The Position 

The City of San Bruno Fire Department is offering a unique career opportunity to those who desire a challenge and wish to work in a dynamic urban setting. The City seeks a self-motivated Fire Inspector to ensure that the City’s fire inspection program provides an excellent level of service to the surrounding community. Under the general supervision of a Fire Battalion Chief / Fire Marshal, the Fire Inspector performs the full range of fire inspection duties including fire and life safety inspection, plan review, code enforcement activities, and assistance with fire investigations. 

The Fire Inspector is a hard-working and dedicated individual with experience and ability to perform a full range of fire prevention duties, including inspecting residential, commercial and industrial units for compliance with safety laws and ordinances, as well as maintaining complete and accurate records of fire safety codes, regulations, ordinances, inspections, violations, and penalties. 

In addition to the technical duties involved with fire inspection, the Fire Inspector will have opportunities to educate and enrich the San Bruno community by planning and conducting public education programs and outreach regarding fire prevention, make presentations to civic organizations and school groups, as well as observing fire drills in schools, convalescent homes, businesses, and other places within the City.  

The Fire Inspector will also work cooperatively with internal City departments on inspections and projects, provide expert guidance and direct support for plan check reviews, including providing professional-level reviews, comments, and recommendations to ensure that work conforms to current fire code standards and established City policy and procedure.  

This position upholds fire inspection best practices, serves as an integral team player and demonstrates flexibility, cooperation, and communication, adheres to labor and safety guidelines, ensures compliance with policy and procedures, respects the cultural and ethnic diversity of the community, represents the City with dignity, integrity, and the spirit of cooperation in all relations with staff and the public, and performs in a manner that upholds the values of the City. 

In addition to one year of experience in fire and life safety prevention inspection or a related field  (two years of firefighting experience may be substituted for the one year of fire and life safety experience experience), a special requirement to be 21 years of age or older (per Health and Safety Penal Code 830.37), and the successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation.  

Ideal Candidate 

The ideal candidate will possess a California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector I and/or II certification and certification from the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC), and demonstrate a successful track record of:

The City of Menlo Park is currently accepting applications to fill a Mechanic vacancy in the Fleet Services Section of the Public Works Department. A Mechanic performs diagnostic, maintenance and repair services on light and heavy city vehicles and equipment, such as automobiles, storm/sewer trucks, aerial bucket trucks, dump trucks shuttle buses, construction equipment, lawn mowers, small equipment and stationary generators; and performs other duties as assigned.

The Mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level or advanced journey-level class mechanical ability and aptitude. Work assignments are performed according to established rules and procedures. Independent judgment is required and is supported by supervisory review and direction.

Equipment Mechanic

This is the journey-level class in the Equipment Mechanic classification series responsible for performing the full range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, gasoline and diesel repair and maintenance required for City vehicles, and equipment. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of assigned vehicles and equipment. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from other maintenance class series in that it performs more highly skilled technical and mechanical maintenance activities. This class is distinguished from Senior Equipment Mechanic in that the latter leads, trains, and oversees assigned work and performs the more complex and difficult work in mechanical maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment.

Senior Equipment Mechanic

This is the advanced journey-level class in the equipment mechanic classification series performing the most complex duties required to ensure that City vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for City use, and providing lead direction and training to full-time and temporary staff. Incumbents regularly work on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment. Positions in this classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned section. The work involves problem-solving of unique issues or increasingly complex problems without precedent and/or structure. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver work products. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. This classification is distinguished from the Fleet Supervisor in that the latter has oversight of the entire fleet division, system- assignments and projects, and responsibility for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of assigned staff involved in maintenance operations.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Business Operations Coordinator (BOC) is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring efficient systems to manage the District’s business office, properties, entrepreneurial enterprises, service and vendor contracts, media management, and IT support services. This includes ensuring compliance with regulatory mandates, facility requirements, and workplace safety.

The BOC is a full-time exempt position that reports directly to the CEO.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. 1. Provides comprehensive administrative and operational support to ensure effective implementation and community impact.
   1. Coordinates District-sponsored and community outreach events—in both virtual and in-person formats—in collaboration with District leadership.
   2. Provides oversight of the District office operations to identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, inventory and supplies management, document, and key security, tracking annual policy review and report filing requirements, and utilization of classroom facilities.
   3. Maintains a clean, well-organized office environment for team and visitors.
   4. Assists the Strategic Initiatives Director in managing the Community Health Investment portfolio, including utilizing and maintaining the District’s grant management software to track and support the community grants program.
   5. Oversees and manages district office operations and leasing budgets.
   6. Maintains IT services, triaging issues, tracking performance of various pieces of equipment, and helping identify IT issues that may benefit from more user training.
   7. Assists with accounting tasks as directed by CEO, including processing bank deposits and printing checks with Staff Accountant.
   8. Maintains a system for managing and regularly auditing vendor contracts to ensure compliance with performance obligations and identify opportunities for cost and service improvements.
   9. Contributes to the overall success of the District by providing support to programs and initiatives as assigned by the CEO.
2. Serving as primary PHCD contact for tenants, property manager, and vendors serving the eight District-owned properties This includes such activities as:
   1. Tracks lease terms and rent increases and taking timely, appropriate actions via Doorloop.
   2. Maintains effective tenant relationships with professionals and their staff.
   3. Establishes and carrying out a preventative maintenance program for all buildings in collaboration with the CFO and property manager.
   4. Primary liaison for facilities consultants
   5. Makes periodic rounds to ensure tenants are compliant with their property maintenance obligations.
   6. Works with leasing agent when a vacancy occurs.
3. Overseeing and strengthening all District communication channels, ensuring consistency, compliance, and effective public engagement.
   1. Manages all District websites are compliant with regulatory and special district transparency requirements, content is current, and sites are “user-friendly”
   2. Serves as primary liaison with the District’s communications and website professionals
   3. Serves as primary point person for coordinating, producing, and tracking analytics of external communications for websites, e-newsletter, social media, and related materials, in collaboration with the CEO, Directors, and District communications and marketing professionals.
4. In the absence of the Executive Assistant:
   1. Provides administrative support to Board Members, Board Committees, including scheduling meetings, preparing and distributing noticed meeting materials, and coordinating meeting logistics.
   2. Supports the CEO and Board with daily calendar management, communications, event and conference bookings, annual board policy review, staff meetings, and District transparency recertifications.
5. And all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Experience supporting administrative staff
• Working for or with government/public agencies in California (preferred, not required)
• Experience with a range of standard office equipment
• Experience with technology modalities, including setting up of devices and light technology troubleshooting
• Excellent experience with PC/ including Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Google

Associates degree or 2+ years of office experience. Experience working for an administrative
office, government agency or local municipality is highly desirable.

COMPENSATION & BENEFIT S
This is a full-time position. Compensation range based on experience: $55,000 - $85,000.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Woodland Public Works Department is seeking a motivated Civic Fellow to support and enhance fleet data management operations. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in municipal asset management and public sector budgeting.

The Civic Fellow will assist in updating and maintaining the City’s fleet management system, ensuring accurate records for vehicle assets, reserve fund balances, and fixed and variable rate information. Working closely with Public Works and Finance staff, the Fellow will help develop streamlined data management processes within the RTA fleet management software, improving operational efficiency and reporting accuracy.

This fellowship provides practical exposure to fleet asset tracking, financial record-keeping, and interdepartmental collaboration, equipping participants with valuable skills in data management, system implementation, and public sector operations setting the foundation for an exciting career in municipal government.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Ideal Candidate is a detail-oriented, organized, and motivated student or recent graduate with a strong interest in data management, fleet operations, and asset management. They are eager to gain hands-on experience using fleet management software to maintain accurate vehicle asset records, reserve fund balances, and fixed and variable rate information.

This individual is proficient with computer software systems, including spreadsheets and data tracking tools, and demonstrates the ability to efficiently organize, analyze, and maintain electronic records. Experience with databases or enterprise systems, as well as the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software applications, is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate communicates clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, and thrives in a collaborative environment, working closely with Finance and Public Works staff. They are proactive, willing to ask questions, and committed to learning complex processes while contributing to improving data quality, record-keeping, and documentation practices.

THE POSITION OBJECTIVES/GOALS
The goals of this position are to:

1. Accurately update fleet asset data in the City’s fleet management system (RTA), including vehicle asset records, reserve fund balances, and fixed and variable rate.

2. Accurately review existing records, identifying discrepancies or missing information, and coordinating with Public Works and Finance staff to verify and correct data.

3. Standardize and document data entry practices for fleet financial and asset information, including clear procedures for rate updates, reserve balance tracking, and vehicle record maintenance.

4. Improve data quality and reporting readiness by developing procedures to ensure fleet and financial records are complete, current, and aligned with internal reporting and budget preparation needs.

5. Provide technical support to other staff related to system use, data requests, and basic reporting from the fleet management system.

6. Develop a working understanding of municipal fleet operations and funding structures, including equipment replacement planning and reserve funding practices.

7. Contribute to continuous process improvement by identifying opportunities to improve data workflows, documentation, and coordination between Public Works and Finance.

The pay cycle is bi-weekly. No other benefits compensations are provided except for worker's compensation coverage and sick leave. Employees must contribute 1.45% of their salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan under Federal Law.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Woodland is seeking a motivated, resourceful self-starter to join the Community Development Planning team in a dynamic fellowship role that bridges municipal planning and historic preservation. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in core planning functions while contributing meaningfully to the preservation and celebration of the City’s historic character.

In this role, the Fellow will serve as a key point of contact for residents, property owners, and community stakeholders seeking information on general planning inquiries, zoning standards, and land use regulations. The position provides practical exposure to municipal planning processes, including development review, interpretation of zoning codes, and customer service within a public-sector framework.

A central component of the fellowship will be leading a comprehensive revamp of the City’s historic preservation education and outreach efforts. This includes researching and developing accessible educational materials, enhancing digital resources, and expanding community awareness of preservation programs and incentives. The Fellow will gain experience working with state and federal historic preservation documentation requirements and processes, strengthening their understanding of regulatory compliance and cultural resource management.

The Ideal Candidate is an adaptable, community-focused emerging professional with a strong interest in municipal planning and historic preservation. Applicants should be a current student or recent graduate in Urban Planning, History, Public Administration, Architecture, or a closely related field. The successful candidate demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and the ability to clearly explain complex zoning, land use, or preservation concepts to residents, property owners, and other stakeholders in an accessible and professional manner.

This individual is comfortable conducting technical research and collecting data to inform planning initiatives, policy analysis, and outreach efforts. Familiarity with tools and concepts such as GIS mapping (ArcGIS or QGIS), zoning analysis, site plan review, and urban design principles is highly desirable. The candidate should be capable of synthesizing information into concise summaries, visual materials, or presentations that support decision-making and community understanding.

THE POSITION OBJECTIVES/GOALS

The primary goal of this fellowship is to provide hands-on experience in the daily operations of a municipal planning office, preparing participants for expanded career opportunities in urban planning, historic preservation, and community development. Key objectives include:

1. Public Engagement: Serve as a front-line resource at the Planning Counter, providing clear, professional guidance to residents, property owners, and developers on zoning, land use, and permit inquiries.
    
2. Inquiry Management: Respond to phone and email inquiries regarding City codes, permitting processes, and planning regulations, ensuring accurate and timely information.
    
3. Technical Research: Conduct site-specific research, data collection, and documentation to support historic preservation projects and planning initiatives.
    
4. Heritage Home Awards: Assist with the planning, nomination review, coordination, and promotion of the City’s annual Heritage Home Awards program.
    
5. Website Revamp: Audit, update, and redesign the Historic Preservation section of the City’s website to create a comprehensive, user-friendly educational hub for homeowners and the community.
    
6. Interactive Story Map: Develop an engaging Historic Resource Story Map using GIS tools, featuring photos, architectural descriptions, and cultural context to enhance public understanding of Woodland’s landmark sites.
    
7. Historical Resource Development: Create and curate downloadable resources—including preservation guidelines, tax credit information, and step-by-step educational content—to support property owners in restoring and maintaining historic properties.
