THE POSITION

The Woodland Police Department is staffed with 71 sworn officers, 18 professional employees, and 8 part-time temporary professional employees. Our staffing is expected to expand in size as the City grows. The Department is managed by a Chief of Police, a Deputy Chief, 4 Lieutenants, 10 Sergeants, and a Police Records Supervisor. The Department has three Bureaus; Patrol, Investigations, and Community Relations. Police Officers are assigned to all Bureaus where they work in various capacities and teams.   Within the Bureaus are many specialty units including K-9, Traffic/Motors, School Resource Officers, Gang Task Force, Detectives, and Homeless Outreach Street Team.  There are a number of collateral duties available to officers including SWAT, Crisis Negotiations Team, Field Training Officer, Honor Guard, Arrest & Control Instructors, Firearms Instructors, Gang Resistance Education, and Training (G.R.E.A.T) instructors, Social Media Team, Recruitment, and Bicycle Patrol. Woodland’s primary business is agriculture and light industrial, including distribution centers for Target, True Value, Payless, and Walgreens. Woodland has a community college, 2 senior high schools, 2 junior high schools, and 12 elementary schools in the public school district, supplemented by 5 private schools, grades K through 12. The area offers various recreation possibilities: water skiing and boating on the Sacramento River, Lake Berryessa, and Lake Folsom; skiing in the Sierras, hunting, and fishing; five golf courses; and many other youth and adult-oriented recreations.

THE POSITION

The Foster City Police Department is seeking a dedicated and highly skilled individual to join our team as an Police Dispatcher. This position receives police and emergency calls and dispatches police units following prescribed procedures; answers non-emergency calls for public safety and other City departments; performs a variety of general administrative support duties including record keeping, typing, and filing; and performs related work as required.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:  

Education: Possess a high school diploma or a G.E.D. 

Experience: One (1) year of work experience involving public contact which involved using good judgment, tact, and effective written and/or verbal communication skills.

It is desirable, but not a requirement, that the applicant for this position have the ability to type no less than 40 net words per minute. The typing certificate must but be certified and dated within the last 12 months of application.

License or Certificate: 

• Verification of successful completion of the POST Entry-Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery Examination with a minimum passing “T-score” of 50 or higher within the last 12 months. 
• Possess a POST Basic Dispatcher Certificate prior to the completion of the probationary period. This certificate must be obtained and maintained throughout employment within this classification.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. 

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview. An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Police department will make the hiring decision.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the Reserve Police Officer is a sworn position assigned to field operations to patrol for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations within the philosophy of community oriented policing.  Incumbents are normally expected to solve most work problems independently and to refer to supervisory personnel only those matters which involve policy decisions, technical questions and unusual problems at the entry level and make recommendations at the advanced level.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Enforces laws and regulations and apprehends law breakers
• Conducts crime investigations
• Patrols for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations
• Responds to radio messages or telephone instructions and investigates reported disorders or crimes
• Notes and reports complaints, accidents, offenses and damages to property
• Reports abandoned or damaged vehicles
• Directs traffic
• Makes arrests, issues citations and warnings
• Prepares reports on arrests and property impounded
• Inspects crime scenes and questions witnesses
• Analyzes clues and information related to criminal activities
• Reviews modus operandi of known criminals
• Reports on the progress of investigations and prepares assigned cases for court
• Serves warrants
• Appears in court to testify regarding arrests and other law enforcement activities
• Writes complex and detailed reports
• Operates patrol vehicles
• Administers first aid or CPR when appropriate
• Develops cooperative working relationships and mutual aid agreements with other local public safety representatives
• Develops and maintains partnership building with the residential and business community as well as the other working departments within the Town of Colma
• Adheres to department rules, regulations, orders and procedures
• Exhibits and encourages behavior that is consistent with the Town’s risk management program and decreases risk of accident or injury to self, employees, residents, visitors and their property
• Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge of:

• Modern office technology

• POST Intermediate Certificate: 2.5% of base salary

• Completion of 120 college semester units or BA/BS degree: 2.5% of base salary

-Bilingual Pay: 2.5% of base salary

Total estimated potential incentive pay: 17.5%

Base Salary range with all incentives: $99,173.90 - $132,902.51

Additional Incentive Pay:

Physical Fitness Program: $70-$120 per month + Wellness Incentive of $50 per month
