THE DEPARTMENT

The Library and Recreation Department is comprised of two divisions, Library and Recreation & Childcare, that are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of San Rafael residents. The Department’s mission is to enrich the community through discovery, learning, and play, and strives to maximize the delivery of strategically aligned programs and services to provide the highest value for the community.

The Recreation Division operates with a $4.93 million budget and 18 FTE. The Recreation Division includes 3 community centers, one cultural center, an aquatics center, two community gardens, 3 ballfields, a multi-use turf field, 3 community parks, 11 neighborhood parks, 6 pocket parks, and 5 special use parks. The Recreation Division is responsible for developing innovative, diverse, and community-centered programs and services at the City’s park and recreation facilities.

The Albert J. Boro Community Center and Pickleweed Community Park are important facilities managed by the Recreation Division. The Albert J. Boro Community Center and Pickleweed Park are located in the heart of the Canal neighborhood, a vibrant and diverse area that has traditionally been marked by socio-economic disparities compared to the rest of San Rafael. The facility is heavily utilized and is an important resource for a predominantly Spanish-speaking community. Programming of the facility is supported by the City Council-appointed Pickleweed Advisory Committee.

The Community Center is co-located with the Pickleweed Library and is a successful example of joint and collaborative use between the City’s Library and Recreation Divisions. The Pickleweed Library is scheduled for major renovation starting in Fall 2025, with select library programs relocating into the Community Center. Pickleweed Park is currently wrapping up another major renovation, which included converting two full-size soccer fields to all-weather turf, and adding new amenities, including a basketball court, fitness equipment, play area, and gazebo. The park is expected to be fully re-opened in late July.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Recreation Supervisor will oversee the Albert J. Boro Community Center and Pickleweed Park, serving as a key leader in enhancing recreational services for the surrounding community.

The ideal candidate for the Recreation Supervisor position will be a dynamic and service-oriented leader with a strong background in recreation programs and services, staff supervision, and community engagement. They will have demonstrated experience in planning, organizing, and overseeing recreation programs and services that align with the diverse needs of the community. A successful candidate will be skilled in fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment, managing and mentoring staff, and implementing innovative programs that enhance recreation services.

This individual will be an effective communicator and problem solver, adept at engaging with community stakeholders, fairly and transparently balancing the needs of diverse user groups and ensuring that programs and services meet the needs of a multilingual community. Experience with City Boards, Commissions, and Committees; diverse program offerings (multilingual and older adult programming, rentals, gymnasiums, etc.); and multiuse sports fields are a plus.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience in budget management, cost recovery strategies, and policy implementation to support recreation programs and services. • Participates in program budget development, and monitoring.

Qualifications:

After School Program Technician I's work in the formal Suisun City classification of Recreation Specialist II. Starting hourly rate will depend on qualifications. This position works on average 19-29 hours per week.

The Position: Under general supervision, this position involves organizing, leading, and coordinating a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational and educational activities for an Afterschool Program. This role is classified as Temporary Part-Time to support both seasonal and year-round recreational programs.

On April 29, 2025, Suisun City Council approved a new contract between the Suisun City RPM Department and the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD). This agreement expands after school programming to include to grades TK-5 at Dan O. Root Elementary and Crescent Elementary Schools, making the Suisun City RPM Department the sole provider of after school services at both locations. This is a significant milestone for the RPM department and a reflection of the quality and dedication of our team.  We are excited to continue providing high-quality programs for our community's youth.

• Compile and maintain distribution lists for mailings and electronic communications

Facility and Sports Field Attendants work in the formal Suisun City classification of Recreation Specialist I. Starting hourly rate will depend on qualifications. This position works on average 19 hours per week.

The Department: The Recreation, Parks and Marina Department is responsible for the operations and programs of the Suisun City Marina, the Senior Center and the Joseph A. Nelson Center, including preschool, after-school programs at various sites, recreation classes and sports leagues, community events and special event rentals.

The Position: Facility and Sports Field Attendants work behind the scenes making all Recreation and Community Services excel!  This job entails setting up for events and rentals, cleaning the facility and performing light maintenance duties.  We’re looking for highly motivated people with a customer service orientation who genuinely enjoy helping others and who are flexible problem-solvers.

Share your passion of teaching! Course Instructors have the opportunity plan curriculum in your area of expertise and share that knowledge with a class size of 5-15 students. We need instructors for all types of programs and classes at the Community Center, with a focus on adult/senior education. We are looking for instructors with skill levels able to teach their craft to others with multiple years of experience. Class interests include everything from fitness, balance, card games, arts and crafts, music, and special interests.  At Mill Valley Arts and Recreation, we embrace a culture of diversity and invite instructors to deliver the highest quality inclusive recreation programs to our community.

DEFINITION: Plan, organize and execute personal curriculum program classes. Program hours based on class date, time, location with your direct supervisor.  Preparation hours can be discussed.

• Develops and implements plans for daily/regularly-scheduled park irrigation maintenance; installs, repairs and maintains irrigation equipment, as necessary.
• Establishes water budgets for each park facility; audits and calculates park/facility water usage, analyzes and interprets data and provides monthly reports.
• Investigates and develops new methods and/or improvements to existing methods that result in effective management and conservation strategies of limited water resources.
• Evaluates and makes recommendations, provides technical expertise to District staff, and provides reports to supervisor regarding water conservation objectives.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Mill Valley Library is recruiting an Archivist for the Lucretia Little History Room. This person will direct the History Room’s operations and services and supervise docents and staff to help acquire, preserve, and showcase local history. The archivist will oversee the Division’s budget and write grants to support additional projects. The Lucretia Little History Room is dedicated to illuminating the unique history of Mill Valley and making it accessible to people of all ages and interests.

The collection includes about 10,000 historical photos, local artifacts, maps, house files, over 250 oral histories, and research materials. History Room staff assists the public with research and collaborates with the Mill Valley Historical Society and other local organizations. Recent projects have included the launch of a local history podcast, virtual exhibitions, Building History in 3D, and Mapping Mill Valley History. • Plans, organizes, directs and controls all parts of projects from concept through design, permitting, bidding, and construction to the closeout for a portfolio of complex capital improvement projects.
• Prepares and monitors project budgets, including support for obtaining funding.

• Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in construction management, project management, civil, structural or mechanical engineering, facilities planning, design management, architecture, business, economics, planning or a related field

AND

• Five years of progressively responsible experience in project management related to the area of assignment.

The required education is interchangeable with project management experience related to the area of assignment on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.

Possession of a master's degree in a field noted above, professional registration or licensure, or Project Management Institute (PMI) / Construction Management Institute (CMI). Either may be substituted for one year of required experience 

• Valid CA driver’s license required.
