THE OPPORTUNITY
The City of Pacifica is a beautiful coastal community just south of San Francisco with an exciting opportunity. We are currently hiring for a Maintenance Worker I to fill one vacancy with our Streets Division Teams. Under general supervision, this position will perform semi-skilled maintenance and repairs of City streets, sanitary sewers, storm drains, park and recreation landscaped areas, and other related work.

BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance-related duties involving manual labor of facilities, parks, storm drains, streets, etc.
- Repair irrigation systems, tools, recreation, and maintenance equipment
- Operate various motorized equipment such as a tractor, gang mower, power mower, and other equipment
- Plants, waters, mows, prunes, sprays, and maintains hedges, lawns, trees, flowers and shrubs
- Maintains parks, restrooms, and common spaces.
Willing to assist in these areas:
- Participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, gutters, sewers, storm drains, catch basins, barricades, sidewalks, parks, landscaped areas, and recreation equipment and facilities;
- Pours and finishes concrete;
- Operates cleaning equipment;
- Cleans out catch-basins and other storm-related preventive maintenance and removes litter from parks and other facilities;
- Operates compressors and pneumatic tools;
- Operates and makes minor repairs and adjustments to heavy power-driven equipment;
- Constructs forms for and does cement work;
- Performs brick work and building construction and maintenance work;
- Builds retaining walls;
- Repairs irrigation systems, tools, recreation and maintenance equipment; drives a truck, tractor, gang mower, power mower, and other light motorized construction equipment; plants, waters, mows, prunes, sprays and maintains hedges, lawns, trees, flowers and shrubs;
- Applies, tamps and rakes asphalt and related street construction and maintenance tasks;
- Repairs and replaces sewer and storm drainage pipe
- Performs basic carpentry, painting, plumbing and pipe-fitting work;
- Performs excavations and shoring for CCTV and underground utilities
- Performs street traffic control and sign painting which may include inventory,
- Operates storm water pumps
- May assist in purchasing
- Uses computer plotting machine
- Fill potholes in roadway
- Removes sand from roadways
- Welds
- Mows and weeding lawns
- Plants and trims trees and bushes
- Drags and stripes athletic fields;
- Installs and maintains irrigation systems
- Applies herbicides.
- Opens, cleans and sanitizes restrooms
- Empties trash
- Performs other duties as required
Ideal Candidate
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Maintenance Worker I
- Common tools, materials and practices used in construction, gardening and maintenance work.
Skill/Ability to:
Maintenance Worker I
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled construction, gardening and repair tasks
- Operate trucks, motorized equipment and hand tools;
- Operate heavy motorized equipment and power tools;
- Follow written and oral instructions
Education and Training
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
Maintenance Worker I
Experience: One year of semi-skilled construction, groundskeeping or
maintenance experience.
Training: graduation from high school
Certificates
Maintenance Worker I
Possession of a California Water Environment Association Collections System Maintenance (CSM) Grade I certificate.
Licenses
Possession of a valid California driver’s license. May be required to qualify for and obtain a Class A or Class B driver’s license and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Transportation regulations.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Physical Skills: Requires strength, agility, and endurance. Requires heavy lifting (75 pounds); considerable bending and stooping. Must be able to sit, stand, walk (on uneven surfaces), kneel, crouch, bend, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, and climb; Requires sufficient dexterity to drive trucks and large vehicles. Must have vision sufficient to read printed materials, a computer screen, and to test equipment in varied field settings. Must have hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
Working Environment: Works in shop and field settings; considerable exposure to inclement weather, cold, heat, noise, outdoors, dust, dirt, vibration, chemicals, traffic, traffic hazards, confined workspace, mechanical hazards, electrical and explosive hazards.
May work protracted and irregular hours; take 24-hour call and stand-by; available for evening meetings; available for unusual hours in emergencies
Benefits
The City's comprehensive benefits package includes:
Holidays: Thirteen (13) days per year.
Vacation: From 11 to 27 days per year, depending on length of service.
Sick leave: Accrual is one day per month, with no limit on accrual.
Retirement: The City contracts with CalPERS to provide a retirement plan that utilizes the formula of 2.5% @ 55 for "Classic members" or 2% @ 62 for "PEPRA members." Classic Members contribute 8% employee contribution plus 2.5% employer cost share for a total contribution of 10.5%. PEPRA members pay 6.75% employee contribution plus 2.5% employer cost share for a total contribution of 9.25%.
Insurance: The City provides its employees with a medical insurance allowance that allows employees to purchase medical insurance through either Teamsters Union #856 Health and Welfare or CalPERS medical benefits plan. Some plans require employee contributions. Employees with proof of qualifying health insurance coverage through another group health plan may qualify for a "Health In-Lieu Payment" when declining city coverage.
The City contributes toward a dental insurance plan and vision plan for employee and all eligible dependents.
The City pays premiums for:
· Life insurance premium in the amount of $30,000.
· Long term disability insurance (to begin sixty days after onset of non-work-related illness or injury).
Training: The City will pay up to $2,000 per fiscal year toward the cost of books and tuition required as part of courses taken that are job-related.
Deferred Compensation: Employees may participate in a choice of three deferred compensation plans.
Union Membership: This position is represented by the Teamsters Local 856, Miscellaneous Unit.
