The City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Department is looking for responsible, enthusiastic, and team-oriented individuals to join our Team!

The Position:

The Community Services Coordinator is delegated lead responsibility for planning, implementing, and evaluating a program of activities or services within a specified program assignment, and, typically, for providing direct leadership in a portion of that assignment. This assignment may be a specifically defined programming area that is narrower in size or scope than those assigned to Supervisors or comprised of multiple delegated responsibilities. This position will coordinate programs and services for the Police Activities League (PAL). This position receives general supervision from higher-level recreation positions and may exercise functional and technical supervision over lower-level and part-time recreation personnel and volunteers.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a valid State of California driver’s license. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical ways to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:

• Experience: Two years of responsible paid leadership experience in recreation or a related human services setting
• Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college-level courses in recreation or a related field.

The candidate should know the basic principles and methods of planning, coordinating, and leading recreation and human services programs and activities. They should understand simple arithmetic and how to handle recreation equipment and materials.  A candidate should have knowledge of general office procedures and an understanding of community groups, activities, programs, and facilities. They should understand the basic principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluations. Bilingual ability in Spanish is highly desirable. A bilingual pay differential is available for candidates fluent in identified languages. Availability is required between 20 and 40 hours per week, depending on the time of year. Availability is typically Monday through Friday; however, occasional weeknights and weekends will be required for PAL special events.

Job Responsibilities:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Instruct and lead specialized recreation and human services activities in such areas as sports, cultural arts, programs for the handicapped, senior citizens, crafts, teens and other areas of leadership requiring leadership in a structured environment.
• Provide activities and general facility supervision and control at a community recreation center or special use facility.
• Coordinate, develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services in assigned program area. Perform a variety of office related functions including program registration, answering citizen inquiries both in person and on the telephone and maintaining routine records and reports as required.
• Observe and take precautions to secure the safety of participants and spectators.
• Assist in preparing program facilities for structured program activities and special events.
• Occasional driving of City vehicles to support programmatic needs, including transporting youth participants on field trips.

What You’ll Do

• Compile, analyze, and prepare updates for the department budget and assist in the development and monitoring of budget.

• Analyze cost and revenue trends in multiple funding sources; prepare a variety of fiscal, administrative and management reports, and oversee fixed asset inventory and equipment replacement program.

• Perform research and statistical analyses on administrative, fiscal, personnel, and operational problems.

• Identify, recommend, and develop department policy changes which are submitted to the Fire Chief for final review; review and analyze operating procedures to determine if opportunities exist to streamline processes or better serve our customers and make recommendations as necessary.

• Participate in the development and installation of new or revised programs, systems, procedures, and methods of operation.

Position Levels

• Recreation Leader 1: Current high school student 
• Recreation Leader 2: High school graduate or current college student 
• Senior Recreation Leader: College graduate with leadership experience

Education and Training

• Experience in recreational activities, effective communication and interaction skills with youth, and ability to collaborate with staff. Must be at least 16 years old.
• Recreation leader 1 and 2: Students under the age of 18 are required to obtain a work permit from their school. 
• All staff 18+ are required to pass a fingerprint check submitted to the Department of Justice. 
• Sr. Recreation Leader: Sufficient education and experience to satisfactorily perform the duties of the classification.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Electrical Technician

The Public Works Department’s Environmental Services Division (ESD) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s 15.7 million gallon per day (MGD) conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The WWTP serves a population of more than 140,000 with an annual operating budget in excess of $15 million and has a staff of 28 professional and technical personnel. The Position

• Install, maintain, repair and research a variety of supervisory controls and replacement electrical components that are part of advanced wastewater treatment processes such as aeration, filtration, disinfection and dichlorination, sludge dewatering, odor control, and an environmental laboratory.
• Perform wiring required for the installation of electronic equipment; electrical conductors in conduits; splice high and low voltage cables utilizing hand taping and pre- molded splice kits.
• Design, install, maintain, repair, test and construct electrical assemblies.
• Troubleshoot plant electrical systems, controls and related process equipment. Provide technical support for other work groups within Public Works.
• Specify, install, program, and repair various types of variable frequency motor drive systems.
• Fabricate, maintain, install, service, and calculate power load distributions to various motors and related equipment.
• Install and repair programmable logic controllers and install related hardware and software for control systems in conjunction with controls technician.
• Maintain and repair automatic control valves and associated control functions.
• Implement preventive maintenance and repair on motors from fractional to over 400 horsepower. Record and calculate current requirements for new electrical installations.
• Troubleshoot, perform inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs on industrial switchgear and high voltage equipment such as transformers, breakers, circuits, switches, relays, regulators and distribution panels.
• Specify, install, and inspect various types of conduit; isolate breakers and switches for major repairs; coordinate repairs and scheduled outages with operations staff.
• Conduct surveys to gather field data.
• Use aerial lifts, scaffolding and ladders.
• Prepare requisitions and associated documents for purchase of repair parts and supplies.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated costs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The WWTP Electrical Technician receives general supervision from the WWTP Maintenance Superintendent or higher level personnel and exercises technical and functional supervision over assigned technical and maintenance personnel.

The Senior Lunch Program Coordinator will oversee the daily operations of two senior lunch programs, ensuring high-quality service and a welcoming environment for participants. This role provides leadership and guidance to per diem staff, Title V workers, and volunteers of all ages, serving as a coach and mentor to support their success. Strong attention to grant-related requirements and food safety compliance is essential to maintaining program excellence and accountability.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a valid State of California driver’s license and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This position requires the ability to work independently while receiving direction from a supervisor, as well as the capacity to train, oversee, and collaborate effectively with volunteers and older adults. Strong attention to detail is essential, including the ability to maintain accurate records and submit documentation as required. Proficiency with computers, including experience using Microsoft Word and Excel, is required. Upon hire, the candidate must successfully obtain a State Food Handler Safety Certificate and pass all required background checks. A bilingual pay differential may be available for candidates fluent in identified languages.  Must be available Monday-Friday 10:00am-2:00pm.

Recreation Program Specialist Example Duties:

• Follow reservation protocol/procedure for patrons.
• Review menu provided by caterer, submit nutritional component breakdown to County for grant compliance, and prepare flyers for patron.
• Submit documentation/information associated with County nutrition grant to supervisor.
• Schedule and implement nutritional education for seniors and in-service training for staff and volunteers.
• Serve as liaison with caterer, grant provider and staff/volunteers.
• Implement food safety practices as outlined by the Health Department.
• Prior nutrition experience is desired, but not required. Training will be provided.
