Description
The City of Dixon is currently hiring for one (1) full-time position of Senior Maintenance Worker in the Parks Division of the Public Works Department. This recruitment process will also be used to create an eligibility list for future vacancies in other divisions, including streets, buildings, or streetscapes. Candidates who apply will be considered for the current opening in Parks, and may also be contacted for future openings in other divisions as they arise.
This position organizes, assigns and reviews the work of assigned personnel engaged in semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the maintenance and repair of City’s parks, buildings, streets, storm drain ponds and related facilities; performs duties requiring specialized knowledge; and provides support to assigned supervisor.
PARKS
Performs semi-skilled and skilled repair, maintenance and landscaping tasks involving City parks including irrigation system installation and maintenance; conducts playground equipment inspection, maintenance and installation; performs graffiti removal; maintains swimming pools; performs pesticide, herbicide and fungicide spraying; tree and bush trimming to avoid pedestrian traffic, obstruction of traffic signs and line-of-sight; cleans and maintains park facilities, buildings and associated facilities; oversees and coordinates the work of contractors as it relates to park and streetscapes maintenance and construction. Positions operate equipment which include, but are not limited to, mowers, spray rigs, electric, air and hydraulic powered hand tools, hedge-shears, blowers, weed eaters, backhoes, trenchers, lift buckets, scrapers, chain saws, chippers and other heavy equipment.
Exam Process: A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related education, training and experience may be invited to participate in the subsequent phase of the evaluation process which may include interviews, written exercises, or simulated work problems. Note: Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the selection process.
Employment Processing: Those selected are subject to a 12-month probation period and may be subject to pre-employment drug testing and fingerprinting. In accordance with Federal law, an employee must provide proof of identity and legal right to work in the United States.

Ideal Candidate
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of principles and practices of technical and functional supervision and training; advanced uses of general construction and maintenance tools, materials and equipment related to assignment; safe working practices; basic computer skills related to data entry/retrieval; basic principles of record keeping; operation of a variety of power and construction equipment including, but not limited to, trucks, loaders and related equipment; tools, methods and materials used in street, streetscapes, park, and building repair and maintenance; and regulations regarding pesticide/herbicide/fungicide use and water conservation.
Ability to provide technical and functional supervision over assigned staff; effectively train staff; perform the most complex tasks associated with the repair and maintenance of public works facilities; perform heavy manual labor; understand and carry out oral and written directions; maintain a safe working environment; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; maintain records; safely operate hand and construction tools and equipment.
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:
Two years of responsible journey level experience equivalent to a Maintenance Worker II, Aquatics Maintenance Worker II or Utilities Maintenance Worker II within the City of Dixon.
Other Requirements:
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License within 30 days of appointment and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of assignment, a Class B or A Driver’s License with a tank and air brake endorsements.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months of assignment, a valid California Pesticide Applicator’s Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Benefits
Full-Time Permanent Employees in this classification are represented by Public Employees Union, Local One. This contract is currently in negotiations, salary and benefits may be subject to change.
BENEFIT INFORMATION
Retirement: CalPERS Retirement System (2% @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members; Classic members shall contribute five percent (5%) towards the employer share of PERS contributions). MOU INTERPRETATION OF CALPERS TIERS The City does not participate in social security.
Medical: CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs. City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance. Maximum Family Medical Benefit Allowance (2025): $2,025 per month.
Bilingual Pay: $100 per month upon certification.
