San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS), Child and Youth Services https://www.smchealth.org/bhrs, provides a broad spectrum of Trauma Informed mental health and substance use services for children, youth, and families focusing on prevention, early intervention and treatment of youth diagnosed as Severely Emotionally Disturbed (SED) and/or substance use disorders. We provide services through specialty teams outpatient clinics, in schools, and field-based teams in Daly City, San Mateo, Half Moon Bay, Redwood City and East Palo Alto. BHRS also provides services through a network of community agencies and independent providers who offer outpatient and wraparound services. BHRS supports treatment of the whole person to achieve wellness and recovery, and to promote the health and well-being of the people, families and communities we serve. Additionally for Residential Youth Treatment at Canyon Oaks Youth Center, Community Care Licensing requires providers working in this facility to maintain 40 hours of annual training related to the field, most of which are provided by the facility. Clinicians will also need to be trained in Professional Assault Crisis Training model (Pro-Act) upon hire.

The ideal candidates will possess:

• Strong assessment, diagnostic and evaluation skills Knowledge of principles, techniques and trends in counseling, psychotherapy, clinical case management, crisis management and various treatment modalities
• Experience providing treatment for youth with Severe Emotional Disturbance (SED).
• Experience delivering services to youth who have mental health and substance use conditions.
• Experience delivering services in specialty areas for infants, children, youth, adolescents and/or transitional age youth.
• Excellent documentation skills: progress notes, assessments, client care plans, etc.
• Demonstrated expertise, skill and interest in working with a broad range of clients of diverse cultures and backgrounds, such as Latino, Pacific Islander, African American, and LGBTQ, and an ability to provide culturally appropriate and proficient services.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with families, co-workers, other professionals, collaborative partners and the public.
• Experience using electronic health/medical record systems (e.g. AVATAR, SOARIAN).
• Fluency in Spanish and experience providing clinical services using bilingual skills.

Additionally, for Residential Youth Treatment

• Knowledge of the principles of Trauma Informed Care Experience working in a multi-disciplinary setting.

• Experience working in a facility juvenile hall setting.
• Experience providing case management services for youth detained in a juvenile hall setting.

Example of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform initial diagnostic evaluation noting behavioral symptoms.
• Determine and develop appropriate treatment plans for all clients in the caseload.
• Conduct individual, group and family counseling/therapy sessions for clients.
• Develop individual and group treatment plans utilizing a variety of psychotherapeutic, psychosocial and psycho educational modalities.
• Conduct suicide/risk assessments & crisis intervention.
• Conduct home visits and/or field-based services (as relevant to program needs.)
• Awareness of community resources in order to provide linkage to additional supportive services.
• Conduct treatment groups in schools and other community settings with emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children.
• Work as a part of a multidisciplinary team. Utilize Trauma Informed Care and other Evidence-based practices.

Licensure/Certification

LARPD is seeking a summer intern to support the Community Outreach Department.  Applicants should have the equivalent of one year of college credits completed toward a degree.  Candidates interested in learning about communications, content creation, and social media with a government agency will be given preference.  Interested candidates should complete an application online. Community Outreach Communications Project Plan 

The Community Outreach team is seeking a summer intern for a 10–12-week assignment.  The goal of the internship is to gain valuable experience capturing and creating content, assisting throughout the district.  

Key duties 

• Visit Summer Programs to Capture Video and Photo content 

• Draft Program Highlight and Promotional Social Posts 

• Edit Community Facing District-Wide Videos 

• Assist with District-Wide Communications including Email Newsletters, Website, and social media. 

Key deliverables will be: 

• Create two to three 30 second videos highlighting LARPD’s impact on the community. 

• Update District Parks and Facilities Guide for Website  

• Capturing photo/video content from summer programs 

What learning will occur for the intern? 

• Learn to effectively communicate the LARPD brand identity across various channels, including social media, website, and content creation, by maintaining consistency in voice, tone, and messaging. 

• Gain hands-on experience in managing social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, Instagram) by creating engaging content, scheduling posts, monitoring audience engagement, and analyzing performance metrics to optimize strategies. 

• Learn website management by assisting with content updates, uploading new information, ensuring website functionality, and implementing best practices to enhance online visibility and user experience. 

• Develop skills in content creation, including writing engaging copy, designing visuals, and creating multimedia content such as videos, graphics, and infographics to convey key messages and engage the target audience. 

• Gain proficiency in video editing software to assist in creating and editing promotional videos, event highlights, and educational content for various communication channels, while adhering to branding guidelines and storytelling principles. 

Timing 

June-August 9th.  Interns may start and end later but need to be present for the core Sessions slated for the entire month of June, July and through August 9th.  

Work hours will be Monday – Friday, 25-30 hours per week during the 12 weeks of employment.  The pay rate will be $20 per hour.  All interns will be required to successfully complete a Department of Justice fingerprint clearance and undergo a TB test as a condition of employment.

TEMPORARY POTTERY INSTRUCTOR

 (Recreation Instructor 2 - Job Code 9523)

Hours: 3 to 9 hours/week. Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).  

Recreation Services Division is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in employment as a pottery instructor for adults. Under general supervision of the Recreation Services Coordinator, pottery instructors are responsible for teaching pottery techniques through lecture and demonstrations.  Classes are run year-round and meet once a week for 3 hours. Class sessions are six weeks long and include a week break for cleaning and restocking after two consecutive class sessions (every 12 weeks).

• Teach pottery/ceramic classes by leading and demonstrating techniques associated with the subject matter
• Maintain a safe, friendly and inclusive class environment for all participants
• Adjust class as appropriate and as needed to meet the various skill levels of participants
• Develop curriculum for each class meeting
• Knowledge of glazing and firing techniques
• Develop projects to keep class interesting for both regular and repeat participants
• Maintain documentation as required
• Report to work in a timely manner and appropriately prepared

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push, pull objects weighing up to 25 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.  

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Graduation from high school or tested equivalent; AND
• A minimum of 2 years as a professional potter or ceramicist; AND
• A minimum of 1 year of experience teaching *additional years of professional studio work may be substituted for teaching experience. 

Knowledge of:
Pottery and ceramic techniques including centering, wheel throwing, slab rolling, wedging, hand-building, low- and high-firing and glazing is required. Experience with alternative firing techniques is desirable, but not required.
ABILITY TO

• Work autonomously and as part of a team
• Develop new and interesting class curriculum
• Work with students of all levels and skill sets simultaneously

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• A degree(s) in pottery/ceramics 
• Practicing ceramicist/potter with exhibition and studio experience
• Experience with alternative firing techniques

The positions are responsible for a variety of ongoing responsibilities including, but not limited to:

• Provide individual, family, group therapy for adults, children, adolescents, and youth with mental illness and their families; facilitate child and family team meetings;

• Within scope of authority, assesses, diagnoses, and treats a variety of clients with mental health disorders; collaborates with clients and creates individualized treatments plans according to client’s needs and circumstances.

• Provide home, field, office and/or school services; complete all DMH documentation; participate in the on-call rotation;

• Perform routine and emergency intake evaluations according to Authority procedure; completes appropriate forms and documents relating to the intake process; and prepares medical and demographic case history for use in diagnosis.

• Assists clients and family members in understanding behavioral health diagnosis, contributing factors/causes, effects, prognosis, rehabilitation, and treatment.

• Works with clients to address stressors and barriers to treatment and/or social functioning; identifies and focuses on client strengths and personal resources to effectively engage and treat client.
