Position Duties

 

Salary Range for the Park Ranger Classification is: $44.61 - $54.22 Hourly | $92,798.16 - $112,781.76 Annually. PRNS is currently recruiting to fill multiple full-time benefited vacancies for Park Ranger and Part Time Benefited Park Ranger Positions.

DESCRIPTION:

The Department:

The Santa Clara Fire Department was established in 1854 when local residents formed the Columbia Hose Volunteer Fire Company. Today, the city has 9 fire stations (one more in design process) consisting of 8 engines, 2 trucks, 1 rescue/light unit, 1 hazardous materials unit, 1 ambulance and 2 command vehicles. The fire department is comprised of 175 personnel staffed across five divisions and serves a population of approximately 130,000 people spread over 18.4 square miles.  The Fire Administration Division provides management, organization, and support for the various divisions of the fire department actively engaged in the protection of life and property.  The Emergency Medical Services Division is responsible for training personnel to deliver pre-hospital emergency medical services to people who live, work and visit in Santa Clara.  The Community Risk Reduction Division is primarily responsible for fire safety education, fire cause determination, inspection of high hazard occupancies, and fire code enforcement. This division also maintains a vital role as technical consultant to the fire department, the City, and the business community, advising on site construction, process installation, and the safe use and handling of hazardous materials as outlined in federal, state, and local regulations. The Field Operations Division efficiently manages over 11,000 emergency responses annually.  The Training Division provides services to the Fire Department, other City departments, industry, and the community at large.

The Position:

Firefighter I is the entry level classification in the Firefighter series. An incumbent in this classification responds to medical emergencies, fire alarms, performs rescue services, and protects life and property endangered by fire. When qualified and assigned, Firefighter I's may be assigned to paramedic duties. Performs related duties as assigned.

License/Certifications:

• A valid National Registry or State of California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate or proof of course enrollment in a valid EMT program is required at time of application.  Upon appointment to the classification, a valid National Registry or State of California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate is required to be possessed and maintained as a condition of employment.
• A valid California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (CFFJAC) Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card issued within 6 months prior to the date of a conditional offer of employment
• Successful completion of a City of Santa Clara approved Fire Academy is required within 6 months of appointment
• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment. A valid California Class C driver's license with Firefighter endorsement is required within 24 months of appointment 
• All of the listed licenses and certifications must be maintained as a condition of continued employment in this classification for as long as they are required

Desirable Qualifications:

• Demonstrated proficiency in a second language, in accordance with the City's needs
• Military experience, journey-level status in the building construction trades, or other work experience relevant to the fire service
• Community service experience
• Completion of thirty (30) or more units of coursework in Fire Science/Technology at an accredited college
• An associate's or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university
• Possession of a valid California Paramedic (EMT-P) license (required prior to appointment to a Paramedic assignment)
• A valid California Class A or B commercial driver's license

Other Requirements:  

• Typically assigned to a 56-hour workweek (24-hour shifts); may be assigned to a 40-hour workweek as required
• May be required to work odd and unusual hours, including weekends and designated holidays and to be subject to call-back in the performance of job duties

Physical Requirements:

• At least 21 years of age

Overview:

The Senior Engineer (Electrical) is to provide specialized electrical engineering expertise, particularly related to low and medium voltage electrical distribution systems and low voltage motor control centers used in industrial facilities, including water treatment plants. This individual will serve as a subject-matter expert, support ongoing capital projects throughout all phases—planning, design, and construction, act as the Owner’s representative for electrical engineering, and manage consultants and professional services agreements. Their role includes troubleshooting complex electrical issues, assisting with design modifications, and managing capital improvement (electrical) projects, such as the Electrical Improvement Project at Water Treatment Plants and providing electrical engineering support for the Reliability Improvement Project (RWTP). The Senior Engineer (Electrical) will also support the Treatment Plant Projects Delivery Units ongoing efforts to enhance facility operations and ensure the successful delivery of vital infrastructure upgrades.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Manage complex, politically sensitive, and/or large treatment plant capital improvement projects through all phases, including planning and design; supervises multi-division teams and coordinates and collaborates with external agencies.
• Provides electrical and power engineering support for projects under the Treatment Plants Project Delivery Unit.

• Troubleshooting and repairing existing industrial electrical distribution (both hardware and software).

• Collaborating with project teams to ensure that projects in planning, design, and construction phases are abiding by industrial to electrical distribution standards.

Treatment Plants Project Delivery Unit (Position Code 1099) 

Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite.

The Policy Advisor for Public Safety is responsible for tracking and shaping policies related to law enforcement, emergency response services, probation, juvenile justice, and criminal justice reform. The Advisor works to ensure that public safety systems in District 1 are rehabilitative, transparent, equitable, and aligned with community needs. This position reports to the Director of Policy. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Monitor board items and legislative actions related to the Sheriff’s Department, Probation, District Attorney, and emergency response.
• Draft board letters, amendments, talking points, and constituent updates.
• Draft talking points and speeches that communicate the elected’s policies, priorities, and vision to constituents, stakeholders, and community leaders
• Serve as liaison with community safety coalitions, violence prevention groups, and first responders.
• Provide support to the elected at community events coordinating scheduling, logistics, and constituent engagement.
• Conduct research and communicate policy ideas in support of the elected’s legislative agenda.
• Develop strategies that promote rehabilitation, accountability, de-escalation, diversion programs and reduce recidivism. 
• Track jail conditions, behavioral health service integration, and reentry programs.

The Policy Advisor for Land Use and Environment Group (LUEG) leads the Supervisor’s agenda in areas including the Tijuana River sewage crisis, environmental policy, transportation, housing, climate adaptation, agriculture, and regional planning. This person plays a key role in the Supervisor’s priorities for equitable development and environmental justice. This position reports to the Director of Policy.

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyze and advise on policies related to planning, permitting, housing sustainability, and transportation.
• Draft policy proposals, board letters, environmental reviews, and public updates.
• Draft talking points and speeches that communicate the elected’s policies, priorities, and vision to constituents, stakeholders, and community leaders.
• Monitor the County’s Climate Action Plan, general plan amendments, and mobility investments.
• Conduct research and communicate policy ideas in support of the elected’s legislative agenda.

The Policy Advisor for Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) leads on all matters related to the County’s social services, public health, behavioral health, and child and senior welfare programs. This individual tracks policies, advocates for equitable investments in District 1, and helps design board actions that enhance public health, general welfare, and access to medical care and social support systems. This position reports to the Director of Policy.

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyze HHSA initiatives and county programs related to the safety net, public health, behavioral health, homeless service, housing development, child welfare, and services for seniors and people with disabilities.
• Draft policy memos, board letters, and recommendations to address systemic inequities.
• Draft talking points and speeches that communicate the elected’s policies, priorities, and vision to constituents, stakeholders, and community leaders.
• Serve as a liaison to County departments, community-based organizations, and health justice advocates.
• Conduct research and communicate policy ideas in support of the elected’s legislative agenda.
• Coordinate with the Director of Community Engagement to elevate on-the-ground feedback.

The Multimedia Designer is responsible for shaping the visual identity and public-facing content of the Office of Supervisor Paloma Aguirre. This creative role includes capturing and producing photos and videos, managing graphic design, and overseeing the visual design and functionality of the Supervisor’s website and digital communications. The ideal candidate has strong creative and technical skills and is committed to community-centered storytelling. This position reports to the Director of Communications. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan, capture, and edit photography and video content for events, announcements, and social media.
• Design flyers, infographics, reports, and branded materials for public distribution.

The Digital Media Manager ensures consistent voice, tone, and message alignment across all platforms and works closely with the Media Content Producer to deliver cohesive digital storytelling. About the Position: The Land Stewardship & Trails Department is Midpen’s largest department with over 70 employees during construction season. As such, this position requires constant communication and alignment with team members and stakeholders.  This position reports to the Land Stewardship & Trails Manager and has direct supervision over one Administrative Assistant. This position plays a key role in supporting the Land Stewardship & Trails Manager with strategic initiatives and day-to-day operations.  The ideal candidate has solid public sector finance, budget, purchasing, project tracking, and asset management experience; possesses excellent judgment, curiosity, and proactive problem solving and time management skills; and can successfully manage many priorities at once while accomplishing professional-level administrative and program work. Work Environment: This full-time position is part of the Land Stewardship & Trails Department at Midpen’s Administrative Office in Los Altos, California. Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work schedule for this position following successful onboarding. A minimum of three days on-site in the office is required per week. This is primarily a sedentary office classification.  Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
