THE DEPARTMENT

The Fire Department operates five (5) fire stations throughout the City which are staffed 24-hours per day, plus an Emergency Operations Center and Fire Training Tower. The Fire Department is an active participant in the San Mateo County automatic aid system and responds regularly in support of neighboring jurisdictions throughout the county, including the San Francisco International Airport.  Department members are eligible to participate on FEMA USAR California Task Force 3, sponsored by the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.  The department is also an active participant in the Bay Area Maritime Search and Rescue Council and regularly trains with other fire agencies and the United States Coast Guard.  

The City is planning for the replacement and expansion of two of its existing fire stations, modernizing and relocating the facilities to better serve the public.

In support of the San Mateo County automatic aid agreement, all entry level candidates will attend a regional, county-wide, fire academy where they will be introduced to all agencies in the county and rotate through a variety of training sites.  The roughly 12-week academy also includes specialized training depending on candidate certifications.

The Skywalker Fire Brigade Fire Chief (FC) position will supervise, lead, and train the Skywalker Fire Brigade (Department). This is a management position for 9 employees that staffs one private fire station and has the opportunity to build and direct a motivated staff of firefighters. The Fire Chief will oversee three duty Captains and their projects, providing guidance and leadership for the organization. The Fire Chief will oversee daily schedules with regard to standard prevention activities, training, and special events. Oversee fire prevention inspections, lead vegetation management projects including pile burning, shaded fuel breaks, and interact with the property insurance agent and facilities manager for future projects. The Chief will represent the Skywalker Fire Brigade during county-wide meetings for Operations and Training. Skywalker Fire employees provide an extraordinary level of customer service and hospitality to Skywalker Properties' clientele. While this role operates within a Brigade fire department, the position itself is mostly comprised of prevention and training. This is a great opportunity to train and develop individuals in a unique, private environment with a dedicated and passionate team to support our mission.

Skywalker Holdings has several locations. The Fire Brigade operates at The Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, Nicasio, CA. Skywalker is a private organization that operates 5,000 acres of wildland urban interface land with various types of infrastructure within it. At the Presidio (San Francisco, CA) there are numerous buildings that are also included in the prevention responsibilities. The Ranch operates numerous buildings, smaller organization and other operations within the that support the greater vision of Skywalker Properties Ltd.  

Schedule:

This position will work a semi-flexible 40hr work week as to oversee and manage 3 shifts who are on a 48/96 work schedule. Flexibility is determined by the President and subject to department need as well attending any critical meetings with leadership teams. Remote work hours may be included in the flexibility.

Although rare, there are times when the Chief might have to back-fill staffing and/or provide staffing on apparatus due to non-fillable vacancies or training needs.

DEFINITION
Under general supervision to perform general duty firefighting and fire prevention activities; to respond to  emergency calls; to operate and maintain firefighting apparatus and equipment; to assist and participate in fire training programs and fire station maintenance: and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification includes a variety of assignments in preventing, controlling and extinguishing fires, performing emergency medical care and rescue operations, public education activities, and maintenance operations. While time spent fighting fires constitutes a small fraction of the scheduled work time, incumbents must be able to meet such emergencies and the hazards which may involve considerable physical exertion, and potential risk to health and safety.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Graduation from high school or equivalent. (College level course work in fire science desirable).

License/Certification: 

• Possession of a valid Commercial Class B California Driver's License OR a valid Class C California Driver's License with a Firefighter Endorsement, as currently provided by law.
• Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1) Certificate.

Age:

• Twenty-one (21) years of age for entrance.

The Role:

The City of Redwood City is seeking Firefighter/Engineers who are licensed paramedics. Under direction of the Fire Captain, the Firefighter/Engineer will perform firefighting and fire prevention duties aimed at protecting life and property, operate and maintain firefighting equipment, and provide basic medical assistance.  Firefighter/Engineers also provide Advanced Life Support first responder pre-hospital emergency medical care and emergency medical assistance, perform minor station maintenance, and participate in training to maintain skills.  Please see the Firefighter/Engineer Paramedic job description  for more details.

A typical way to demonstrate the applicant possesses the required knowledge and ability may be obtained through the following ways:

1. Two years (2) of full-time firefighting service.
2. Possession of a California State Fire Training Firefighter I certificate is required.
3. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.
4. Must have a valid Paramedic License from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and will need to obtain San Mateo County Paramedic accreditation prior to completing probationary period.

THE POSITION

The Wildfire Program Support Specialist provides operational, administrative, and technical support for the San Rafael Fire Department's wildfire prevention, mitigation, and community risk-reduction programs.  The Specialist will support the Wildfire Mitigation Program through the implementation of the San Rafael Wildfire Prevention and Protection Plan and Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MWPA) goals.  The position works closely with fire prevention staff, vegetation management personnel, contractors, community organizations, and residents to ensure efficient program delivery and high-quality customer service.  This role supports planning, data tracking, public education, defensible space evaluations, grant administration, and logistics for wildfire-related initiatives.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

• Support the implementation of the San Rafael Wildfire Prevention and Protection Action Plan and Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority workplan in an inclusive and equitable manner.
• Provide various administrative support services including but not limited to inputting invoices, contracts, and purchase orders, budget tracking, meeting support and responding to resident inquiries.
• Assist in coordinating contractors, scheduling inspections, and maintaining project timelines and documentation.  
• Conduct field support tasks such as collecting site information, documenting parcel conditions, preparing inspection forms, and entering data into department databases.  
• Maintain, organize, and update program data, reports, maps, and digital records.
• Assist with grant tracking, reporting, reimbursements, and documentation requirements.
• Support development and delivery of public education materials, community outreach events, and preparedness workshops.
• Provide logistical support for equipment, supplies, signage, and daily field operations.
• Prepare written summaries, report, presentations, and correspondence for supervisors and stakeholders.

Responds to fire alarms with fire company; connects and lays hose lines; operates nozzles and applies fire streams on fire surfaces; carries and operates hand extinguishers; carries and uses ladders, ropes, axes and other equipment; enters burning structures to combat fires and remove occupants; lays salvage covers and protects exposures and performs salvage operations; responds to emergency rescue calls, administers appropriate emergency first aid to victims; conducts inspections of buildings and properties for compliance with safety codes; conducts public information/education programs for the public; attends and participates in fire department training programs, maintains required skills; inspects, and performs appropriate preventative maintenance on vehicles, apparatus, equipment and fire hydrants, assists in the maintenance of fire station and grounds; as assigned drives and operates fire apparatus; receives and transmits radio messages and prepares and completes forms and reports; and performs other tasks as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to: Learn firefighting techniques, principles and practices; learn the basic operation and mechanics of firefighting equipment, streets and locations and the locations of hydrants, mains, and major fire hazards; learn to operate apparatus and equipment in conformance with safety procedures; demonstrate physical endurance, agility, dexterity and strength necessary to perform required duties; understand and act in accordance with Fire Department and City Rules and Regulations, policies and procedures; to follow written and oral directions; perform in a calm and efficient manner under stress; analyze emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action; respond to orders from supervisors; perform cooperatively and effectively as a member of a team; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. (College level course work in fire science desirable).

License/Certification:

Possesion of a valid Commercial Class B  California Driver's License OR a valid Class C California Driver's License with a Firefighter Endorsement, as currently provided by law.

            Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1) Certificate

Age: Twenty-one (21) years of age for entrance.

Physical: Weight commensurate with height and build. Normal visual functions and visual acuity not less than 20/70 vision in each eye without corrections, and corrected to 20/20 in the better eye and not less than 20/30 in the lesser eye; normal hearing; freedom from color blindness.

San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department

The Opportunity:

To perform technical inspection and investigative work in enforcing compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fires; and do related work as required. The Fire Prevention Inspector I/II position is flexibly staffed based on experience.

This is the entry level class in the Fire Prevention Inspection series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Prevention Inspector II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including weed abatement and smoke detector inspections, which do not require prior specialized experience. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures and exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

What You’ll Do:

• Interpret and enforce provisions of fire prevention and fire safety laws, ordinances, and other regulations.
• Perform periodic inspections of new and existing buildings, structures and installations requiring fire clearances; identify fire hazards; recommend corrective actions; perform follow-up inspections to see that corrective actions have been taken.
• Investigate complaints pertaining to violation of fire prevention laws; issue correction orders as necessary.
• Investigate fires; secure fire scenes; identify types of fires; investigate causes of fire; collect, prepare, and present evidence; interview witnesses and suspects; write fire investigations; testify in court when required.
• Provide information to the public concerning the fire prevention practices and procedures; develop and conduct training programs and group presentations relative to fire prevention and fire investigation.
• Instruct fire suppression crews about code interpretation and inspection techniques regarding fire prevention.
• Draw and prepare diagrams of buildings for pre-fire planning and fire inspections.
• Check building plans for code compliance, consult with architects and developers regarding problems and solutions.
• Perform tests on water flow, sprinkler and fire alarms and elevator return systems; certify smoke detectors.
• Prepare records and reports.
• Provide information to the public in forums and meetings.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
