This is the journey level classification in the Mechanic series. The Mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level mechanical ability and aptitude. Under general supervision of the Construction Inspection Manager, this Assistant Engineering Technician position performs routine technical office and field engineering functions in connection with public works activities.  The current vacancy exists in the Construction Inspection Section of the Engineering Division. 

Examples of duties include:

• Performs field inspections of public works projects, developments, and activities requiring permits and inspection
• Inspects grading, underground utilities, City water mains, sewers, storm drains, curbs, gutters, paving, irrigation systems, street lights, and other infrastructure construction for conformance with regulatory standards, plans, and specifications
• Maintains daily written records of progress made in construction and materials used
• Assists in the preparation of progress payments and writing of change orders
• Performs other contract administration duties on routine public works projects

This is a seasonal, part-time position for the Parks & Grounds division.

Under the general supervision of a Public Works Streets Supervisor or Parks & Grounds Supervisor, and direction of a Maintenance II lead, incumbents in this classification assist with the cleanup and maintenance of City parks, streets, and satellite facilities including buildings, equipment, bus stops, parking lots, trails, flora and landscapes; and perform related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Emptying garbage cans.
• Picking up litter and other illegal dumping.
• Raking and spreading material including, but not limited to, asphalt, mulch, gravel, and soil.
• Collecting shopping carts.

Primary responsibilities:

• Perform skilled work in the pruning, care, and maintenance of trees and grounds maintenance, including chemical application duties
• Perform heavy manual labor in the care and maintenance of trees and in performing grounds maintenance
• Install, repair, and program irrigation systems and controllers
• Perform graffiti removal
• Perform routine and emergency work from an aerial lift bucket
• Assist in overseeing the work of contractors

The Traffic Signal Technician performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks involving maintenance, repair, modification, inspection, and testing of traffic signals, controllers, and street lighting systems.

Examples of duties include:

• Electrical maintenance and repairs on traffic signal, street lighting, and battery back-up systems and equipment
• Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs traffic signal network communication devices, video detection systems, and closed circuit television cameras
• Performs electrical system wiring and installations
• Services generating units, switches, circuit breakers and other electrical fixtures
• Modifies detector loops and changes and repairs traffic signal heads
• Locates underground utilities

Under general supervision, performs professional accounting work involving the City’s various grants, budget process, and other accounting work as required.

DISTINGUISING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a professional level accounting position in the Administrative Services Department.  Under general supervision, incumbents in this class perform the full range of accounting assignments in various areas of governmental, budgeting and accounting for grants.

This recruitment is for an Electrician based at the City’s Water Reclamation Plant, with work focused on the plant’s industrial systems (please note: prior experience in solely residential electrical work is not qualifying.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, the Electrician performs a wide variety of skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical infrastructure systems and equipment in support of the divisions of the Public Works Department. 

Examples of duties include:

• Performs skilled electrical and electronic installation, repair, service and maintenance work on a variety of electrical installations, systems, pumps, meters, and other equipment in City facilities, which include working on and around high voltage, 480-voltage, and multi-phase motors
• Inspects and repairs motor control circuits and variable frequency drive systems

Primary Responsibilities

• Identifies and performs a variety of maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, installations, and modifications on wastewater treatment plant mechanical equipment and facilities, including but not limited to:
  • Mechanical grinders, pumps, valves, engines, blowers, motorized valves actuators, lab equipment, air compressors, etc.
  • Industrial grade machinery, boilers, digester equipment, bulk chemical storage and delivery systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and devices.
  • Fabricates and or modifies equipment mounts, brackets, supports, utilizing welding, drilling, milling, tapping, etc. 

• Coordinates activities with operations personnel and contractors to ensure efficient and streamlined operations
• Completes and maintains maintenance logs on the City's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
• Responds to night and weekend emergency calls as needed
