Description

Applications are being accepted for the position of Preschool Teacher I with the City of South San Francisco in the Parks & Recreation Department.

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well-being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space. The Parks and Recreation Department is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. 

The Recreation Division sponsors recreation and enrichment programs that meet community needs, address childhood obesity, promote wellness, create a culture of curiosity and learning, enhance the quality of life for the participants, and stimulate economic and community development. The Recreation Division consists of eight program areas, including Aquatics, Classes, Cultural Arts, Preschool and Early Learning, Senior Services, Sports, Rentals, and Youth Enrichment Services, as well as Special Events. Recreation staff are also tasked with operating recreation centers, picnic sites and rental facilities, preschools and select South San Francisco Unified School District after school sites that serve residents of all age groups. 

Ideal Candidate

The ideal Preschool Teacher I will be a passionate and dedicated individual who is committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for young children. The candidate will possess foundational knowledge in child development and early education practices, as well as the ability to implement engaging and culturally responsive curriculum for preschool-aged children.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills and be able to connect with children in a manner that fosters positive guidance, builds self-esteem, and supports emotional and social development. The candidate will be patient, empathetic, and have the ability to create meaningful relationships with children, parents, and colleagues, ensuring that each child’s needs are met while maintaining a positive and inclusive environment.

In addition, the candidate will show initiative, effectively organizing and managing activities and schedules that promote early literacy, math, science, and overall cognitive growth. They will be capable of working within established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines, while also being flexible and receptive to ongoing learning and feedback. Able to manage multiple responsibilities, the ideal candidate will ensure the well-being and safety of children and contribute to the continuous improvement of the preschool program while maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating professionalism at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: Experience as a teacher in similar programs, such as children’s centers, Head Start, state pre-schools, or elementary schools.

Training:  Equivalent to graduation from high school and at least 12 units in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development (CD) including core courses in Child Development, Curriculum, Principles and Child, Family and Community. In addition, fifty days with 3+hours per day experience, or Associate teacher permit.

THE SELECTION PROCESS:

The process will first consist of a review of application materials, including responses to supplemental questions, which must be detailed and complete. Applicants whose submitted application materials demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities in the best alignment with the required and desired qualifications of this position will be selected to participate in the next phase of the qualification and selection process, which will include an oral panel interview, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025.

Following this examination, the top scoring candidates will be invited to a final selection interview with the hiring department.

Benefits

Retirement:  CalPERS retirement formula is 2% at age 60 for Classic members or; 2% at age 62 for “new members” as defined by Government Code §7522.04(e). Social Security and Medicare participation and the option to participate in 457 deferred compensation plans. City contributes equivalent of 1.5% of base pay towards a medical after-retirement account.

Health Insurance: City offers a choice of medical HMO (two providers) or PPO plan, and offers vision and dental coverage. City pays 100% of vision and dental premiums for employee and eligible dependents. Employees shall contribute 10% of the HMO premium cost based on category of coverage (single, two, family).  For PPO, employee pays cost difference between PPO and HMO plans. City provides 100% City-paid short- and long-term disability insurances. The City offers a discretionary benefit account for employees who demonstrate health coverage elsewhere.

Vacation: Fifteen to thirty working days annual vacation, based on the length of service.

Holidays: Thirteen total paid holidays per year plus one floating holiday.

Programs: 457 Deferred Compensation, Paid Family Leave, Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, Employee Assistance Program, Long-Term Care, Disability and Life Insurance Programs, City Recreation Classes, Reduced-fee Childcare Programs and Commuter Benefit Programs are available. 

This classification is in an employee bargaining unit.
