water system.

Locates and coordinates with contractors and customers on all new water service installations; adjust service installations and locations when conflicts occur with other utilities.

Makes recommendations for installation changes at the work site.

Coordinates site finals with Construction Inspectors.

May be required to assist with utilities system and sewer main repairs.

Experience:  Two (2) years of experience performing journey level duties in construction or maintenance work involving water systems.  One (1) year of supervisory experience as a lead person or above is desirable.

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

License and Certificates:  Possess upon appointment and on a continual basis, a valid Class B California Driver's License with a Tanker Endorsement or a Class A Driver License may be required. Possess upon appointment, a D-3 certification from the California State Water Resources Control Board.

THE POSITION:

Under general supervision, the Shelter Volunteer Coordinator assists in the planning, organization, implementation and review of the Animal Care Volunteer Program; assists with recruiting, training, scheduling and evaluation of volunteer staff; performs community liaison functions, coordinates public relations activities; humane education programs and performs related work as required.

The candidate will have experience handling shelter animals and be able to train volunteers how to safely handle animals. The candidate will have experience in volunteer program development as well as the ability to analyze volunteer program data for retention. The ideal candidate will have some experience using the Chameleon software for animal management.

• Under  general direction, develops and implements policies and procedures for implementing various volunteer, shelter and community programs; works with Animal Services Bureau Administrator to identify needs and opportunities for utilization of unpaid staff, and to design programs to fill those needs.
• Designs and develops training and orientation programs in a variety of areas including volunteer program procedures, applicable laws and department policies, techniques for dealing effectively with the public, and the proper and humane handling of animals. 
• Assists with production and update of volunteer training manuals and volunteer job descriptions. 
• Coordinates ongoing training opportunities for volunteers to enhance their skills and keep them engaged; implements a system to provide volunteers with consistent recognition to increase volunteer retention. 
• Coordinates volunteer meetings and annual Volunteer Recognition event. 
• Coordinates and attends meetings with Volunteer Coordinators from other Animal Care Services and volunteer organizations in the Bay Area.

• Performs framing, rough and finish carpentry to erect small structures, partition interior spaces, frame and trim doors and windows, apply siding, build roofs, build stairs, build indoor and outdoor benches, tables, signs, decks, fences, gates, and related items.
• Builds interior cabinetry such as counters, cupboards, and shelves.
• Operates power nail drivers, drills, saws, drill presses, joiners, and related hand and power carpentry tools to make and install custom pieces.
• Installs, repairs, and maintains domestic water supply, drainage plumbing and related fixtures using copper, galvanized and PVC pipe techniques.
• Hangs, tapes, and textures interior wallboard, patch plaster, and apply paneling to finished interiors.
• Masks, sandblasts, brushes and chemically prepares surfaces for painting.
• Operates spray equipment and uses manual tools to paint interior and exterior surfaces, equipment and facilities.
• Repairs metal equipment, recreational fixtures and furniture; fabricates frames and racks using acetylene and arc welding and brazing equipment.
• Prepares forms, sets rebar, pours and finishes concrete to repair or construct equipment and small building slabs, foundations, retaining walls, patios, repairs brick and masonry.
• Installs and repairs shake, asphalt shingle, and tar seal roofing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Facility Repair Worker II:

• Equivalent to graduation from high school.
• Three years of responsible experience in building repair and maintenance with at least one year of experience in one of the trades.

Facility Repair Worker III:

• Equivalent to graduation from high school.
• Five years of responsible experience in building repair and maintenance equivalent to the Facility Repair Worker II classification at the City of San Rafael.
• Knowledge of building codes and necessary permits related to building maintenance tasks.
• Possess strong computer skills with programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Office.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering and two (2) years of professional civil engineering experience in design and construction work at a level equivalent to the City of Berkeley Junior Public Works Engineer classification.

Other requirements include:

• Possession of a California State Certification of Registration as a Professional Engineer
• Possession of a valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
