This recruitment is for an Electrician based at the City’s Water Reclamation Plant, with work focused on the plant’s industrial systems (please note: prior experience in solely residential electrical work is not qualifying.

 

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, the Electrician performs a wide variety of skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical infrastructure systems and equipment in support of the divisions of the Public Works Department. 

Examples of duties include:

  • Performs skilled electrical and electronic installation, repair, service and maintenance work on a variety of electrical installations, systems, pumps, meters, and other equipment in City facilities, which include working on and around high voltage, 480-voltage, and multi-phase motors
  • Inspects and repairs motor control circuits and variable frequency drive systems
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs electrical switch gear, transformers, underground transmission power
  • conductors, relays, motors, pumps, generators and a variety of other types of electro-mechanical equipment
  • Reads and interprets electrical and mechanical drawings and specifications
  • Prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations and makes recommendations regarding the purchase of supplies and equipment

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and characteristics:

  • Knowledge of Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety, California Electrical Code, and the National Electric Code
  • Follow written and oral directions and handle a variety of tasks with minimum supervision
  • Keep and maintain accurate work logs, detailed records, and related operational and maintenance data
  • Ability to learn the systems, procedures, practices, and operations of the department and have a proactive approach to continually improve all assigned areas of responsibility

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:   Five years of journey level experience in the repair, maintenance, and installation of electrical and electronic systems equivalent to those used in the City of Livermore. 

Please note: prior experience in solely residential electrical work is not qualifying.

EducationEquivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by specialized training or college coursework related to the assigned section.

License: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record as determined by the City.  Requires the possession of a valid California Class A license with the appropriate endorsements prior to the completion of the probationary period.

CertificationsIncumbents must meet the minimum standards as established by the California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Apprentice Standards, for certification that is relevant to this job classification.

Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) RequirementIncumbents in this job classification may be called upon, at any time, to perform safety sensitive functions, and therefore, may be subject to the Federal Highway Administration D.O.T. regulations and the City’s policy concerning drug and alcohol testing as a continuing condition of employment with the City of Livermore.

Other Requirements: Willingness and ability to work scheduled and emergency overtime and be available on call, as needed; work under adverse conditions, such as in confined and awkward spaces, work in potentially hazardous areas; work outdoors in all weather conditions; wear and use appropriate safety clothing and equipment; travel and attend conferences, meetings, seminars, and courses during work and non-work hours.

Special Requirements: Essential duties require the mental and/or physical ability to read fine print and fine details with no color deficiencies; drive a motor vehicle; converse on the telephone and in person and be clearly understood; hear and detect noises in electronic equipment; operate equipment necessary for this position including lift-equipment; manipulate small parts and components; bend, stretch, reach, stoop, and climb ladders, towers, and poles for prolonged periods of time and/or numerous times each day; and safely lift and maneuver equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
