The Council-Manager municipal government has over 225 full-time staff. The Police Department was formed in 1966 and is currently staffed by 81 sworn and 34 non-sworn positions. The Department is a dynamic and enthusiastic service oriented organization with an annual budget of more than $20 million.

The Challenge

As a Police Officer your duties will typically include patrolling assigned areas; interacting with the public; conducting criminal investigations; enforcing laws; investigating collisions; preserving the peace and writing reports. You will be assigned to one of four shifts spanning the 24 hour day and these shifts will periodically change. In the Patrol Section you will work three 12 hour and 20 minute workdays and have four days off. If you are assigned to any other Section you will work four 10 hour workdays with three days off. As your skills develop you may be assigned to investigations; community policing, court liaison; traffic; canine; bicycle patrol; Special Weapons and Tactics Team; narcotics; or school resource officer.

The Selection Process

Properly complete and submit a Union City employment application and supplemental questionnaire with a copy of your P.O.S.T. Basic Certifcate of Completion.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that you will be invited to participate in the process. Only the candidates that have the best combination of qualifications in relation to the requirements and duties of the position will continue in the selection process. The process will include an oral panel interview with law enforcement professionals, may also include an interview with Operation and Support Services Managers, and other related test components. A limited number of applicants will be subjected to a polygraph examination, a thorough examination of their personal background, a thorough medical examination, and a psychological assessment.

Ideal Candidate

The Compensation
The Police Officer Lateral consists of seven steps ranging from $6,722 to $8,874 per month.  Following 12 months at step 5, employees with satisfactory+ performance are recommended for step 6.  Following an additional 12 months at step 6, employees with satisfactory+ performance will be recommended for step 7.

To be considered as a candidate for Police Officer Lateral, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Possess a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.
  • Have satisfactorily completed probation as a Peace Officer in the State of California, including the successful completion of a Field Training Program.
  • Prior experience must have been with a full service agency similar to Union City, including patrol experience within one year of the date of application is desired.
  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Be able to prove United States Citizenship.
  • Have no felony convictions.
  • 15 semester units at any accredited college in the United States is desired.
  • Possess a valid California driver's license.
  • Successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Prior use of controlled substances may be grounds for disqualification.

Benefits

  • Educational incentives amounting up to 7.5% of your salary upon completion of probation and tenure with the City of Union City.
  • CalPERS Retirement Benefit: Classic Employees - 3%@55 benefit. 3 year final average compensation. New Employees - 2.7%@57, 3 year final average compensation. Required PERS contributions vary by plan. All required contributions are tax deferred. There are no Social Security deductions (except 1.45% Medicare).
  • The City provides the employee up to $2,000/month to purchase medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Fully paid disability insurance.
  • $50,000 City paid Life and AD&D insurance.
  • $1,025 annual uniform allowance paid over 26 pay periods.
  • 116 holiday hours per year: 79 hours paid over 26 pay periods and the remaining 37 hours are credited to the holiday time bank on July 1st of each year.
  • 80 vacation hours increasing to a maximum of 200 hours per year.
  • Time and one half overtime with the option of pay or future time off.
  • 6.67 hours sick leave per month.
  • Retiree medical benefit.
  • Bilingual pay.
  • All safety equipment provided which includes a Glock .40 cal semi-automatic pistol and protective vest.
