The Public Works Department is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services.  The Department is committed to high-quality service, partnering with the community, and providing an excellent environment in which to work. 

 

Position Duties  

The Department of Public Works is seeking to fill one (1) vacant Facility Repair Worker position within the Facilities Management Division. Under general supervision, this Facility Repair Worker will perform a wide variety of semi-skilled work in the repair of buildings and equipment at San José City Hall. 

Salary range for this classification is $77,355.20 - $94,036.80 annually. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.  

This Facility Repair Worker position will be stationed at San José City Hall. City Hall is an 18-story high-rise structure which adds maintenance and operational challenges. In addition to the typical duties of a Facility Repair Worker, the successful candidate will maintain the potable/reclaimed water systems, learn how to maintain pressure variances in the systems, operate and maintain a large water feature/fountain on site, and work in high locations utilizing a scissor-lift and ReachMaster® 138 ft. boom lift. City Hall houses the upper management of most of the city departments, as well as the Mayor and City Council Offices. The ability to work in a politically sensitive environment is essential. 

Other duties of this position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Proactive maintenance of roofs and roof water drainage systems; 

  • Ability to install and modify office space cubicles, including ergonomic adjustments; 

  • Skilled at painting techniques and proper cleanup for small and larger surfaces, including graffiti removal; 

  • Perform drywall repair; 

  • Experienced in maintaining and repairing various plumbing fixtures and resolving plumbing issues (clogs, drainage, flushometer repair, piping work, mixing valve repairs, sink and faucet repairs); 

  • Monthly inspections of fire sprinkler systems and pumps; 

  • Flooring repair, including carpet and tile work; 

  • Familiarity with fire control panels; 

  • Experience in motors, pumps, and other architectural water feature infrastructure; 

  • Knowledge of fundamental provisions of various codes related to the maintenance and repair of facilities; 

  • Knowledge and experience related to door and lock repair and replacement work, which include electronic access control door hardware and door operators;   

  • Ability to draw sketches and plans for assigned projects, estimate the materials needed, and record keeping; 

  • Maintain all work order details, status updates, labor applied, and contractor costs in City’s work order database.
