ABOUT THE POSITION

The Executive Assistant/Deputy District Clerk independently performs a full range of highly responsible, confidential, and complex administrative duties to a small team of Executives. Additionally, this classification supports the District Clerk in preparing and delivering the District Board agenda packets, meeting notices, resolutions, and related materials;  coordinating District election processes; provides administrative support maintaining the District’s records management system; attends Board and Committee meetings and facilitates streaming technology; and functions as the District Clerk in their absence. You will be part of a high-performing  and dynamic team.  They are a small, hardworking team, consistent work product, great attitude, and fantastic customer service for both external and internal customers who work directly to supports Midpen’s mission to protect and restore the natural environment and contributes to providing nature’s benefits to everyone.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Executive Assistant/Deputy District Clerk will be required to attend evening Board/Committee meetings. Meetings may be held in Los Altos or offsite.  This position is part of the General Manager’s office at Midpen’s office in Los Altos, California. Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: 

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by two (2) years of college-level coursework in business or secretarial science and
• Three (3) years of responsible secretarial experience involving assisting executive management or a high-level officials with administrative duties.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

About the Position:  Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) is seeking an Information Systems & Technology (IST) Intern in the Information Systems & Technology Department. The IST Intern will be exposed to government information technology and will receive on-going support and training while working collaboratively and establishing and maintaining open communication with all District Staff. They will gain applicable experience to prepare them for an IT Technician job. This intern will also participate in new cybersecurity projects, software integration and provide hands-on helpdesk support in a hybrid work environment.

Duties and responsibilities of the IST intern may include: responding to daily IT help-desk requests; engaging in proactive problem solving and repairing of IT related equipment and systems; assisting in modifying and maintaining existing applications such as but not limited to Windows 10/11 and Office365 applications; supporting, performing research, and executing IT projects as assigned; and providing user support for software applications and technical expertise to all staff regarding the District’s computer network system. The expected start date for this position is in early December 2025.

Basic Requirements:   Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Current enrollment in an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program, or trade school in a relevant field. Successful candidates will have the following education and/or experience: general understanding of network infrastructure and services such as switches, DHCP, file sharing, and Active Directory/LDAP;  understanding of Microsoft products such as Windows Client/Server and Office365; and minimum two years of college or pursuing a two or four-year degree from an accredited college, university, or technical school with major course work in computer science, information technology, MIS, telecommunications, or related field. Working Conditions:  The selected individual may sit for prolonged periods of time; involves in person and virtual interaction with District staff; use of a computer; ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds of equipment; and may drive a District vehicle. This position will report on-site to the IST Department at Midpen offices in Los Altos, California and will also drive to the various Midpen field offices; Foothills Field Office (Cupertino), Skyline Field Office (La Honda), South Area Office (Campbell), and Coastal Area Outpost (La Honda). This is a temporary position working 24-32 hours per week (within regular business days/hours). Regular business is conducted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Assistant Civil Engineer! In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on capital improvement projects in the Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department or the Public Works Department. You will perform professional office and field civil engineering work related to the planning, design, construction and maintenance of these projects. This position requires a California PE license.

The Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department maintains more than 50 parks and operates the largest public marina on the Bay. Engineers in this department work on projects at parks, community centers, recreation centers, the waterfront, pools, camps, and related facilities and infrastructure.

The Public Works Department supports the City’s extensive network of public infrastructure. Engineers in this department work on projects across the city that advance City initiatives such as the Climate Action Plan, Pedestrian Plan, and Vision Zero. Program areas within Public Works include Facilities, Sanitary Sewers, Sidewalks, Streets, and Storm Drains.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering and two (2) years of professional civil engineering experience in design and construction work at a level equivalent to the City of Berkeley Junior Public Works Engineer classification.

Other requirements include:

• Possession of a California State Certification of Registration as a Professional Engineer

A Dance Instructor (Program Specialist) will plan, prepare and instruct recreation activities. Activities may include art, cooking, dance, pre-school program and other program areas. Programs are designed for children ages 4-17 (primarily 5-12) years of age.

Dance programs may include ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballroom, folkloric, salsa, and rhythmic international styles.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (These duties are a general description and are not all inclusive.)

• Develop and submit lesson plans including class content and material needs.
• Lead organized activities to develop and strengthen youth academic, recreational, and social skills.
• Plan lessons and activities so they are appropriate to students with various abilities.
• Ability to requisition supplies and/or purchasing program supplies within City guidelines
• Evaluate and provide constructive feedback on the activities, camps and events
• Conduct creative and safe class meetings; instruct students on the safe and proper use of supplies, tools, and equipment
• Participate in cleaning and maintaining the facilities and equipment
• Interact professionally and appropriately with parents, students and staff
• Communicate with supervisor regarding classroom needs

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED

General supervision is provided by a program coordinator or Recreation Supervisor. The Program Specialist may supervise a part-time aide and/or "counselor in training" in a classroom environment in daily activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age
• Different program areas will have different skills and knowledge requirements for the position; check with Recreation Supervisor. (For example: 6 ECE unites required for pre-school instructor)
• One school year teaching experience
• At least one year's experience working with children in an academic setting
• Must be willing and able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required

REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT

• Must be able to handle sensitive and/or stressful situations or information with tact, discretion and significant awareness of confidentiality
• Must effectively communicate with adults and children from a variety of cultural backgrounds
• Willingness to comply with suspected child abuse reporting (11166.5 PC)
• Employees are required to be certified in Adult/Child CPR & First Aid from American Red Cross, American Heart Association or supervisor approved equivalent. Employees must be certified within 30 days of hire date or prior to the first day of work, whichever occurs earlier.
• Fingerprinting and TB test are required
• Must submit verification of legal right to work in the United States as a condition of employment

The Recreation Division provides classes and programs for all ages and abilities. The Position:
Recreation Leader I
The Recreation Leader I is an entry level classification in the Recreation Leader series designed for high school students whose skill level in several broad types of recreational activities is sufficient to assume responsibility for an entire recreation program or area. Under immediate supervision, an incumbent is responsible for the promotion, organization, and leadership of a variety of recreation activities.   The Recreation Leader I is distinguished from the Recreation Leader II in that the latter is designed for college level students.

The Recreation Leader II will supervise children, youth, teens, and other program participants in many facilities, including but not limited to the Reed & Grant Sports Park, Youth Soccer Park, Youth Activity Center & Teen Center, and Community Recreation Center. In this role, the successful incumbents will help conduct health and safety checks, open/closing facilities, serve as Disaster Service Worker while adhering to COVID-19 protocols.  Recreation Leader IIThe Recreation Leader II is an intermediate-level classification in the Recreation Leader series.  This classification is designed for high school graduates whose skill level in several broad types of recreational activities and is sufficient to assume responsibility for an entire recreation program or area. Under general supervision, an incumbent is responsible for the promotion, organization, and leadership of a variety of recreation activities. This class is distinguished from the Recreation Leader III in that the latter holds responsibility for planning and developing recreation activities. 
 Recreation Leader IIIThe Recreation Leader III is an advanced-level classification in the Recreation Leader series designed for college students who are skilled in several broad types of recreational activities.  Under general supervision,  an incumbent in this classification is responsible for the planning, organization, development, and leadership of a specific recreation activity or group of several closely related activities in specialty areas such as athletics/sports, aquatics, drama, arts and crafts, music, dance, therapeutics, nature, and camping . The Recreation Leader III may oversee the work of lower-level personnel and may lead and/or conduct clinics, programs, seminars, and similar gatherings in the specialty area.   The Recreation Leader III is distinguished from the Recreation Specialist in that the latter  exercises a higher degree of independence and holds greater overall program responsibility.

• Consults with recreation staff to coordinate the specialty area with the overall recreation program; incorporates the recreation specialty into a Department-approved total philosophy of recreation; interprets philosophy to participants and the public
• Advises and assists other recreation leadership staff members involved with the specialty activity to meet the specific needs and interests of the people involved
• Demonstrates and explains techniques, procedures, materials, equipment, and supplies used in the activity field
• Keeps records and accounts of attendance, inventory, financial charges and receipts, personnel, special events, accidents, and other matters requiring systematic recording
• Reports to supervisors on groups or individuals, plans, and problems; recommends action and carries out departmental policies in leading the special activity
• Issues, receives, and oversees the use of equipment by individuals and groups in the activity; recommends the acquisition or disposal of such equipment and materials
• Ensures all appropriate safety precautions are observed in the activity
• Performs other related duties as assigned. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Recreation Leader I

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Requirements

• Education equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and
• No experience required; and
• Must be at least 16 years of age at time of application

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
• In accordance with State of California law, a valid California Work Permit is required at time of appointment for candidates under the age of 18 who have not graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate of proficiency

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• As a condition of employment, incumbents will be required to be fingerprinted in accordance with State of California law
• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment

 

Recreation Leader II

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
 Minimum Requirements: 

• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED; and
• No experience required; and
• Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
 Possession of the following is desirable:

• A valid California Class C driver's license
• A valid American Red Cross First Aid certificate

Recreation Leader III

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
 Minimum Requirements:

• Completion of forty-five (45) semester units of coursework, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university, preferably with an emphasis in Recreation, Physical Education or a related field; or
• Six hundred (600) hours of recreation leadership experience equivalent to the level of Recreation Leader II with the City of Santa Clara; and
• Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
 Possession of the following is desirable:

• A valid California Class C driver's license
• A valid American Red Cross First Aid certificate 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• As a condition of employment, incumbents will be required to be fingerprinted in accordance with State of California law
• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment

Considerable ability to:• Demonstrate proficiency in a specialty recreation activity• Promote, organize, lead and conduct a specialty recreation activity for participants of all skill levels• Instruct and coach participants in a specialty activity• Physically lead and coordinate assigned recreation activities• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including children• Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals• Exercise tact and maintain poise in resolving disputes and differences arising with the public and employees• Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
Physical ability to:• Assist participants in and out of wheelchairs• Restrain and/or lift program participants

The Recreation Specialist is a unique position that is primarily responsible for specific projects or long term projects requiring relevant knowledge and expertise.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (This is a general description of duties and is not all-inclusive)

• Coordinate all aspects of a project
• Set up and maintain project files or computer databases as required
• Provide regular project updates including written reports to project leader in a timely manner
• May work independently or in a team environment depending on project requirements
• Provide expertise and support to project leader
• Enforce City policies and procedures
• May be required variable hours including evenings and weekends
• Perform other duties as assigned

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED

General supervision is provided by the Recreation Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Relevant technical skill, education, experience or expertise
• Ability to establish and maintain productive relations and positive attitude toward others
• Excellent written and verbal skills
• Excellent organizational and supervisory skills, be resourceful, flexible and able to work both alone or as a team member
• Must be reliable and be able to provide transportation

REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT

• Must be able to handle sensitive and/or stressful situations or information with tact, discretion and significant awareness of confidentiality
• Must effectively communicate with adults and children from a variety of cultural backgrounds
• Willingness to comply with suspected child abuse reporting (11166.5 PC)
• Employees are required to be certified in Adult/Child CPR & First Aid from American Red Cross, American Heart Association or supervisor approved equivalent. Employees must be certified within 30 days of hire date or prior to the first day of work, whichever occurs earlier.
• Fingerprinting and TB test are required
• Must submit verification of legal right to work in the United States as a condition of employment

SELECTION PROCESS

Qualified applications will be evaluated on the basis of related experience and quality of presentation.

The most highly qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview. Applicant evaluations may include a written and physical test. Satisfactory candidates will be placed on an eligibility list. Placements are anticipated immediately after the list is established. Some placements may be assigned to emphasize public education as the City's needs require.

Some positions may require a health evaluation.
