Description

The City of Dixon Fire Department is recruiting to fill one vacancy in the Fire Department and to establish an eligibility list for future needs.

The Dixon Fire Department offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for qualified applicants pursuing a career in fire safety.  The position performs fire prevention activities to save lives and property; responds to hazardous material incidents; responds to all fire alarms with designated company; prepares and operates the necessary equipment at the scene of the fire such as a hose, ladders, chemicals, bars, hooks, etc.; administers first aid to injured patrons; performs other acts required of a Firefighter at the scene of an emergency; carries out all duties assigned by Superior Officers.  Work involves irregular hours during the day and evenings, and on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

To be considered eligible for this hiring and eligibility list, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Pass the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Entry Level Firefighter Written Exam and be placed on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List.
  • Possess a current, valid Cal-JAC CPAT Card issued within the last 12 months from date of application submission.
  • Possess a valid Firefighter I Academy certificate or California State Fire Marshal Firefighter 1 Certificate.
  • Submit all licenses, certificates, and other requirements listed under the "Ideal Candidate" section to FCTC.

Ideal Candidate

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of paramedic-level emergency medical care; applicable state and local laws, codes, regulations, and policies pertaining to paramedic-level emergency medical care; elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics; fire suppression and rescue equipment, tools and devices, and their proper use and maintenance requirements; of modern fire prevention and fire suppression methods, principles, practices and procedures; of work hazards and safety precautions associated with the work; and of first aid and CPR.

Ability to learn the geography of the local area including the location of hydrants, mains, and major fire hazards; to understand and act in accordance with departmental policies and rules; to demonstrate a high degree of mechanical aptitude as required in the operation and maintenance of firefighting and rescue equipment; to learn first aid principles and apply them, to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression. Ability to keep simple records and prepare reports, to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education/Experience:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. Related college level training is desirable.

Experience for Entry-Level/Non-Lateral Applicants: Some work experience performing firefighting and/or paramedic services is desirable. Successful completion of an eighteen-month probation period as a Dixon Volunteer Firefighter is highly desirable.

Experience for Lateral Applicants: One year of Full-Time paid experience or completion of probation with your current agency.

Licenses, Certificates and/or Other Requirements:

Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

Possession of a current, valid Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic license meeting the requirements of the California Emergency Medical Services Authority.

Ability to possess California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Certificate within six (6) months of initial hire.

Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association.

Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) OR Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP).

Certification in Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) OR Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) OR International Trauma Life Support (ITLS).

Must possess Solano County Paramedic Accreditation by date of appointment.

A satisfactory driving record is a condition of initial and continued employment.

Within fifteen (15) months of employment, and as a condition for passing probation, incumbents must obtain Firefighter II Certification.

A Firefighter Class C Endorsement is desired but not required.

Benefits

This position is covered by the Dixon Professional Firefighters Association (DPFA) 

CalPERS TIER DEFINITIONS MOU INTERPRETATION OF CALPERS TIERS

CalPERS Annuitants will be limited to only 960 hours in a fiscal year and this position is full-time.

Future Salary COLAs:        

July 2026 - 3%

Retirement:

CalPERS Retirement System (3 % @ 55 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2.7% @ 57 formula for new CalPERS members).  The City does not participate in social security.

Medical:                                

CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs.  City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance.  Maximum Family Medical Benefit Allowance (2025): $2,025 per month.

Probationary Period:                      

The initial probationary period shall be eighteen (18) months, but the Fire Chief has the ability to shorten the probationary period to twelve (12) months upon satisfactory performance evaluations.

Bilingual Pay:                      

$100 per month upon certification.

Education Incentive:

  • Fire Technology or Fire Science Certificate - $60/month
  • AA/AS degree in Fire Science - $120/month
  • BA/BS degree - $180/month
  • "Fire Officer" certificate - $120/month
  • "Chief Fire Officer, Fire Mechanic, Fire Instructor, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, or Apparatus Driver/Operator" certificate - $120/month (If more than one certificate is achieved under this section, employee shall only receive the mas of $120/month)

Max educational incentive shall be $420/month.

Physical Fitness Incentive:

$250.00 per month upon certification.
