The Essentials 

• Three years increasingly responsible building inspection experience supplemented by journey level construction trade experience. 
• Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade supplemented by college level courses in inspection methods, architecture, structural, or civil engineering.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate California driver’s license. 
• Possession of an International Code Council (ICC) certification as a combination inspector, building inspector, or designated trade specialist, e.g., electrical inspector.

• Possession of an AA degree in a related field.

What You'll Do
 

• Perform field inspections on various structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and building systems at various stages of building construction, alteration, or repair to ensure compliance with applicable codes. 
• Check building plans for compliance with applicable codes.
• Confer with and resolve code and inspection disputes between staff and builders, developers, contractors, architects, engineers, and the public. 
• Respond to questions and concerns of assigned staff and/or the public; assist in coordinating inspection activities. 
• Collaborate on code violation cases with the Code Enforcement Division of the City Attorney’s Office.
• Coordinate inspection activities with inspection staff in other City Divisions/ Departments, such as Planning, Fire, Environmental Safety, and Public Works, and in collaboration with other county and state agencies. 
• Provide training to new Building Inspection staff and on City policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. 
• Prepare appropriate paperwork, violation notices, records, and reports. 
• Support the public counter and Permit Center in the Building Division as needed. 
• Develop and prepare forms and online content related to inspection services for the City Website, in collaboration with other Department staff.

The City of Menlo Park is seeking engineering professionals, with exceptional technical and project management skills, for Senior Civil Engineer positions in the Public Works Department (Department) Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Division. The Senior Engineer will lead capital improvement projects under the supervision of the City Engineer or Public Works Director. The CIP team delivers projects for City owned facilities including streets, buildings, storm and domestic water, and parks. ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Custodial Services Supervisor, the Maintenance Custodian serves as the worker in the duties of care and cleaning of assigned buildings and related facilities.  The incumbent will be required to travel between several City buildings during their scheduled shift. Custodial services are provided seven days a week with shifts starting at 5pm and ending at 1:30am. Please note that schedules for this role could vary Monday-Sunday and will be determined prior to appointment.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Sweep, vacuum, shampoo, and mop
• Dust fixtures and equipment up to twelve feet from floor.
• Wash windows and doors up to twelve feet from floor.
• Clean desk and countertops if cleared of items.
• Empty and clean waste receptacles, place in appropriate outside bins. Move recycle bins in and out of assigned buildings as assigned.
• Clean and maintain restrooms in assigned buildings and facilities.
• Replace light bulbs up to twelve feet from floor.
• Lock and unlock doors; turn light and machines on and off; set alarms.
• Pick up papers and other debris and place in appropriate container.
• Operate light duty equipment and machinery.
• Maintain effective communication utilizing email and phone during each assigned shift.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Position Summary

This position demands a wide range of technical skills. Under the direction of the Communications Electronics Supervisor, this position provides technical support for the communications, access control, video and electronics control system in place throughout the District. The Communications Electronics Technician installs, maintains, test and repairs electronics communications system located at various District facilities from San Francisco to Santa Rosa. These include, but is not limited to, P25 trunked radio system, microwave equipment, video cameras and management system, access control system, programmable logic controllers, fiber optics and network communications equipment. The position is also involved in the installation and maintenance of communication and fiber optic cabling systems. 

Essential Responsibilities

• Installs and maintains the following: P25 trunked radio system, access control system, video management system, programmable logic controllers and associated controls, microwave equipment, public address systems, telephone lines and fiber optic cables
• Installs, tests, and maintains electronic and two-way radio equipment in Buses, Ferries, District vehicles and facilities, and radio sites
• Setups and services access control system, including card readers, electromechanical locks, gate controllers and associated software
• Installs and maintains video surveillance system, including cameras, servers and management software
• Installs and maintains different computer aided equipment such as radio dispatch consoles, access control monitoring, video management system, & distributed control system for PLC
• Tests, troubleshoots and repairs fiber optic using OTDR and splice equipment
• Installs, configures and maintains servers, database and network equipment such as routers and switches
• Performs regular, preventive maintenance and documents system and equipment repairs, modifications and changes
• Assists in the design, fabrication and modification of electronics communications equipment
• Updates and corrects manufacturers' documentation to increase maintenance and repair efficiency
• Knows and follows the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable job
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: 

• Associate’s degree in Electronics, Communications Technology or completion of electronics, communications technology certification program 
• Minimum of four years of experience as Communications Electronic Technician working with P25 radio system, access control, video surveillance, PLCs and similar technologies 
• FCC General Radio Operator License (GROL) license preferred

Required License: 

Must possess and maintain a current and satisfactory driving record. No reckless driving and DUI within the last 7 years. No more than 2 moving violations within the last 3 years. Operates District vehicles on a regular basis.

Physical Requirements:

Must be available for emergency repair call backs. Must be able to work outside in inclement weather. Able to lift up to 50 lbs. Able to climb towers, bridge main cables, radio antenna towers and structural steel. Must be able to bend and crawl in small areas to install security equipment requiring bending and reaching. Put arms, hands, and fingers into narrow openings. Exposure to exhaust fumes, noise, and sharp edges. May encounter reptiles, spiders and venomous species at remote radio sites.

This position may have a potential for or actual exposure to lead. Pursuant to OSHA regulations, District employees are not exposed to lead at concentrations greater than 10 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) of air averaged over an 8-hour period.

Hours of Operation:

Monday - Friday, subject to 24-hour call back and monthly rotational on-calls. Must go to all District locations, including Bridge Towers, Bus Depot, Ferry Piers, remote mountain tops, etc.

Job Description

Under general supervision, the 8562 Counselor, Juvenile Hall, is responsible for the care, custody, safety and welfare of juveniles detained at Juvenile Hall.

Essential duties include, but are not limited to: 

1. Observes behavior of detainees in an assigned living unit; directs detainees in the upkeep of personal hygiene, during mealtimes, and while cleaning the unit; maintains appropriate close supervision over detainees to prevent negative incidents; provides appropriate discipline; consults with supervisors regarding disciplinary problems; conducts regular state mandated security checks of rooms; monitors visiting sessions to ensure the safety and security of detainees and counselors.

2. Inspects windows, locks doors when not in use, and keeps count of all detainees assigned to the unit; administers emergency first aid pending the arrival of medical staff; responds to emergency conditions which may require physically subduing and restraining hostile detainees to ensure the safety and security of the unit and the facilities.

3. Completes incident reports, behavior reports, individual case reports, and other departmental forms and reports; maintains the unit log book to ensure adherence to legal requirements. Maintains and updates electronic databases and case management systems.

4. Conducts ongoing individual and group counseling sessions with detainees by communicating rules, policies, expectations, and consequences; listens and responds to questions, concerns, complaints, and requests; provides assistance in working out problems to assist detainees.

5. Directs leisure time activities; teaches and encourages good sportsmanship.

6. Transports residents to and from various locations; directs and controls residents’ movement to ensure the safety and security of the residents.

7. Facilitates the admittance and release process of residents.

8. Confers with departmental personnel and representatives of outside agencies.

Qualifications

Education:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California driver license.
Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.

Substitution:
Experience as a counselor in a juvenile detention facility or experience involving the organization, detention, or suspension of youth groups in a recreational or correctional program may substitute for up to two (2) years of the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. One (1) year equals thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units.

DESCRIPTION:

The City of Santa Clara is seeking to fill multiple Principal Engineer positions to perform high-level civil engineering tasks to manage and support capital improvement projects. Projects can range across water, sewer, storm systems, public-right-of-way infrastructure, transportation infrastructure planning and implementation, parks and recreation facilities, and other city-owned infrastructure. Under direct supervision of the Department Director or Assistant Director, the Principal Engineer will work independently as a hands-on contributor to the engineering team’s work and will be in charge of engineering, construction, maintenance, and related activities. Principal Engineers may also have responsibility for the quality and quantity of the work of an engineering unit, as well as other supervisory duties, as distinguished from the lower level of Engineering classifications.  

 

Water and Sewer Utilities Department

The Water and Sewer Utilities Department plans, designs, constructs, maintains, and operates the City’s water distribution system, sewer collection system, and recycled water system. These three utilities operate independently and charge rates to recover the costs of providing these services to Santa Clara residents and businesses, including capital investment in City infrastructure and funding needed for adequate reserves.

In 2023, the Water Utility produced and distributed approximately six billion gallons of water to approximately 26,000 service connections, delivered through approximately 335 miles of water main. Of the total potable water supply, 62% is obtained from City wells, 18% and 20% treated surface water is provided by wholesalers Valley Water and San Francisco Public Utilities Commission respective.  Recycled water delivered through the South Bay Water Recycling system makes up 20% of the total water supply in the City. 

The Sewer Utility operates and maintains 270 miles of a sanitary sewage collection system that collects and conveys wastewater to the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF) for treatment and disposal. Santa Clara is a 20% owner in the RWF with the City of San Jose owning 80% of the facility.  The Sewer Utility maintains 7 sewer pump stations, assists the Department of Public Works in the operation and maintenance of 22 storm pump stations, and performs other critical services. The Principal Engineer will be responsible for staff supervision, budget preparation and monitoring, project oversight, consultant and contractor management and administration, project database oversight, community outreach, project programming and reporting, presentations at the City committees, commissions, and Council, staff mentoring and training and assuring all projects are being implemented and constructed in accordance with plans, specifications, and standards. The City of Santa Clara's Department of Public Works seeks a result-oriented and innovative principal engineer to serve out the Department's mission to provide the highest quality public works services to the residents of Santa Clara, the development community, and our customers in a responsible and efficient manner. The ideal candidate will have extensive engineering experience, excellent project management and organizational skills, and a strong oral and written communication background. In November 2024, voters approved Measure I, a $400M general obligation bond dedicated to addressing the City’s most critical infrastructure needs. The funds will help revitalize aging streets, fire stations, storm drain systems, and recreation facilities - investing in the very foundations of Santa Clara’s growth and resilience. With this major boost, the successful candidate will help deliver a comprehensive Expenditure Plan that includes notable projects in areas such as:

This position is responsible for managing and leading the Department’s role to deliver the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects listed within Measure I. The Principal Engineer will lead the Public Works Measure I Bond Project Delivery Team (consisting of small team of engineers and inspection staff within Public Works), and work collaboratively other City Departments, outside agencies, and consultants and contractors to design, bid/award, and construct vital public infrastructure improvements. 

The Principal Engineer will report to the Assistant Director/City Engineer and will be responsible for all aspects of CIP delivery including staff supervision, budget preparation and monitoring, project oversight, consultant and contractor management and administration, project database oversight, community outreach, project programming and reporting, presentations at the City committees, commissions, and Council, staff mentoring and training and assuring all projects are being implemented and constructed in accordance with plans, specifications and standards.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

If applying for the position in the Water and Sewer Utilities Department

Education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or closely related field, and Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in engineering office and field work, two years of which shall have included supervision of professional and paraprofessional staff.

License/Certifications: 

• Registration as a Civil Engineer by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required.
• A Water Distribution Operator's Certification (Grade D-3) must be obtained within two years of appointment. 
• Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program (PACP) certification must be obtained from National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASCO) within one year of appointment.
• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of application and for the duration of employment.

Desirable Qualifications: 

• A Water Distribution Operator's Certification of Grade D-4 or higher is highly desirable.
• A Collection System Operations and Maintenance Certification (Grade 2 or higher) is highly desirable.

If applying for the position in the Department of Public Works

Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a college or university that is accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology; and

Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in civil engineering office and field work, three years of which were obtained after registration and two of which have been as an engineer in a supervisory capacity. Or Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience as a Senior Engineer with the City of Santa Clara.

License/Certifications: 

• Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers is required.
• Possession of an appropriate, valid Class C California driver's license is required at time of application and for the duration of employment.

Desirable Qualifications: 

• Possession of a license as a Professional Land Surveyor in California is desirable.

• Other certifications such as Qualified SWPPP Practitioner (QSP)/Qualified SWPPP Developer (QSD) are desirable.
