You will have the opportunity for exposure to various areas of City Administration during your internship and to network with fellow interns and participate in professional development activities in San Mateo County and/or Santa Clara County.

GIS Intern projects for 2026 include:

• Conducting research on easements and reference maps using:
  • San Mateo County’s Property Maps Portal
  • Paper files in the Planning Department
  • Existing folders on the shared drive
  • Microfiche records at the San Mateo County Assessor’s Recorder’s Office
• Maintaining a tracking log documenting:
  • Properties researched
  • Easements found and mapped
  • Easements referenced but not located
• Using ArcGIS Pro to map discovered easements

City Clerk Intern project for 2026:

• Records Management – Assist in project oversight of our records management project, create innovative best practices to implement the records retention schedule and policy, and support the daily records management tasks in the City Clerk’s Office

The City of Brisbane will be sponsoring a History internship with the City Manager's Office. Our internships are project-oriented and designed to give college students a good general overview of future employment opportunities and current issues in the Public Sector. You will have the opportunity for exposure to various areas of City Administration during your internship and to network with fellow interns and participate in professional development activities in San Mateo County and/or Santa Clara County.

The History Intern will work closely with staff in the City Manager’s Office to help preserve and protect the City’s History Collection, ensuring materials are properly safeguarded and prepared in the event of a disaster. This role includes digitizing and photographing historical items, accurately cataloging them in the City’s archival system, and supporting ongoing records management efforts. The intern will also collaborate with the City Council History Subcommittee to research, plan, and develop future exhibits for the Library’s History Room, helping make the City’s rich history accessible and engaging for the community.

The City of Brisbane's Public Works Department will be sponsoring two summer internships this year. Our internships are project-oriented and designed to give college students a good general overview of future employment opportunities and current issues in the Public Sector.  You will have the opportunity for exposure to various areas of City Administration during your internship and to network with fellow interns and participate in professional development activities in San Mateo County and/or Santa Clara County.

Projects for 2026 include:

• Public Works (Engineering & Operations Support) – Provide support to the City’s Public Works Department across engineering, development review, and capital project delivery. Primary assignment will focus on documenting and improving development review processes, including application completeness and interdepartmental coordination. Secondary assignments may include assisting with capital improvement program tracking, permit review analysis, and evaluation of asset management systems to support more efficient service delivery.

• Public Works (Utilities) – Provide support to the City's Public Works Department - Utilities Division with various engineering projects in drinking water distribution, water resources, sanitary sewer collection, and storm drainage. Primary assignment will focus on mapping and geolocating drinking water facilities to comply with new state regulatory compliance.  Secondary assignments may include field engineering support on construction of capital utility projects and assisting with various engineering reports and studies.

About the City

The City of Half Moon Bay is a Bay Area coastal community of approximately 12,500 residents and is located 25 miles south of San Francisco. The City is governed by a five-member elected City Council and utilizes the council-manager form of government. The City Council appoints a City Manager who is responsible for the oversight of daily operations and provides leadership for the City’s programs. The City currently employs 40 full-time employees in the following departments: City Manager’s Office, Administrative Services and Finance, Community Development, Public Works, and Communications/ City Clerk. The City also contracts Public Safety with San Mateo County Sheriff's Department.

The City and surrounding Coastside are a thriving agricultural, fishing, tourism, and recreational destination. There is a rich culture of diverse traditions and multi-generational families who have lived in Half Moon Bay for well over 100 years. About the Position

The Public Works Department is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic intern with an interest in engineering, project management, and public service. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in local government operations and civil engineering under general supervision and mentorship from professional staff.

The selected intern will assist with a variety of projects and ongoing assignments, which may include but are not limited to:

• Assisting with Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects, including design and construction

• Supporting engineering project managers with clerical, administrative, and technical tasks

• Researching and analyzing programs and initiatives

• Updating internal procedures and policies

• Creating and editing CAD maps, designs, and standards (AutoCAD)

• Participating in field data collection, investigations, and analysis

• Researching development, zoning, and land use-related issues

• Performing engineering support services

• Drafting and editing reports

• Providing customer service

• Attending departmental and community meetings

• Opportunity to present a report to the City Council

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Education & Experience

• Some completed coursework toward an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or a related field is desired but not required.

Knowledge of:

• Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)

• Adobe software (Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop)

• AutoCAD

• Local government operations (preferred)

Ability to:

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

• Work cooperatively with City staff

• Perform analytical work and prepare clear, concise reports

• Use tact and discretion in public and professional interactions

• Plan, organize, and complete projects on time

• Interpret and apply administrative and departmental policies
