The General Maintenance Worker plays a vital role in keeping our communities and centers clean, safe, and visually appealing. This position focuses on a specific set of tasks tailored to meet the needs of the Recreation & Community Services Department, differing from the broader responsibilities of a full General Maintenance Worker under the Public Works Department. The Recreation Coordinator or Recreation and Community Services Supervisor is the key point of contact for this position, providing general direction and/or supervision.

1. Field Preparation: Assist t with basic field preparation for baseball and softball, including tasks like dragging the infield play area, marking chalk lines, and other essential setup activities.
    
2. Groundskeeping: Support keeping the exterior areas of community centers clean and presentable by removing trash and maintaining general tidiness. Assist with watering and care of indoor plants within recreation centers as needed.
    
3. Facility Cleaning: Perform light janitorial duties, including cleaning restrooms, fitness centers, and lobbies.
    
4. Events & Equipment Support: Assist with event setup and teardown once events are completed. Maintain special event equipment, furniture and supplies and promptly report any damaged or broken items to a supervisor for replacement.

The City of Orinda Parks and Recreation Department seeks qualified individuals with the passion and desire to work with youth campers as a summer Camp Counselor (Recreation Leader) in the Parks and Recreation Department.   This position takes direction from the Camp Director and Camp Coordinator (Recreation Program Specialist) and reports to the City's full-time Recreation Coordinator.

Essential Duties:

Camp Counselors (Recreation Leaders) are assigned to the summer day camp programs working with children ages 3 1/2 to 12 years old.  They assist, plan, organize and lead the physical, recreational and social activities of assigned recreation programs under direction of the Camp Director (Recreation Program Specialist) and the Recreation Coordinator.  

• Bring energy and enthusiasm to the camp environment every day.
• Safely and appropriately supervise campers at all times.
• Plan and lead arts, crafts, games and sports according to the theme of the week.
• Serve as a mentor and role model to campers by modeling positive behavior at all times.
• Use positive discipline with campers and communicate effectively with parents and guardians.
• Effectively collaborate with fellow camp staffers and Parks and Recreation Department staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

Licenses/Certifications: CPR, First Aid, and AED training and/or certification are required prior to the first day of camp.  There will be a CPR, First Aid and AED training on the May 30, 2026 Training Day.

Supervision:

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, the Camp Director assists the Recreation Coordinator in the administration of summer camp staffing, programming, training and camper/family relations.  The Camp Director is responsible for overseeing the camp coordinators and camp counselors, and the Director is the on-site camp liaison for families. 

This position is a 40 hour per week Monday through Friday seasonal position during summer.  In addition to staff recruitment and selection and summer program planning hours prior to camp start dates, there is also an opportunity to continue employment on a part-time basis with the Parks and Recreation Department during the school year to assist in the planning and implementation of Orinda Youth Sports (OYS), adult sports, and the Orinda Teen Advisory Council (OTAC).

Essential Duties:

• Collaborate with Recreation Coordinator to develop, coordinate and facilitate summer camp programs and activities.
• Oversee camp staff, and promote a safe, supportive and engaging environment for all staff.
• Assist Recreation Coordinator in staff hiring and training and with staff scheduling and evaluation.
• Lead weekly debriefs involving city-run summer camps with Camp Coordinators.
• Direct Counselor-in-Training camp during last one week of summer.
• Utilize strong communication and decision-making skills to handle crisis management, discipline, or troubleshooting issues related to campers, families or staff.
• Maintain fiscal records and work within budget to order and maintain camp supplies and resources.
• Act as liaison between families, campers, staff, and Parks and Recreation Department.
• Ensure the health and safety of all campers and staff are prioritized in all summer camp programs.
• Support Recreation Coordinator with ePACT management and administration.

Minimum Qualifications:

Camp Orinda is a full-day (9:00 am to 4:00 pm) traditional camp for 6 to 11 year olds.

Camp Orinda Jr. is a half-day camp (9:15 am to 12:45 pm) for 3 1/2 to 5-year olds.

Essential Duties:

• Execute the camp curriculum in accordance with the Camp Director and Recreation Coordinator.
• Lead arts, crafts and games according to the theme of the week.
• Participate in weekly camp debriefs with Camp Director.
• Offer leadership, guidance and direction to Camp Counselors.
• Supervise Counselors-in-Training (CIT), pair CIT's with experienced Camp Counselors, and delegate CIT weekly duties during CIT camp week.
• Serve as a mentor and role model to campers and communicate effectively with guardians and families.
• Safely and appropriately supervise all campers.  Camp Orinda Coordinator will supervise campers on weekly field trips around the East Bay.
• Monitor supplies and create weekly supply list.
• Ensure the health and safety of all campers are prioritized in all summer camp programs.

Recreation Leaders will assist in the implementation and planning of a wide variety of arts and crafts, sports, games, special events, and excursions. Candidates will work either for the Ash Street Summer program at Ash Street Park or Camp Newark at the Silliman Center.  Both positions require candidates to work in an outdoor environment.   

Work Schedule: Since this is a summer-only position, it is expected that applicants can work Monday-Friday with limited vacation time (less than one week) during the below program dates: 

Ash Street Summer Program: Monday-Friday: June 22-July 24, 10:30am – 3:30pm, no camp on July 3 

Camp Newark: Monday-Friday: June 8– July 31, 7:30 am – 4:15 pm, morning and midday shifts available.

PROGRAM LEADER (Youth Services/Kids’ Night Out/Kids Day Out Programs)

Salary Range: $17.37 to $23.15/hour (DOE)

Part-time temporary, non-benefitted position; 10 hours per month in Kids’ Night Out Program and Bi-monthly Friday night availability (6-11 pm) required. Additional shifts are available on San Ramon Unified School District days off school, during recreation pop ups, and special events. (not-to-exceed 950 hours per fiscal year)

GENERAL DUTIES

Under the general supervision of the Youth Program Coordinator, Youth Services staff is responsible for supervision and safety within the bi-monthly Kids’ Night Out and Kids Day Out Program, including implementing a variety of crafts, games and activities for youth ages 5 to 11.  As a Youth Services staff member, you will:

• Gain experience leading arts, crafts, games, and activities;
• Serve as a mentor and role model to youth;
• Learn to work as part of a team and lead activities;
• Acquire skills to safely and appropriately supervise youth in a staff-to-youth ratio environment.
• Assist with recreation pop ups and special events
• Other duties as assigned

Specific to Youth Services:

• Plan and execute duties related to special interest classes, school-year and seasonal programs, and special events.
• Serve as a role model and advocate for youth.

The Recreation Specialist is a unique position that is primarily responsible for specific projects or long term projects requiring relevant knowledge and expertise.

The Department

The Human Services Department (HSD) delivers and supports services by forging long-term community partnerships, engaging with and building the capacity of the community to do its own problem-solving, and leveraging financial and volunteer resources.

The Position

The Program Coordinator will provide supervision and oversight of the Fremont Family Resource Center (FRC) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). In addition, this position will be responsible for overall FRC communications, marketing, and event planning. This position will be required to work a varied work schedule which will include weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays.

Examples of Job Duties

• VITA program design and implementation. Duties include, but not limited to:
  • Ensure VITA site compliance as outlined by the IRS.
  • Manage and update calendaring system.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of VITA site(s) to include set-up (moving furniture, setting up laptops and printers, preparing food, clean-up, and washing dishes). Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds with help from other staff.
  • Meet with VITA coaches to develop, coordinate, and deliver training curriculum.
  • Maintain program documentation and write reports.
  • Recruit volunteers and attend county-wide meetings as appropriate.
• Serve as marketing, communication, and service integration lead for the Fremont Family Resource Center. Must be comfortable with public speaking, creating and delivering presentations.
• Plan, coordinate, and implement the Fremont Family Resource Center annual Day Away Conference and other FRC events.
