The Pacifica Police Department is responsible for all functions related to law enforcement and crime prevention and is made up of several divisions that carry out specialized duties to help the department perform as a cohesive whole. Basic Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Patrols an assigned area of the City by car, foot or as designated by the Police Chief, divisional commander or line supervisor.
• Maintains law and order, responds to emergencies as directed by radio and telephone.
• Investigates unusual or suspicious conditions, directs traffic, investigates traffic accidents, administers first aid, gives assistance to the injured.
• Makes arrests, serves subpoenas and warrants, guards prisoners, conducts interviews, notes and report unsafe conditions, prepares evidence and appears in court, searches for stolen property and lost persons.
• Gives information to the public regarding laws, ordinances, traffic safety, directions and available public services, issues citations to traffic violators, writes reports of daily activities and action taken.
• Investigates vice conditions, analyzes facts, clues and evidence and makes investigations to determine law violators and their whereabouts.
• Maintains effective working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, employees and the public.
• Operates the radio and other communication equipment, protects the life, property, public order and constitutional rights of all citizens.
• Adheres to the California Peace Officers Standards and Training Code of Ethics.
• Works varying hours and days of the week.
• May take on additional duties as requested, such as field training officer or instructor in one or more areas including, but not limited to firearms, defensive tactics, hostage negotiations and canine handling.

Laterals may be eligible to receive a hiring bonus of up to $20,000 disbursed in four equal phases: the first phase upon successful completion of the testing process and acceptance of a final offer of employment, and the last phase two years after completion of the probationary period as a Police Officer.

The Hayward Police Department is comprised of a staff of 197 sworn personnel and 124 professional staff.  The Department supports a Community Policing philosophy and offers excellent promotional and special assignment opportunities.  The Patrol Division currently works 3-12.5 hour days and has weekends off at least six months out of the year. Patrol Officers enjoy a minimum of 9 training days per year.  Detectives who work investigations (SVU, Homicide, Gangs, Narcotics, etc.) receive incentive pay and participate in several task forces in Alameda County.  Officers have a wide variety of specialty assignments to choose from, such as School Resource Officer, K9, Special Duty Unit (street enforcement related to gangs), and Traffic (motors).

Essential Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Patrols the assigned area on foot or in patrol vehicle, makes routine security checks, inspects places of possible disorder and keeps alert to discover suspect circumstances or persons.

• Participates in special details and assignments.
• May serve as a field training officer.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION 

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: One (1) year in a law enforcement agency within the last thirty-six (36) months and possession of a current Basic California P.O.S.T Certificate.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (possession of an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is desirable).

License
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

Necessary Special Qualifications: 

- Free of any felony convictions.

- A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government Code Para. 1031).

- 21 years of age at time of appointment.

- Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.

- Must pass a background investigation.

- Must meet all Department medical, physical and psychological standards.

The Position

The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for Public Safety Dispatchers (Lateral.)  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Dispatchers receive and transmit emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio traffic as well as process communication reports, records, and radio logs, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.  Dispatchers may also support the Police Department by performing clerical tasks, training, assisting with fingerprinting, and being accountable for financial transactions.  This position is integral in supporting the goals and objectives of the City and Police Department.  

Essential Duties

• Receives and transmits emergency telephone and radio traffic. 
• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs.
• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records.
• Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
• Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks: assisting in preparation of work schedules; training and evaluating performance of new employees; conducting training sessions; assisting in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and check transactions.
• Plans, organizes, and directs dispatching and related activities on an assigned shift. This may include preparing schedules and prioritizing work; observing work performed by Dispatcher I employees to ensure compliance with standards; approving time off; conducting employee evaluations; and providing effective recommendations on personnel matters.
• Prepares and maintains training and procedure manuals.  As required, prepares special reports, and undertakes projects for Management Staff.
• May act as Records/Dispatcher Supervisor in their absence.
• Maintains liaison with other Department Divisions, City Departments, and other law enforcement and emergency response agencies.
• Maintains various C.A.D and Record Management Files.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Certificates and Licenses

• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, Class C with a good driving record.
• Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Intermediate Dispatch Certificate; an Advanced California POST Certificate is preferred.

• Upon successful completion of the Public Safety Officer in Training requirements, incumbents promote to Public Safety Officer I ($136,764 - $158,321).
• Upon successful completion of all phases of training, members of the Public Safety Officer I classification promote to Public Safety Officer II ($144,724 - $180,310).

Under immediate supervision of a Public Safety Lieutenant or Captain, either currently attends the California POST Basic Academy and is learning to perform a wide range of public safety work involving the protection of life and property including law enforcement, crime prevention, fire suppression, rescue, and basic life support activities; or has graduated from the California POST Basic Academy within the last 12 months; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 

The position of Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is the training level classification for general police and fire work for those incumbents not affiliated with an agency and currently enrolled in a police academy. Incumbents are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until successful completion of the police academy. Assignment to this classification is temporary. If incumbents do not successfully complete a police academy, they will be terminated.  Incumbents hired after the graduation from the California POST Basic Academy are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until they are promoted to Public Safety Officer I.

Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is distinguished from the higher-level Public Safety Officer I in that the latter is a sworn position where incumbents continue training for both police and fire duties. Incumbents must successfully complete the police academy prior to being promoted to the classification of Public Safety Officer I.

This is a non-sworn, civilian training classification to be used while incumbent is attending a certified P.O.S.T. Basic Police Academy.  Incumbent in this classification receives the same employee benefits as Police Officers, with the exception of being placed in the “Miscellaneous” retirement category until successful completion of a designated police academy, and as a civilian employee, will not be covered by government code sections 4850 and 3300 through 3311.  Upon successful completion of an academy, incumbent shall be sworn as a Police Officer, placed in the safety retirement category and begin an 18-month probationary period as a Police Officer on the date of swearing in. 

Education: 

• High school graduate or its equivalent. 
• Completion of 30 semester (or equivalent quarter) units from an accredited college or university preferred. 

Physical Capabilities/Vision:

• Must be capable of performing the full range of work assigned to a Police Officer free from physical, mental or emotional restrictions, which would adversely impact job performance.

Special Assignment Pay

Members of our team are eligible for specialized assignments with compensation incentives:

Detective/School Resource Officer - Additional 2.5% of base salary

Motorcycle - Additional 2.5% of base salary 

Field Training Officer - Additional 2% of base salary

Bilingual Pay - up to $150 per month

K-9 Handler - Additional seven hours of additional pay at 1.5 rate and seven of overtime each pay period

Information Technology Super User - Additional 5% of base salary
