Are you an experienced HVACR Mechanic with 4 years of experience?  If so, review the below opportunity.

The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) Mechanic will inspect, service, and repair a variety of refrigeration and air conditioning units and centrifugal or reciprocating chillers. This is a journey-level classification in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanic series.

About Valley Water:
Valley Water is a public agency with an operating and capital budget of $964 million, and over 900 employees. With headquarters in San José, Valley Water provides water supply, enhances streams and watersheds through creek restoration and habitat protection, provides flood protection for homes, schools, businesses and roadways, and partners with other agencies to provide trails and open space for the community.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspect, install, maintain, and repair HVACR systems, including pumps, evaporators, chillers, and boilers at Valley Water facilities.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshoot issues to ensure equipment operates at optimal performance.
  • Read and interpret engineering plans, schematics, specifications, and perform calculations for airflow, heat load, and water systems.
  • Document work activities, maintain logs, request materials, and track equipment history.
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment such as drills, welders, vacuum pumps, manifold gauges, and aerial lifts.
  • Coordinate with contractors, provide site information, and inspect completed work for quality and compliance.
  • Install and start up new systems, including relocating piping and ductwork, and operating rigging equipment to move heavy components.

Applicants whose experience and background best match the ideal experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and education are considered ideal candidates for the position. To determine the top candidates, each applicant will be assessed based on the ideal candidate criteria as listed below.

Ideal Experience:

  • At least four (4) years of hands-on experience maintaining and repairing light industrial or commercial HVACR systems

Ideal Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of commercial HVACR equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical documentation.
  • Skilled in using HVACR-specific tools (e.g., multi-meters, gauges, micrometers, air balancing hoods).
  • Capable of performing installation, removal, and relocation of HVACR equipment and ductwork.
  • Accurately estimate project materials, labor, and operational costs.
  • Compliant with EPA standards for refrigerant handling, system evacuation, and recharging.
  • Experienced in soldering and brazing copper and dissimilar metals.

Ideal Knowledge:

  • Thorough understanding of HVACR maintenance and repair methods.
  • Expertise in troubleshooting techniques and system diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of building automation and energy management control systems.
  • Familiarity with electronic, pneumatic, and programmable control systems.

Ideal Training and Education:

High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by a completed accredited HVACR vocational training program.
Required License or Certificate Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license. Individuals who do not meet the driver's license requirement due to a disability will be considered for a reasonable accommodation on a case-by-case basis.

EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification must be held at the time of appointment and maintained.

Facilities and Equipment Management Unit (Position Code 71) 

Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

This position requires the individual to be onsite and is typically not a teleworking position.
