About the Department

The Central Garage is part of the Public Works Maintenance & Operations Division. Our three-bay facility maintains more than 260 units—including patrol vehicles, Class 5 and above apparatus, newly integrated electric vehicles, heavy equipment, generators, and small engines to ensure City operations can deliver essential services 24/7.

About the Role 

As a Mechanic I/II, you will:

• Planned and carried out preventive maintenance schedules for all city vehicles and equipment.

• Diagnose and repair gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel engines; hydraulic, electrical, fuel, ignition, exhaust, and brake systems.

• Operate computerized diagnostic instruments plus a full range of hand, air, and electric tools.

• Maintain concise and clear repair records in our repair management software.

• Perform welding, metal fabrication, tire work, and minor body repairs.

• Provide emergency field assistance and respond to critical fleet issues on a 24-hour standby.

• (Mechanic II only) Lead and review the work of assigned staff and manage garage inventory, purchasing, and repair/maintenance planning

Minimum Qualifications & Certifications

• Education - Associate degree (or equivalent coursework) in automotive technology, mechanics, maintenance management, or related field

• Experience

• • Mechanic I - 2 years progressively responsible automotive diagnosis & repair

• • Mechanic II - 4 years progressively responsible automotive diagnosis & repair

• License - Valid CA Class B driver’s license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire

• Certifications

• • Mechanic I - ASE certifications are preferred; Master Mechanic is highly desirable

• • Mechanic II - similar to Mechanic I, plus demonstrated journey-level competency.

The Position:
This is complex lead level work involved in a central purchasing department related to the procurement of goods and services, including preparation of formal bid documents, facilitation of the activities of the bid process, selection of vendors, volume buying, inventory, assessing availability and quality of goods and services, and routine to complex procurements for the entire District according to prescribed methods. Public contact is extensive, primarily involving District and college staff at all levels, outside vendors, contractors, outside business representatives, other educational institutions, and external auditors for the purpose of exchanging product, procedural, timeline, and workflow information. A high degree of independent judgment and creativity are required to interpret policies and procedures, and to provide input into the resolution of frequent minor and occasional major problems that occur. Consequences of errors in judgment can be costly in terms of District resources, employee time and in public relations; however, supervisory controls limit the risk of serious errors. The Senior Buyer leads and trains student assistants as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. 2. Develops and confirms product specifications and quality expectations and examines total cost of ownership
3. Develops and prepares bid specifications and RFP, RFQ, and RFB documents, analyzes bid results, and prepares reports related to the formal bidding process
4. Attends professional development related meetings, workshops and other events to stay current on public procurement code and District policies and procedures. Occasional mandatory participation in select professional development conferences requiring travel outside the Bay Area. Willingness to pursue professional certifications in the procurement field
5. Attends and conducts meetings and consults with College and District staff, vendors, and others to provide information about the bidding process, development of bid procedures, clarification of product specifications, finalization of contractual agreements, and collaboration on the resolution of problems
6. Administers and oversees administration of the procurement card program, including issuance and cancellation of cards and communications with cardholders and the bank
7. Administers and oversees administration of other District-wide procurement tools, such as reverse auctions, gas cards, or contract management software
8. Participates in and/or provides direction to staff on purchasing transactions requiring specialized technical knowledge or understating of specific commodities, materials, supplies, manufacturers, and District services

14. Analyzes data and systems available to retrieve desired information

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a closely related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience

The Accountant performs professional work involved in first line supervision of accounting functions, complex account development, maintenance, modification, and reporting. Occupational Therapist II is the experienced journey level class in this series. ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director will oversee department-wide administrative operations and strategic initiatives including organizational planning, program performance, budget development, financial accounting, procurement, contracting, human resources, recruitment, and other administrative functions. This role will supervise three staff members in the Operations Division and closely collaborate with other staff to achieve the Commission’s strategic goals.

The Deputy Director must be willing to forego involvement in all local political activity while a member of the Commission staff and publicly file an annual Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Essential duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

• Establish and implement departmental goals, policies, and strategic plans as directed by the Executive Director.
• Develop and maintain a broad understanding of the Commission’s laws, policies, programs, procedures, and operations.

Minimum Qualifications

San Mateo County Health's Public Health Policy & Planning (PHPP) Division has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Veterinarian to work in Animal Control and Licensing as a member of the team.
 
The current vacancy is extra help part time 20-hours per week in the Public Health, Policy and Planning Division. The position is stationed in San Mateo, CA, but will travel/drive throughout the County to perform duties of the position.
 
Scheduling is flexible. Daily reporting hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department. Evening and weekend work may be required based on the needs of the organization. This position is a hybrid of remote work as well as field-based at clinics.
 
The Veterinary Wellness Program provides veterinary services to the pets of the unhoused, those in transitional housing, and very low-income San Mateo County residents who are receiving services from San Mateo County. This position works with San Mateo County Health and cross collaborates with other programs within the County. Technical expertise, as well as knowledge of veterinary public health practices, are preferred.
 
San Mateo County is unique in that most of our homeless shelters allow residents to bring their pets with them, not just an emotional support or service animal. One of the barriers for homeless people to get into a shelter with their pets is that their pet must be current on their vaccinations. Within 10 days of a new resident moving into a shelter with a pet, the County veterinarian will meet with the owner and their pet to provide a general exam, the necessary vaccinations and flea control. This position will visit various sites throughout the County on a regular basis, providing vaccines, flea control, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and general exams. In addition, the Veterinarian will travel to various homeless encampments to provide these services and to offer and encourage spaying and neutering of the pets.
 
When pets need additional care, this position will coordinate with local veterinary clinics we contract with for services. These contracts allow us to provide spay and neuter services, dental services, and many other procedures that the pet owner would not otherwise be able to afford. These vital veterinary services keep pets from being relinquished to animal shelters and provides peace of mind for the pet owner. In addition, our veterinary program partners with our Street Medicine Program to provide health care services to the pet owners, which advances San Mateo County’s One Health Concept.
 
This Veterinarian position will be providing technical/subject matter expertise on issues relating to the spread of zoonotic, epizootic, and exotic diseases, as well as consulting on cases of rabies in domestic and wild animals. The position will also act as a liaison between the veterinary community, Veterinary Public Health, California Department of Public Health, and residents of the County.
 
Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide lead direction to staff responsible for following prescribed treatment and maintaining treatment records for animals treated.
• Ensure that the highest level of service and care are provided and that changes in animals’ conditions are recorded and properly addressed.
• Examine and evaluate animals, and perform veterinary medical treatments, including vaccinations and preventative treatment as appropriate. 
• Coordinate with local veterinarians and clinic/shelter professionals to arrange spay and neuter surgeries and medical procedures.
• Arrange for care at a contracted veterinary hospital for severely injured, sick or diseased animals and provides full orders for care.
• Establishes and maintains medical records and drug use logs to standards of veterinary practices.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures, and companion animal health issues.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with the staff, community, local veterinarians, State Veterinarian. 
• Assist in the monitoring of inventory and ordering of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
• Serve as technical/subject matter expert to answer questions from the County Health Officer, medical community and the general public regarding issues related to/involving animals—including but not limited to researching, recommending, implementing and/or maintaining measures to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases, epizootic diseases, exotic diseases and disease outbreaks. 
• Serve as a consultant in suspect cases of rabies in domestic and wild animals as well as complex issues deriving from animal bites.
• Review pertinent legislation, regulations, and policies to provide recommendations, especially with regards to vaccination of domestic animals, rabies vaccine exemptions, quarantine/euthanasia of animals exposed to rabies.
• Disseminate relevant information to the local veterinary community as well as to residents of the county.

The Human Resources Administrator (Classification & Compensation) reports to the Director, Human Resources and is responsible for administering the District’s classification and compensation categorization system including performing highly confidential and professional level analytical work and advanced data analysis. This position makes recommendations based on studies and market data for professional-level administrative positions within the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans), Peninsula Joint Powers Board (Caltrain), and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA) agencies. 

Essential Functions & Duties:

Examples of Essential Functions:

• Plan, develop, and administer the District’s classification and compensation program. 

• Gather, consolidate, and analyze complex qualitative, quantitative, confidential and sensitive data, datasets, and information from multiple sources. 

• Serve as the subject matter expert in classification and compensation, market salary data, and salary studies, providing information and recommendations to management. 

• Provides leadership in change management related to classification and compensation including communication with District staff on updated Human Resources policies and procedures. 

• Assists with People & Culture Group programs including benefits, recruitment, civil rights, and employee relations by providing data and information relating to compensation and classification. 

• Responsible for developing, updating, and communicating policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to the area of administration. 

 

Examples of Duties:

• Provide classification and compensation support to the HR Director and Caltrain HR Business Partner.

• Conduct review of classification descriptions and determine an appropriate level of compensation based on market data comparators and internal alignment.

• Independently and proactively identify trends and insights for recommendations. 

• Monitor state and federal policy updates, new technology, or updated methodology related to classification and compensation and communicate changes to relevant departments and staff. 

• Prepares presentations, reports, and data visualizations to support findings and present information in a clear and concise manner. 

• Analyze and interpret large datasets and information. 

• Leads meetings to present salary and budget recommendations, policy updates, and individual results with staff, management, and consultants. 

• Performs periodic audits of the classification and compensation evaluation system, ensuring data quality and control, consistent and fair application, and 

• Maintains reports, manuals, datasets and files. 

• Manages the work of outside consultants, scheduling meetings with necessary administrative staff, and supporting the information gathering and decision-making process. 

• Assess and review compensation and classification policies and procedures for improvements.

• Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect oneself, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:

• Associate Degree in Business Administration, Economics, Statistics, Human Resources, Labor Relations, or directly related field. 

• Five (5) years full-time, progressively responsible experience in classification, data and/or information analysis in a professional business setting.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ability to use initiative and independent judgment, work with interruptions and changing priorities, organize work and follow-up assignments with minimal supervision.  

• Public sector experience preferred. 

• Experience providing analytical support to a human resources function preferred.

We are now actively recruiting for one (1) part-time Behavioral Health Advocate I position within our Wellness Center, Tri-City's community hub for activities that promote recovery, resiliency and wellness for people confronting mental health challenges. 

The Behavioral Health Advocate I position provides advocacy, guidance, feedback, outreach and support to help families to access and work more effectively with the systems involved.   These positions report to a Program Supervisor.

This position will perform the following essential duties, including, but not limited to:

• Provides peer to peer support services in the office and/or in the field including, but not limited to outreach, support, encouragement, guidance, advocacy, and referrals to external resources and services for clients and their families; builds rapport with clients and their families through sharing stories of lived experience and recovery.

• Encourages and supports clients to fully engage in services; provides outreach and assists clients in addressing and overcoming barriers to treatment.

• Prepares and facilitates a variety of wellness groups and group activities; monitors groups to ensure compliance with group rules and encourages client participation.

• Assists clients and families to understand behavioral health problems and steps to recovery.

• Serves as a role model to build and sustain connections and relationships with clients and the
  community.

• Accompanies clients to meetings and appointments to support their self-advocacy and facilitate better communication with service providers.

The Board of Supervisors and District Four

San Mateo County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, each elected to represent one of five supervisorial districts. The Board:

• Establishes legislative policies to support the effective administration of County government and the delivery of services to residents.
• Exercises legislative and quasi-judicial authority to protect and promote public health, safety, and welfare.
• Serves as the governing body for the Housing Authority and 47 Special Districts.
• Members are elected to four-year terms and may serve up to three consecutive elected terms.

 

District 4 includes Redwood City, East Palo Alto, the Belle Haven neighborhood and eastern portions of Menlo Park (east of El Camino Real), and the unincorporated community of North Fair Oaks.

 

Role Overview: Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff provides high-level strategic and administrative support to the Supervisor, ensuring alignment with County priorities and addressing the unique needs of District 4. This position plays a central role in policy development, community engagement, and office management. Key responsibilities include:

• Leading and coordinating policy initiatives and legislative priorities for the district.
• Advising the Supervisor on complex policy and community issues.
• Serving as a liaison and spokesperson for the Supervisor with constituents, community groups, media, and other government entities.
• Responding to constituent concerns, including conducting site visits and direct outreach as needed.
• Conducting research and policy analysis on local and regional issues.
• Managing the office budget, processing invoices, and ensuring compliance with County financial procedures.
• Assisting with personnel matters such as recruitment, training, and staff evaluations.
• Providing direction, training, and support to staff in collaboration with the Supervisor.
• Managing the Supervisor’s calendar, including scheduling meetings and public engagements.
• Preparing policy memos, reports, and presentation materials.
• Overseeing office operations and special projects.
• Performing other duties as assigned to support the Supervisor and the needs of the district.

 

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $133,765 to $167,149.
