Description

The City of Dixon is excited to announce an exciting career opportunity!  We are currently recruiting for the position of Public Works Superintendent in our dynamic Public Works Department. This key leadership role plays a vital part in shaping the heart of our community.  This position is will be is is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and supervising a wide range of Public Works Operations — including the operation and maintenance of parks, public buildings, streets, streetscapes, storm drains, and municipal garage facilities.

This is a mid-management classification with broad responsibility for overseeing Public Works Operations. The Superintendent is entrusted with a variety of complex, high-level managerial and supervisory duties and receives administrative direction from the Public Works Director. The role also involves both direct and indirect supervision of Public Works Operations personnel.

Exam Process: A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related education, training and experience may be invited to participate in a written exam and/or an interview process (weighted 100%). The most qualified candidates from this process will be placed on an employment eligibility list. Note: the examination process may be changed as deemed necessary.

Employment Processing: Those selected will be subject to pre-employment drug testing, physical evaluation and fingerprinting. In accordance with Federal law, an employee must provide proof of identity and legal right to work in the United States.

Ideal Candidate

Knowledge & Abilities:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of the operation and maintenance of public facilities including parks and buildings, streets, streetscapes, storm drains, and municipal garage; of the principles and practices of leadership, motivation, team building and conflict resolution; of pertinent local, State, and Federal rules, regulations and laws; of the principles and practices of supervision, training, and personnel management; of the principles and practices of budget preparation and administration; of modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment and uses; and of the principles and practices of work safety relevant to occupational hazards; maintenance techniques, traffic control and construction methods.

Ability to organize and direct operations of the City's Public Works Operations; to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations to support goals; to gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion; to interpret and apply City and Public Works Operations policies, procedures, rules and regulations; to prepare and administer budgets; to supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in engineering, business or public administration, or related field.

Possession of an Associate's degree in supervision, and management, construction management, or a related field is desired.

Experience:

Five years of increasingly responsible experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of Public Works facilities including at least two years of supervisory experience.

Other Requirements:

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.

May require the ability to obtain a Class B or A Driver's License, as designated by management.

May require possession of a valid California Pesticide Applicator's Certificate.

Benefits

Full-Time Permanent Employees in this classification are represented by Dixon Mid-Manager’s and Supervisor’s Association (DMSA). - this MOU is currently under negotiations, salary & some benefits may change

CalPERS TIER DEFINITIONS MOU INTERPRETATION OF CALPERS TIERS

CalPERS Annuitants will be limited to only 960 hours in a fiscal year and this position is full-time.

Retirement: CalPERS Retirement System (2% @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members). The City does not participate in social security.

Medical: CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs.  City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance.  Maximum Family Medical Benefit Allowance (2025): $2,025 per month.

Bilingual Pay:  $125 per month upon certification.

Standby Pay: $60/weekday evening; $150/weekend day; $150/holidays
