This is a joint recruitment for North County Fire Authority.
Application Process for NCFA Firefighter (Lateral):

To be considered a complete application, qualified candidates must complete a City of Daly City, City of Brisbane, and City of Pacifca application. Applicants must also submit a copy of a proof of EMT/Paramedic Certificate. DEFINITION
Under general supervision to perform general duty firefighting and fire prevention activities; to respond to emergency calls; to operate and maintain firefighting apparatus and equipment; to assist and participate in fire training programs and fire station maintenance: and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification includes a variety of assignments in preventing, controlling and extinguishing fires, performing emergency medical care and rescue operations, public education activities, and maintenance operations. While time spent fighting fires constitutes a small fraction of the scheduled work time, incumbents must be able to meet such emergencies and the hazards which may involve considerable physical exertion, and potential risk to health and safety.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Responds to fire alarms with fire company; connects and lays hose lines; operates nozzles and applies fire streams on fire surfaces; carries and operates hand extinguishers; carries and uses ladders, ropes, axes and other equipment; enters burning structures to combat fires and remove occupants; lays salvage covers and protects exposures and performs salvage operations; responds to emergency rescue calls, administers appropriate emergency first aid to victims; conducts inspections of buildings and properties for compliance with safety codes; conducts public information/education programs for the public; attends and participates in fire department training programs, maintains required skills; inspects, and performs appropriate preventative maintenance on vehicles, apparatus, equipment and fire hydrants, assists in the maintenance of fire station and grounds; as assigned drives and operates fire apparatus; receives and transmits radio messages and prepares and completes forms and reports; and performs other tasks as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to: Learn firefighting techniques, principles and practices; learn the basic operation and mechanics of firefighting equipment, streets and locations and the locations of hydrants, mains, and major fire hazards; learn to operate apparatus and equipment in conformance with safety procedures; demonstrate physical endurance, agility, dexterity and strength necessary to perform required duties; understand and act in accordance with Fire Department and City Rules and Regulations, policies and procedures; to follow written and oral directions; perform in a calm and efficient manner under stress; analyze emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action; respond to orders from supervisors; perform cooperatively and effectively as a member of a team; interact positively and cooperate with coworkers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member. function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis. Must have graduated from the San Mateo County Recruit Academy or other firefighter I academy, and have served a minimum of one year as a regular, non-probationary firefighter.
Education:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent. (College level course work in fire science desirable).
License/Certification:
- Possession of a valid Commercial Class B California Driver's License OR a valid Class C California Driver's License with a Firefighter Endorsement, as currently provided by law.
- Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1) Certificate.
Age:
- Twenty-one (21) years of age for entrance.
Physical Requirements:
- Weight commensurate with height and build. Normal visual functions and visual acuity not less than 20/70 vision in each eye without corrections, and corrected to 20/20 in the better eye and not less than 20/30 in the lesser eye; normal hearing; freedom from color blindness.
Benefits
The City's comprehensive benefits package includes:
Holidays: All shift unit members shall receive compensation for thirteen (13) eight (8) hour periods per year at the hourly equivalent rate based on a forty (40) hour workweek, in lieu of holidays. Such compensation is incorporated into salary at the rate of six percent (6%) and paid bi-weekly.
Vacation: Rate of five (5) shifts per year during the first five (5) years; eight (8) shifts per year for six (6) through twelve (12) years; ten (10) shifts per year for thirteen (13) through fifteen (15) years; eleven (11) shifts per year for sixteen (16) through twenty four (24) years; twelve (12) shifts per year for twenty five (25) years of more years of service.
Sick Leave: Shift unit members shall earn sick leave credit at the rate of 5.53 hours for each two (2) weeks' service or a total of six (6) shifts per year.
Retirement: The City contracts with CalPERS to provide a retirement plan that utilizes the formula of 3% @ 55 for "Classic" members or 2.7% @ 57 for "PEPRA" members.
Insurance: The City will place one thousand two hundred dollars ($1,200) per month in a cafeteria plan for medical and/or vision insurance coverage for each employee and all eligible dependents.
Medical insurance is offered through CalPERS medical plans. Vision insurance is offered through VSP.
The City contributes toward a dental insurance plan for employee and all eligible dependents.
The City provides life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance in the amount equal to annual salary for each eligible unit member.
The City contributes nineteen dollars and fifty cents ($19.50) per month for each eligible unit member to CPF Long Term Disability Insurance.Special Instructions
