ABOUT THE POSITION

The Town of Atherton invites you to apply for the position of Associate Engineer in the Public Works Department. The position, general supervision, performs various professional field and office engineering work related to the management, planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the Town’s public works infrastructure, associated with the Capital Improvement Program (CIP); provides project management oversight, coordination and administration; conducts development plan reviews and inspections; confers with developers, contractors, and representatives of other agencies regarding facility and infrastructure development and maintenance; administers professional services and construction contracts; provides professional staff assistance to the Director of Public Works, other departments, and the public in areas of expertise; performs a variety of studies and prepares and presents staff reports; and assist in the development of the Department budget and monitors revenue and expense budgets on an ongoing basis.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

• Plans, manages, designs, and inspects all phases of civil engineering public works construction projects, including defining the scope of the project; coordinating with permitting and public utility agencies; applying engineering principles and practices to specific problems; coordinating construction schedules with other projects and agencies; preparing and reviewing cost estimates; and inspecting construction of projects to ensure compliance with construction documents; performs related planning and design work.
• Review of proposed private development projects; including issues related to public works, hydrology, grading, scheduling, traffic control, and erosion; prepares public works conditions of approval for proposed development.
• Reviews construction plans prepared by consulting engineers and private contractors; checks plans for conformance with regulations; reviews engineering calculations; participates in pre-design, construction, and coordination meetings and issues construction permits.
• Develops consultant requests for proposal for professional and/or construction services and the advertising and bid processes; evaluates proposals and recommends project award; administers contracts after award; ensures contractor compliance with Town standards and specifications, time and budget estimates; analyzes and resolves complex problems that may arise; recommends and approves field changes as required.
• Monitors and pursues grant opportunities for improvements in public works programs.
• Participates in the development of the Town’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP)
• Participates in the San Mateo County Cleanwater Program and assists with compliance and reporting associated with the Municipal Regional (NPDES) Stormwater Permit.
• Performs other related duties as required.

SELECTION PROCESS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities, which would be typically acquired through:

Education & Experience

Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience professional engineering design, plan review, and project administration.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related engineering field.

Certification: Posses and maintain a valid certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California.

Knowledge of:

• Civil engineering principles, techniques, policies, and procedures,
• Principles and practices of capital improvement program budgeting, cost estimation, funding, project management, and contract administration,
• Basic principles, practices, procedures, and standards related to Town public works infrastructure development and maintenance, engineering, and surveying
• Practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting effective staff reports

Skills and Ability to:

• Prepare, understand, and interpret engineering construction plans, specifications, and other contract documents.
• Assist in and develop and administer contracts for professional services and construction in a public agency setting.
• Effectively represent the department and the Town in meetings with governmental agencies, community groups, and various business, professional, and regulatory organizations and individuals.
• Prepare and present clear, concise, and logical written and oral reports, correspondence, policies, procedures, legal descriptions, and other written materials.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with municipal officials, subordinate employees, contractors and the general public
• Keep accurate records and prepare clear and concise oral and written reports.

Definition: Under supervision, to provide leadership to recreation programs, activities or service; organizes and implements program elements and oversees participants; and performs related work as required.  This temporary part-time non-benefited position works an average of 8 -15 hours per week during each sports season.  This position requires afternoon and evening shifts.

Essential Duties:  Depending upon assignment, the duties of an After School Coach - Recreation Leader I , II or III may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 Assists in planning, organizing, scheduling and provides direct leadership to classes in a specialized phase of the recreation program, class or activities.

• Organizes, inventories and maintains necessary facilities and materials.
• Maintains group and individual discipline, and code of conduct.
• Implements a logical detailed sequence of activities to fit the abilities and interest of the participants.
• Keeps records of attendance, participation.
• Typical duties include: implementation of sports programming, record keeping, maintaining supplies, class development, and gym supervision.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Special Requirements:   Vision adequate to supervise participants in recreational programs; speak clearly; ability to bend stoop or crouch; physical stamina to supervise groups of youth participating in recreational programs; ability to work off-hours, shifts or events as required; strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds; and the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: 

• Common sports, games and recreation activities appropriate for all ages;
• Rules and techniques of common sports and games;
• Principles and methods used in organizing, conducting and supervising a program of recreational activities;
• Record keeping techniques;
• Basic first aid and safety practices and procedures;
• Customer service including greeting guests and providing recreation activity information.
• Recreation organization and implementation

 Ability to: 

• Implement and organize recreation program elements;
• Prioritize and handle multiple program tasks;
• Think and act quickly in emergencies;
• Judge situations and people accurately;
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
• Establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public;
• Perform work in a safe manner;
• Perform the physical duties of the job.

Education & Experience: 

Recreation Leader I:  Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 15 at time of appointment.  Must possess a work-permit. No previous experience required.

Recreation Leader II:  Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 16 at time of appointment.  Equivalent to three (3) months of full-time experience (approximately 500 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience in recreation programs or equivalent. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable. 

Recreation Leader III:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12) grade.  Equivalent to six (6) months full-time experience (approximately 1,000 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience equivalent to a Recreation Leader II with the City of Millbrae. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable.

License:  Must possess and maintain a valid CALIFORNIA Class C Operator's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles and a satisfactory driving record.

Certificates:  Must possess a first aid/CPR certification or be willing to obtain one

Service Standards:  

Must successfully complete background process.  All candidates will be fingerprinted pursuant to California State Law.  All successful candidates under age 18 must possess a work permit prior to hire.

Position: Landscape Maintenance Worker

The City of Redwood City seeks a Landscape Maintenance Worker who will assist in the maintenance of parks and landscaped areas.  Under supervision, the incumbent will operate a variety of landscape maintenance equipment and will perform the following duties:

• Perform a wide variety of general grounds and facility maintenance work including raking leaves, cleaning walkways, removing debris, cleaning restrooms, and related work.
• Water, weed, prune, renovate, and fertilize shrubs, trees, flowerbeds, and landscaped areas.
• Complete turf care including mowing, thatching, fertilizing, plugging, spraying, and installation of new turf areas with both seed and sod.
• Prepare soil and plant flowerbeds, shrubs, trees and landscape areas, including staking, fertilizing and other necessary procedures.
• Utilize a wide variety of hand and power tools and landscape maintenance equipment including a rotary gang mower tractor, rider mowers, tractors, trencher, sprayer, brush chipper and chainsaws.
• Move and install park and recreation equipment. Perform routine preventive maintenance on mowing equipment and hand and power tools used in the work.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

The incumbent may be required to work on weekends.

This is a non-benefited casual position.  A casual employee may not work more than 1000 hours per fiscal year.

The Challenge

As a Police Officer your duties will typically include patrolling assigned areas; interacting with the public; conducting criminal investigations; enforcing laws; investigating collisions; preserving the peace and writing reports. You will be assigned to one of three shifts spanning the 24-hour day and these shifts will periodically change. In the Patrol Section you will work three 12 hour and 20-minute workdays and have four days off. If you are assigned to any other Section, you will work four 10-hour workdays with three days off. As your skills develop you may be assigned to investigations; community policing,; traffic; canine; bicycle patrol; Special Weapons and Tactics Team; narcotics; or school resource officer.
