Description
The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking enthusiastic individuals who are not only passionate about working with the public but also possess a genuine interest in coaching and making a positive impact as role models in their lives. This role involves teaching fundamentals of various sports, coaching, refereeing and scorekeeping for our youth and adult sports programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Coach and referee youth & adult sports programs to maintain standards of play and ensure the safety of all participants.
Teach and explain the rules and regulations of basketball, volleyball, baseball, etc.
Confer with other coaches/referees, players and facility managers in order to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems.
Score keep or referee games as assigned.
Maintain the gymnasium area including equipment and facility.
Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned.
Ideal Candidate
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
- City application (Only accepted via Calopps)
- Must be at least 15 years of age
- Prior experience working with school-age children is preferred but not required.
- Must successfully pass a TB test before an appointment, which is at your own cost.
- Required to submit to a City Fingerprint Background Investigation if over the age of 18.
- Certified in CPR/AED within 6 months of hire, the city offers classes for new employees.
- Work Permit Documentation may be required

Benefits
This is a non-benefited, part-time, seasonal, temporary position. Temporary employees will only work up to 1,000 hours per year.
PART-TIME BENEFITS:
- Sick Leave: After 90 days from an employee’s hire date, the employee is entitled to 5 days (40 hours) sick leave per fiscal year. Sick hours do not roll over to the next year and therefore must be utilized or forfeited annually.
RETIREMENT:
- Temporary employees will be required to contribute to a Nationwide Deferred Compensation Plan.
TEMPORARY EMPLOYEE STATUS:
- Employment may be terminated with or without cause or notice, at any time, at the will of the City of Newark, in its sole discretion.
