Description

Join the City of Simi Valley as a Wastewater Collection Systems Technician Trainee/I/II and help maintain the essential infrastructure that keeps our community running. This hands‑on role offers the opportunity to learn system maintenance, operate specialized equipment, and support daily field operations while building a clear path for advancement through the Technician series.                                        POSITION DETAILS:

  • Salary range: 
    • Wastewater Collection Systems Trainee: $22.23 to $28.33 hourly 
    • Wastewater Collection Systems Technician I: $24.45 - $31.18 hourly
    • Wastewater Collection Systems Technician II: $26.90 - $34.28 hourly
      • 3% Cost of Living adjustment increase effective 7/13/26
        • Generally, salary placement is at the beginning of the salary range.
        • Advanced placement may be granted depending on related education and experience.
  • Excellent Benefits package
  • Full-time regular position
  • 9/80 work schedule with alternating Monday or Friday off
  • May require occasional work on weekends, evenings, and holidays.

                           MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

                                          Wastewater Collection Systems Technician Trainee:

Education/Training:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized training in water/wastewater collection system maintenance and repair or a related field is desirable.

Experience:

  • No experience is required.

License or Certificate:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class A or B driver license within one year of hire.

                                                      Wastewater Collection Systems Technician I/II

Education/Training:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized training in water/wastewater collection system maintenance and repair or a related field is desirable.

Experience:

  • Six months of construction, maintenance or related experience.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing water/wastewater collection systems and equipment is desirable.

License or Certificate:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class A or B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement within one year of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate, valid first aid, C.P.R. and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) certificates.

Wastewater Collection System Technician I: Possession of Grade I Collection System Maintenance Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA).

Wastewater Collection System Technician II: Possession of Grade II Collection System Maintenance Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA).

                                   IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Strong willingness to learn and the ability to quickly pick up new technical skills, tools, and equipment used in wastewater system maintenance.
  • Reliability and a solid work ethic, including the ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in outdoor, confined‑space, and sometimes challenging environments.
  • Commitment to safety, following established procedures, traffic control practices, and proper handling of hazardous materials.
  • Team‑oriented mindset with the ability to communicate clearly, follow direction, and work collaboratively with crew members and other City staff.
  • Attention to detail in maintaining accurate records, reading maps and blueprints, and performing routine inspections.
  • Customer service awareness, responding professionally to public inquiries and representing the City with courtesy and professionalism.
  • Flexibility and dependability, including the ability to work nights, weekends, stand‑by shifts, and respond to emergency call‑outs when needed.
