The Department of Public Works is seeking highly motivated individuals with great technical and interpersonal skills to join our team as Automotive Service Workers.
 

Under general supervision, Automotive Service Workers perform a variety of semi-skilled automotive and equipment maintenance tasks which include the full range of lubrication and minor repair services, and routine service-related duties such as pumping gas and changing oil; perform skilled sub-journey mechanic work and learn journey-level mechanics under the direct supervision of an Automotive Mechanic or Automotive Service Supervisor.

Automotive Service Workers are assigned to the Vehicle and Equipment Services Section of the Department of Public Works. The Vehicle and Equipment Services Section maintains, inspects, services, and repairs County motor vehicles including school and other buses, trucks, equipment, Sheriff's Office vehicles, and motor pool vehicles. Our service and repair stations are located in Redwood City and San Mateo.

Ideal candidates for this position will possess:

• At least one year of verifiable professional work experience in Automotive Services and experience with hybrid and basic computer diagnostic. 
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is preferred.
• Great organizational and multitasking skills.

Important Notes About the Position: 

• Automotive Service Workers can be required to work at various locations throughout San Mateo County. 
• The candidate appointed to the position must possess their own set of tools in order to perform the responsibilities of this position.  
• Individuals hired as Automotive Service Workers must possess a Class C California driver license or equivalent and must obtain a Class B California driver license within one year from date of hire.

Examples Of Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Install, inspect, repair and replace electrical and ignition systems, including generator, voltage regulator, battery and emergency equipment.
• Install, inspect, repair and replace fuel systems including pumps, filters, carburetors, and fuel injection.
• Inspect, repair and replace exhaust system muffler and exhaust pipes; perform exhaust emissions testing and repair.
• Inspect, replace and repair cooling systems, pumps, thermostats, radiators and hoses.
• Inspect and replace shock absorbers, tie rods, ball joints, kingpins, idler arms, and steering arms.
• Inspect, repair and replace master cylinders, wheel cylinders, pads, linings, calipers, and brake drums and rotors.
• Inspect engines, transmissions and differentials for leaks and cracks.
• Perform routine tune-ups of vehicles, which includes air cleaner, spark plugs, points, condenser; inspect, repair or replace wires, belts, distributor; clean and adjust the carburetor and set the timing.
• Replace coils, coil over plugs, injectors and use fuel injector cleaner.
• Lube chassis; change oil and oil filters; inspect, clean and service air cleaners.
• Repair and mount tubes and tires; balance wheels; unload and store tires.
• Clean and pack wheel bearings, and U-joints.
• Inspect and replace batteries, cables and terminals.
• Inspect, adjust or replace door, hood, trunk latches; install seat belts.
• Replace and adjust headlights and taillights; replace minor parts such as light bulbs, fuses and windshield wiper blades, radiator and gas tank caps.
• Service vehicles with gas or propane, oil, water, coolant, transmission and brake fluids.
• Wash and clean vehicles; vacuum interiors; steam clean chassis, engines and other components.
• Inventory and stock supplies, provide order list to Supervisor; pick up and deliver auto parts.
• Repair and replace parts of transmission and differential and parts of engine.
• Perform BIT, school bus and related mandated inspections.
• Test drive vehicles after inspection and repair.
• Receive complaints concerning vehicles and prepare service request forms.
• Direct the work of seasonal, extra help, trustees, and work furlough workers assigned to motor pool.
• Observe safety regulations, change and prevent hazardous situations, bring hazards to supervisor's attention.
• Drive and operate tow truck and other medium sized trucks; drive and operate forklift; transport vehicles to various locations.
• Complete repair order forms noting parts and labor hours used.
• Empty trash, sweep and mop floors, clean sinks, mirrors and auto equipment in assigned work area.
• Prepare trip tickets for vehicles and dispatch to County employees.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Licensure/Certification:

• Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent.
• Must obtain a class B California driver license or equivalent within one year of appointment.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

• One year of experience performing automotive service work.

Knowledge of:

• Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in servicing motor vehicles.
• Common automotive equipment cleaning methods.
• Common automotive parts and supplies.
• Proper condition of various auto parts, and procedures for ensuring proper condition and operation.
• Electrical, braking, air conditioning and heating, suspension and cooling system.
• Service and repair of hybrid and alternate fuel vehicles. 

Skill/Ability to: 

• Perform general service work on vehicles.
• Perform heavy manual labor.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Follow safety rules, procedures, and practices.
• Use common automotive service tools and equipment including air wrenches, lifting jacks, tach and dwell meter, cooling system tester, and battery generator tester, brake bleeder, cooling system testers, and volt-ohm meters.
• Use chassis lubrication equipment.
• Check proper condition of tires, belts, hoses, wiper blades and batteries.
• Change tires.
• Perform simple arithmetic.
• Diagnose and repair a wide variety of minor mechanical problems.
• Operate a wide variety of motor vehicles.
• Stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• Lift and carry equipment and supplies used in the course of work.
• Work courteously and effectively with the public and co-workers.

Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of a scored relevant Training and Experience (T&E) (weight: pass/fail) based solely on the candidates' responses to the supplemental questions. Applicants who receive a passing score in the T&E evaluation will be invited to a Performance Exam (weight: 100%). About the Position:

The Ranger Recruit is a trainee-level position for individuals who do not possess a Ranger Academy certificate or equivalent, or valid PC 832 certificate.  Upon commencement of employment, new Ranger Recruits will participate in pre-academy instruction on the duties of a District Ranger, receive orientation to District lands and operations and complete additional required training.  Upon completion of pre-academy instruction, new Ranger Recruits will participate in a district approved Park Ranger Law Enforcement Academy based out of the South Bay Regional Training Center in San Jose, CA located on Bailey Avenue with the nearest cross street on Santa Teresa Avenue.  The 14-week long academy begins in January 2027 and will include the California Penal Code 832 training.  Upon successful completion of the academy and the District’s required robust 12-week Field Training program and final review by the Chief Ranger, a Ranger Recruit may be appointed as a probationary Ranger.   

The Ranger is a challenging and adventurous journey level position offering a wide variety of responsibilities and opportunities to exercise independent judgement while working on Midpen preserves.   

What does a District Ranger do?  District Rangers are Generalist Rangers who perform a wide variety of functions. A brief list of day-to-day activities follows:

• Midpen Rangers are sworn peace officers responsible for patrolling District Preserves and enforcing the District's regulations and pertinent local, State, and Federal laws on District Preserves. Patrol may be by 4x4 truck, foot, UTV, motorcycle, or mountain bike.  
• Respond to medical emergencies, wildland fires and search and rescue incidents.
• Help maintain the preserves by performing light maintenance tasks and resource management assignments.
• Engage the public through interpretive activities and community outreach.
• Shift schedules include evening, weekend, and holiday hours.

Peace Officer Standards for Rangers: Applicants must meet the standards for being a California Peace Officer as outlined in Government Code Section 1031.  Ranger Recruits must complete Midpen's requirements for training of Peace Officers by attending and successfully completing a Midpen approved law enforcement academy upon hire, unless they have successfully passed an equivalent academy, and possess a California Penal Code 832 certificate.

• Certificates and Licenses: A valid California Class C driver’s license.

Ranger

• Meet all qualifications for Ranger Recruit, plus:
• Certificates and Licenses:  Current possession of a District approved Law Enforcement Training certification and a valid California 832 certificate for appointment as a peace officer, and ability to obtain the following certificates prior to completion of the employment probationary period: completion of the District’s Field Training Program, valid professional rescuer CPR certificate and Medical First Responder or equivalent; a Midpen approved Fire Suppression Training certificate; certification in the Incident Command System courses as specified under the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

Working Conditions:  Rangers work cohesively with local law enforcement, fire agencies and other adjoining land agencies. Rangers typically work alone and self initiate their day-to-day patrols. Work conditions require rangers to work weekends, nights, and holidays in all weather conditions.  Most work is outdoors within Midpen’s open space lands with exposure to inclement weather conditions. This requires the ability to patrol on foot, off trail, and in rugged terrain.  Also requires the ability to perform all related emergency services and light maintenance and construction work on Midpen lands. District Rangers interact daily with a diverse Bay Area community to provide safe access for all visitors. 

TYPICAL STEPS IN THE HIRING PROCESS:

Attending a practice session is strongly recommended, as it allows potential candidates to gauge their ability to pass the physical agility test by the end of the academy.

The Officers are generalists who typically handle cases from the first response, through investigation, and onto final disposition. In addition, Officers frequently assist the Chief of Police with administrative duties and consult closely with him in the formulation of Departmental policies, procedures, and tactics. THE POSITION:

The Police Officer Trainee position is an entry level position, requiring no prior law enforcement experience. The Police Officer Trainee is a temporary employee.  The trainee attends a P.O.S.T. certified academy.  Upon successful completion of the academy, the trainee will be eligible for appointment to the position of Police Officer.  New Police Officers will receive benefits available to regular employees and will serve an 18-month probationary period.

The Newark Police Department is a modern, progressive law enforcement agency with 59 sworn and 27 professional staff employees. Well qualified officers enjoy specialty assignments and promotions based upon training and experience. State of the art safety equipment, including, individually issued patrol rifles with sighting systems, Ballistic Helmets, Smart Phones and an Armored Rescue Vehicle.

Numerous specialty assignments, most with premium pay incentives, to include: Detectives, Field Training Officer (FTO), Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), Traffic Division, School Resource Officers (SRO), Major Crimes Task Force, K-9, S.W.A.T. Team, Crowd Management Team (CMT), Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Team, Honor Guard, Firearms Instructor, Use of Force Instructor, and Taser Instructor. Officers enjoy either a 3/12 or 4/10 work week, depending on assignment.

The City of Brisbane is currently recruiting certified Swim Instructors for our beautiful outdoor aquatic facility. Swim Instructors instruct organized aquatic safety and swim classes with the safety standards and procedures set by the American Red Cross. Swim Instructors may also serve as Lifeguards (if certified), whose duties include patrolling and watching the activities in and around the community swimming pool, enforcing regulations to prevent accidents, and rescuing swimmers in distress.
