The Assistant Recreation Coordinator plays a key role in supporting daily program operations at the Community Center by assisting Recreation Coordinators and Supervisors in implementing high-quality recreation programs, supervising staff and volunteers, supporting community events, and helping ensure that City recreation facilities are safe, organized, and welcoming for all participants. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Supervise, schedule, train, and provide functional direction to primarily part-time recreation staff and volunteers
• Lead and facilitate recreation activities such as group games, sports, arts & crafts, and enrichment programs
• Assist with planning program curriculum and implementing daily recreation program operations
• Assign staff roles and support development and implementation of program activities
• Set up, organize, monitor, and maintain recreation equipment, supplies, and activity spaces
• Ensure recreation facilities are clean, safe, and welcoming for public use
• Interact with participants and parents while modeling and enforcing program and facility safety rules
• Maintain attendance, activity logs, and related program documentation using recreation registration software
• Assist with purchasing supplies and materials for assigned programs
• Support marketing and outreach efforts through email, flyers, and social media
• Assist with seasonal community events and Youth Commission-related activities
• Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and other assigned duties

• Late December – Early January

Spring Break Camp:

• Late March – Early April

Position Levels

• Recreation Leader 1: Current high school student 
• Recreation Leader 2: High school graduate or current college student 
• Senior Recreation Leader: College graduate with leadership experience

Education and Training

• Experience in recreational activities, effective communication and interaction skills with youth, and ability to collaborate with staff. Must be at least 16 years old.
• Recreation leader 1 and 2: Students under the age of 18 are required to obtain a work permit from their school. 
• All staff 18+ are required to pass a fingerprint check submitted to the Department of Justice. 
• Sr. Recreation Leader: Sufficient education and experience to satisfactorily perform the duties of the classification.

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to enhance the quality of life and strengthen the bonds of community by providing an appropriate mix of safe, well-maintained and well-designed parks, open spaces, and community center facilities that are accessible for all residents; provide enriching leisure opportunities for all age groups; and to preserve and protect the City’s natural resources, including its urban forest, public open spaces, and landscaped medians and islands.

The Community Services Coordinator is a vital position in the Recreation Division providing outstanding program delivery and service.  The Recreation Division offers a variety of recreation activities, including preschool programs; senior programs; aquatics; dance & fitness; music, fine arts & crafts; special events; sports; mobile recreation; camps and after-school programs.  We are seeking a motivated candidate to join our diverse and passionate team dedicated to providing exceptional public service.

The Position

The Community Services Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating a specific program area within the Recreation Division.  This assignment is typically a more defined program area that is narrower in size or scope than those assigned to Supervisors.  Coordinators excel at the following:

• Instruct and lead specialized recreation and human services activities requiring leadership in a structured environment;
• Provide activities and general facility supervision and control at a community recreation center or special use facility;
• Coordinate, develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services;
• Perform office, administrative, public information and activity intake responsibilities;
• Assist in preparing program facilities for structured program activities and special events.

The Community Services Coordinator receives general supervision from higher-level recreation positions and may exercise functional and technical supervision over lower level and part-time recreation personnel and volunteers.

The Position:

The Senior Lunch Program Coordinator will oversee the daily operations of two senior lunch programs, ensuring high-quality service and a welcoming environment for participants. This role provides leadership and guidance to per diem staff, Title V workers, and volunteers of all ages, serving as a coach and mentor to support their success. Strong attention to grant-related requirements and food safety compliance is essential to maintaining program excellence and accountability.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a valid State of California driver’s license and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This position requires the ability to work independently while receiving direction from a supervisor, as well as the capacity to train, oversee, and collaborate effectively with volunteers and older adults. Strong attention to detail is essential, including the ability to maintain accurate records and submit documentation as required. Proficiency with computers, including experience using Microsoft Word and Excel, is required. Upon hire, the candidate must successfully obtain a State Food Handler Safety Certificate and pass all required background checks. A bilingual pay differential may be available for candidates fluent in identified languages.  Must be available Monday-Friday 10:00am-2:00pm.

Recreation Program Specialist Example Duties:

• Follow reservation protocol/procedure for patrons.
• Review menu provided by caterer, submit nutritional component breakdown to County for grant compliance, and prepare flyers for patron.
• Submit documentation/information associated with County nutrition grant to supervisor.
• Schedule and implement nutritional education for seniors and in-service training for staff and volunteers.
• Serve as liaison with caterer, grant provider and staff/volunteers.
• Implement food safety practices as outlined by the Health Department.
• Prior nutrition experience is desired, but not required. Training will be provided.

Recreation Specialist II staff take an active role in activity leadership and participant supervision while supporting Recreation Specialists I. Strong attention to developmentally appropriate practices and safety compliance is essential.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be at least 18 years of age or possess a high school diploma or equivalent and preferably have at least one season or comparable experience working in a classroom, after-school program, or camp environment. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills when working with youth, families, and staff, and be able to work independently while following direction from higher-level recreation staff. The position requires individuals who show leadership and initiative in the implementation of program activities and who work cooperatively as part of a team. Successful candidates must pass all required background checks upon hire. Availability is required Monday through Friday from May through August between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Recreation Specialist II Example Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Collaborate with Recreation staff to Plan and lead developmentally appropriate activities for children ages 5–12
• Provide professional guidance and support to Recreation Specialist I staff
• Assist with behavior management using positive youth development practices
• Support daily program routines, including sign-in/sign-out procedures and transitions
• Supervise participants during activities, swim days, and field trips
• Communicate appropriately with families and participants
• Assist with maintaining program supplies and equipment
• Participate in staff meetings and training as assigned
• Follow established safety procedures and program guidelines
