Description

The City of Dixon is excited to announce the recruitment for one (1) full-time, regular position of Water Operator I. This position performs a variety of maintenance, operations, and repair work on the City's water distribution system, including pumps, mains, chlorinators, meters, and other equipment. 

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Work is performed in a variety of different environments with exposure to varying weather conditions including high temperatures, rain, and wind. Work is performed with exposure to hazardous materials, smoke, gasses, and fumes; with exposure to hazards such as, moving machine parts and live electrical current; and exposure to loud and/or high frequency noise. Occasional performance of heavy manual labor; occasional standing or driving for long periods of time; use of a computer; occasional climbing, work at heights above 10 feet; working on ladders, bending, stooping, crawling, squatting, kneeling, twisting, and repetitive hand movement. Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Constant use of overall color vision. Frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Frequent contact with other staff, outside agencies and the general public; occasional working alone. Night, weekend, and holiday hours will be required on a rotating schedule for 24/7 standby and weekend/holiday rounds.

EXAM PROCESS: A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related education, training and experience will be invited to participate in a written exam (pass/fail) and candidates who pass the written exam will be invited for an interview. Note: The examination process may be change as deemed necessary.

EMPLOYMENT PROCESSING: Candidates selected for hire are subject to pre-employment drug testing, fingerprinting, and must successfully complete and pass a pre-employment medical examination, and in accordance with Federal law, are to provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States.  A 12-month probation period will be served.

Ideal Candidate

EXPERIENCE:

One (1) year experience relating to the operations and maintenance of a water distribution system, including the maintenance of pumps, motors, and water production equipment is highly desired.

OR

One (1) year experience performing repair and maintenance tasks related to water.

EDUCATION:

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.

Possession of a Water Distribution or Treatment certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board is highly desired.

Possession of or ability to obtain a Water Distribution System Operator Grade II certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board, Drinking Water Operator Certification Program within one (1) year of employment as a condition of continued employment in this classification.

Future Salary COLA: 3% in July

Retirement: CalPERS Retirement System (2% @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members; Classic members shall contribute five percent (5%) towards the employer share of PERS contributions).  The City does not participate in social security.

Medical: CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs.  City will contribute an amount up to 85% of the premium for the Kaiser (Region 1) health plan. 2026 Maximum Employer Medical Contribution for family will be $2,583.18.

Dental & Vision: 100% coverage

Bilingual Pay: $150 per month upon certification.
