ABOUT THE POSITION

The Recreation Leader I position is responsible for providing high-level programs and services through the Parks and Recreation Department, which provide concrete, positive experiences for youth and promote qualities essential to raising successful young people. Recreation Leaders (I) are responsible for implementing the curriculum for the Moraga Day Camp program, which offers youth daily activities, including arts and crafts, games, songs, field trips, and special events. This position may also work additional seasonal events for the Parks and Recreation Department throughout the year.

Saturday, May 16, 2026, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm in San Ramon (Regional Summer Training)
Monday, June 1, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Tuesday, June 2, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Wednesday, June 3, Time CPR / First Aid, 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Thursday, June 4, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Friday, June 5, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Program Dates:

June 8 - August 07, 2026. Must be available for 7 of the 9 weeks. (No Vacations will be approved from June 1 through June 12th.
Mandatory Workday – Camp Cleanup – August 8th & 9th. Times TBD.

EXAMPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan and lead arts, crafts, songs, and games according to the week's theme.
Serve as a mentor and role model to campers.
Work as part of a team of leaders.
Safely and appropriately supervise campers.
Use positive discipline and communicate effectively with parents/guardians.
Perform duties within OSHA health and safety standards, including Covid-19 protocols and cleaning procedures.

Ideal Candidate

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with youth in a recreation setting.

The minimum age for employment is 15 years. Candidates under the age of 18 will require a work permit prior to May 1, 2026
Energetic, self-motivated, creative, and organized.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Mobility to work in a standard, active camp setting.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:

No Work Experience Required.

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities qualifies. Generally, this will require:
Desirable Experience: One (1) year of work experience, preferably in a customer service-oriented environment, youth recreational activities, or in babysitting with references.

License or Certificates:

Current Youth/Adult CPR/First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain a certificate. (Training is Provided if you do not have a current CPR/First Aid Certificate

Education:

Enrolled in or graduated from high school.

8. Summer camp programs run from June 8, 2026, to August 7, 2026. Shifts will not exceed 8 hours/day and will be scheduled between 7:30 AM and 6:30 PM. Staff meetings are from 6:30 – 7:30 pm on Monday Evenings. Most shifts will be 3.5 - 6 hours. Please indicate any dates or times you are unavailable to work during these listed dates and times. (Not being available doesn’t necessarily disqualify you from employment.)

9. All staff must commit to at least seven full weeks of work. Which week(s) during the summer camp will you need two or more days off? Requests for time off after the application process are subject to staff availability. Note that time off requests made later may not be accommodated. Back-to-back (two consecutive) weeks of vacation is not desirable.

12. The pay scale for the Recreation Leader I position is $16.90-$20.54 per hour. I understand that if offered a position, it will be within the adopted pay scale based on my skills and prior experience.

13. I understand that hours may vary from week to week; however, the Town will strive to give each employee, on average, at least 15 hours a week and not exceed 40 hours per week.

14. I have read and understand the following: Staff Training is mandatory for all summer camp staff. Hiring preference may be given to applicants with greater availability/flexibility during the summer program season. Because of program staffing needs, I may take no more than one consecutive camp week to be considered for a summer camp staff position. Employment offers do not guarantee hours each week or a set/consistent schedule. If offered employment, I will be assigned to camp according to the program's needs, and my assignment may change during the summer. If offered employment, I may be assigned to work shifts in the extended care program, which may result in split-shift scheduling. If offered employment, my performance will be evaluated during the summer, and this evaluation will be one criterion used to determine whether I will be invited to continue as a Town of Moraga staff member.
