THE POSITION:

The City of Hayward is excited to announce its recruitment for the position of Jail Supervisor. Under the direction of the Jail Administrator, incumbents perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties including providing technical and functional supervision over jail personnel. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility. 

To plan, assign and review the work of assigned jail personnel; to perform duties related to the booking, searching and monitoring of prisoners; and to assist with other non sworn police activities as necessary. This is an advanced journey level class. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties including providing technical and functional supervision over jail personnel. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.

You are:

The ideal candidate will be committed to providing excellent service and possess the ability to multi-task several duties while supervising staff and ensuring health and safety standards in a secure Type I jail facility. The candidate should have experience training and evaluating others, completing administrative reports, and understanding the principles of report writing. Successful completion of the “Correction Officer Supervisor Course” issued by the State of California Standards and Training for Correction Program or Peace Officer Standards and Training Supervisory Course is highly desired.
 

Essential Duties:

What you will do: 
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Plan, assign and review the work of assigned jail personnel.
• Evaluates performance of assigned jail personnel; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement disciplinary procedures; and counsels employees.
• Approves days off and vacation requests from jail personnel and coordinates replacements for vacancies; schedules emergency and short-term assignments for the jail.
• Assists in the development and implementation of new policies, procedures, programs and goals/objectives for the jail facility.
• Assists in identifying training needs and the design of training programs; supervises and/or provides training to employees assigned to the jail adhering to the laws pertaining to a Type I jail facility.
• Train and develop assigned personnel; maintain awareness of new procedures related to prisoner incarceration.
• Book prisoners into the jail; prepare paperwork on prisoners; fingerprint and photograph prisoners.
• Maintain light security of the jail; separate prisoners as necessary.
• Verify warrants and criminal history of prisoners on law enforcement computer systems.
• Transport prisoners to court or other jail facilities.
• Respond to the public inquiries on the phone and in person and provide information as appropriate.
• Deliver prescribed medication to prisoners.
• Inventory and order jail supplies and food.
• May be assigned to act in the absence of the Jail Administrator.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing duties as a jailer in a department similar to the Hayward Police Department.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license at time of appointment.

Must possess a Basic Corrections Officer Academy Certificate from a certified Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) academy.

Must possess or obtain, during the probationary, certificates for the "Correction Officer Supervisor Course" issued by the State of California Standards and Training for Correction Program or the Peace Officer Standards and Training Supervisory Course.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS 

Essential duties require the mental and/or physical ability to: work in a standard office and jail facility environment; drive to various locations to transport prisoners; perform repetitive hand movements and fine coordination to book prisoners and prepare documents and data using a computer keyboard and mouse/trackball, use standard office equipment; sit for prolonged periods of time; stand, walk, reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, squat and stoop in the performance of booking prisoners; converse by telephone and in person, and be clearly understood; interact with the public and all different levels of City staff in a professional manner; and safely lift, carry and maneuver property, boxes, or files weighing up to 35 pounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following):    

• Assist in designing, writing, and editing content for a variety of communications platforms including websites, social media, e-newsletters, flyers, presentations, and press materials.
• Help document City programs and events through photography, videography, and brief interviews.
• Support the development and scheduling of social media content across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Nextdoor.
• Help maintain and update the City’s website and digital newsletters.
• Contribute to internal content calendars and project trackers.
• Participate in community outreach efforts, including tabling at events, supporting public meetings, and gathering community feedback. 
• Track analytics and metrics from newsletters, social media platforms, and web traffic; monitor media coverage and social media engagement; compile analytics reports to inform communication strategies.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, curious about public service, a strong communicator, and excited to learn in a hands-on environment.  They are a self-starter who can write clearly and adapt to a range of topics and formats.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Basic principles and practices of public communications, social media management, and/or media relations.
• Writing and editing for clarity, style, and grammar.
• Social media platforms, email marketing tools, and content management systems (e.g., WordPress, Mailchimp).
• Basic graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and video editing platforms (preferred).
• Cultural competency and sensitivity in engaging diverse communities.

THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael Fire Department is seeking customer service and public safety focused individuals to join the wildfire mitigation team. Under supervision, inspectors will perform a variety of wildfire prevention duties with a focus on one-on-one education via property wildfire risk evaluations.  The Inspector’s efforts will support resident compliance with City and State Fire codes.

The customer-service oriented positions will support the City’s and Marin Wildfire Fire Prevention Authorities (MWPA)’s goals. The ideal candidate will be able to connect and inspire individual action among our diverse community by explaining complex concepts in easy-to-understand ways.  Inspectors will utilize tablets and other technology to document findings and interactions in the field.

Our highly qualified candidate will be able to work effectively in small teams or independently and clearly communicate wildfire safety-related information to residents from various backgrounds.  We are looking for people who have sound judgment and can communicate effectively with others.  They will need to be able to follow both verbal and written instructions, engage effectively with the public and work harmoniously with our team. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following):    

• Perform defensible space inspections and wildfire risk evaluations in accordance with San Rafael Municipal Code 4.12.
• Investigates public and referred public agency complaints.
• Provide guidance to residents on suggested and required home hardening and defensible space strategies. 
• Provide residents with appropriate support resources and programs.
• Increase awareness, knowledge and actions implemented by individuals and communities to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires.
• Collects, enters, maintains, and disseminates data pertaining to fire prevention; reconciles reports, files and records.
• Composes letters and reports based on field notes.
• Collect and input data and images into electronic devices.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Communicate clearly and respectfully to residents and stakeholders.
• Learn and apply City and State Fire Codes and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
• Provide clear and concise written reports free of grammar and spelling errors.
• Utilize personal computers, tablets, and related software including the Microsoft Office Suite, mapping, and database tools.
• Independently conduct fire (defensible space) inspections.
• Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques.
• Be self-motivated, work independently to complete assigned duties and responsibilities in a timely manner.
• Interpret and explain fire prevention services, policies and procedures.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with stake holders to ensure that assigned fire prevention coordination efforts are successful.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS:

POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE

The City of Sebastopol is looking for a respectful, compassionate, empathetic Police Officer Trainee. The selected candidate must be currently enrolled or enrolled at a future date as a self-sponsored recruit in a certified Peace Officer Standards & Training Council (P.O.S.T.) Police Academy. The Police Officer Trainee is a non-sworn, training-level classification requiring no prior law enforcement experience. The incumbent performs a variety of entry-level police support duties in a learning capacity. The selected candidate will assist and observe Police Officers and civilian police personnel.

The successful candidate will attend the Police Academy to obtain a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate of Completion, and perform related work which may require public contact but not the enforcement of laws. Police Officer Trainees attend a POST certified Police Academy, which follows a standardized curriculum in order to provide them with basic training in various aspects of policing, many of which are prescribed by law and/or statute.

The Police Academy training is designed to provide the candidate the necessary skillsets to prepare them for consideration for promotion to a probationary Police Officer position within the City and begin the Sebastopol Police Department’s Field Training Officer program. Attendance and successful completion of a Police Academy is a legal requirement to be hired as a Police Officer within the State of California and is a requirement for a City of Sebastopol Police Officer Trainee to be considered for promotion to probationary Police Officer with the City of Sebastopol.

The selected self-sponsored academy candidates will receive a conditional offer upon a qualified application and full hourly pay while attending the police academy.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

Office Specialist I – This is the entry-level class in the Office Specialist series.  Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn office and City procedures.  As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines.  The Office Specialist I class includes part-time and temporary positions with incumbents available to provide relief support to a variety of City departments.  This class is alternately staffed by the Office Specialist II class.  Full-time incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher class.

Office Specialist II – This is the journey-level class in the Office Specialist series.  Requires the competency to independently perform a variety of office support duties.  All positions are characterized by the presence of fairly clear guidelines from which to make decisions and the availability of supervision in non-routine circumstances.  Specific duties, including the amount of typing, word processing, and use of on-line of personal computers will vary with the organizational unit to which you are assigned.  This class is distinguished from Office Specialist III, which is the working lead-level of the series, because that class performs more complex and/or specialized office clerical support functions.  Full-time incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher class.

The City of Newark is seeking an experienced skateboarding instructor who can connect with participants of all ages, especially youth and teens. The Recreation Instructor will be responsible for the planning and implementation of skateboarding classes to be held at Mel Nunes Skatepark in Newark. Responsibilities include teaching fundamental techniques, promoting safety, and creating an encouraging environment where participants can build confidence and have fun while learning to skate.

As a Building Plans Examiner, you will play a vital role in reviewing architectural plans and construction documents to ensure compliance with local and state codes—and contribute to safe, sustainable, and successful development throughout the County of Marin. There is one (1) Full Time, Regular Hire position in the Building & Safety Division.

This position provides non-engineering review of construction and alteration plans for residential, commercial and industrial structures; critically evaluates technical data to detect deviations from legal requirements; supports building permit applicants and design professionals either in person at the counter or via phone or email by answering building code related questions; works with building technicians by answering building code questions and helps move applicants through the permit process; investigates complaints of Building Code or Municipal Code violations and can guide applicants through the permit process and requirements; performs related duties and special assignments that may include sensitive site investigations and report generation related to accessibility compliance or code enforcement, preparation of requested compliance forms, handouts and procedural manuals.

Hybrid schedule: 
The Community Development Agency has embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely. However, the successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for meetings, work assignments, and/or disaster service work upon short notice, as needed and deemed appropriate. During the initial probationary period, the successful candidate may be required to work primarily onsite before establishing a hybrid work schedule.

Minimum Qualifications:
Equivalent to completion of two years of college or technical school training with major course work related to the plan checking, the construction trades or a field related to the work and two years of experience in either reviewing plans for compliance with codes and ordinances or in inspecting a variety of structures for such compliance and conformance to plans and specifications. Additional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Certificates and Licenses:
Consistent with California State law, certification by the International Code Council (ICC) or equivalent in plans examination, accessibility, or green building must be obtained within two years. Failure to obtain certification within two years may result in release from employment. Certification must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
 
Additional Requirements: Must complete a minimum of 45 hours of qualified continuing education in every three-year period with at least 8 hours regarding disability access requirements.

The City of Newark is seeking dedicated professionals to be Public Safety Dispatchers and be members of a team providing excellent service to our community. The idea of contributing to the outcomes of emergency situations should be a challenge that applicants are willing to embrace.  Newark Police Department patrol shifts are based upon a team policing model.  Dispatchers are an integral piece of that team and work the same schedule as officers with three 12.5 hour shifts per week, with one extra 10 hour shift each month working in either the communications center or attending training.  If you are interested in future development and growth opportunities within the Newark Police Department, we encourage you to participate in the Public Safety Dispatcher recruitment process.  

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

• Two (2) years of clerical, administrative, or dispatching experience.
• Experience in emergency dispatching, law enforcement or emergency-related services is desirable.

License and Certificate:

• Possession of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatching Certificate is required within the probationary period and throughout employment.
• This classification requires the ability to travel independently within and outside of City limits.
