Description
The City of Newark is seeking a Public Safety Clerk to join our Police Department.
Under the direction of the Police Records Supervisor, Public Safety Clerks perform a variety of administrative and data-driven tasks to support the processing and maintenance of Police Department reports, records, and files. Responsibilities include:
Entering high volumes of data from police reports.
Preparing statements, letters, petitions, and civil or criminal complaints using word processing software.
Processing, indexing, and maintaining confidential law enforcement documents.
Assisting the public in person and electronically by responding to requests for information.
Collecting and invoicing fees for various services.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education:
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent,
Experience:
- Two (2) years of administrative experience preparing, compiling, and distributing records, files, reports, or statistical information.
- Police records experience is desirable.
License and Certificate:
- Possession of a valid driver license and a satisfactory driving record throughout employment.
- California POST Records Course and California POST Public Records Act Course are desirable.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has knowledge of police records, its classification, storage and has knowledge of specialized data systems used by law enforcement. They have a track record of exceptional customer service, and possess a positive mindset to meet the Police Department's growing needs. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and has upstanding judgement and ethics are a given. We are looking for someone with strong record keeping experience, knowledge of or experience with dealing with law enforcement personnel is a strength. Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to maintain positive relationships with other City Departments and personnel are a must.
Familiarity with California Law Enforcement and Telecommunications System (CLETS) and other National Law Enforcement and Telecommunications Systems, and multi-tasking is key to success in this position. An organized, and detail-oriented communicator would excel in this role.

The City offers an outstanding benefits package that includes:
- Health Insurance: The City contributes the following amounts to employee health and welfare benefits:
- Employee only: $932
- Employee + 1 dependent: $1,862
- Employee + 2 or more dependents: $2,460
If employee declines any or part of the City's cafeteria plan, employee may receive up to $450 cash-in-lieu per month. Any cash out will be paid to the employee in taxable compensation. Proof of medical insurance is required.
- Retirement: CalPERS 2.5% @ 55 for Classic members or 2.0% @ 62 for New PEPRA members. The City does not participate in Social Security. The City participates in Medicare.
- Vacation Accrual: 6.667 to 16.667 hours per month depending upon years of service.
- Sick Leave: Up to 8 hours per month.
- Holidays: 13 paid holidays per year.
- Deferred Compensation: Voluntary participation.
- Life Insurance: City-paid $50,000 policy.
- Educational Reimbursement: Up to $1,500 per fiscal year
- Long-term and Short-term Disability: Voluntary participation.
- Uniform Allowance: $100/month (upon completion of 12 months of continuous employment
- Wellness: On-site bicycle lockers, and employee wellness activities such as workshops, fitness challenges, and informal meetings.
- Health & Fitness: Employees and eligible family members have free use of the gym, exercise equipment and aquatic facilities at the Silliman Activity and Family Aquatic Center, as well as resident rates for classes and rentals

The selection process will begin with a review of applications to determine those applicants who are best qualified. The best qualified candidates will be invited to continue to the oral board phase to be held on the week of October 20th, 2025.
Those passing the examination process will be placed on an eligibility list for Public Safety Clerk classification. Names of all eligible candidates will be forwarded to the Police Department to fill potential vacancies arising in the future.
Prior to receiving a conditional offer of employment, the selected finalist(s) will be required to successfully complete fingerprinting and a background investigation, which will include a polygraph examination and which shall adhere to the P.O.S.T. background investigation dimensions. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be required to complete a psychological evaluation and a City paid pre-employment medical examination to include testing for the presence of drugs and alcohol. Applicants must be successful in all phases of the selection process to be considered for this position.
