The City of San Bruno Fire Department offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a Fire Cadet. Our one-year Fire Cadet program is an unpaid, volunteer work experience program that offers hands-on training, and introductory knowledge of firefighting skills, fire service tools and equipment. Cadets respond to emergency calls, render Basic Life Support and participate in training, and participate in the daily station duties.

Cadets must be willing to commit to 24-hour shifts, two to four times per month. The cadet program is one year in length. Upon completion, this program meets the manipulative training and experience requirements in obtaining a California State Fire Marshal’s Office Firefighter II certification.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• State of California EMT or National Registry EMT certification
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and a driving record with minimal violations
• Possession of a Firefighter I Academy certification (or proof of “student in good standing” letter signed by an Academy Instructor if currently enrolled)
• 18 years of age at the time of application

The Position:

The Customer Service Representative is the entry-level classification in the Customer Service Representative series. This classification has a primary focus on providing superior customer service to the citizens and customers of the City of Santa Clara in handling a variety of customer account and billing issues.  Incumbents in this classification may be assigned to answer telephone calls, handle difficult inquiries, perform cashiering duties, process business licenses, and perform functions associated with customer billing, analysis, account adjustments, collections, or the financial assistance programs offered to utility customers.  This classification is distinguished from the Senior Customer Service Representative in that the latter is a lead worker position requiring a greater degree of technical knowledge, analytical ability, and independent judgment.

The County of San Mateo's Department of Public Works is seeking applications for the position of Electrician. 

 

Electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment in and around County buildings. This position requires the ability to work independently in different locations with minimal supervision. While much of the work is performed independently, the Construction Services section is characterized by a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie.

Construction Services Section
Construction Services offers specialized crafts services that go beyond routine maintenance provided by the Facilities Operations and Maintenance section. We partner with the County and Cities to deliver carpentry, graffiti abatement, and lighting district services. Our skilled team, including craftsmen, maintenance workers, utility workers, and office support staff, handles diverse tasks from remodels to new construction projects. Trades represented include electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting, ensuring comprehensive solutions for our clients.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

• Eight or more years of experience performing Journey-level facilities maintenance electrical work.
• A Journeyman's Electrician Card (certificate).

The San Mateo County Attorney's Office is seeking candidates for the 2026 Michael P. Murphy Public Law Fellowship.

In 2014, the County of San Mateo established a Fellowship position in honor of former San Mateo County Counsel Michael P. Murphy. Mr. Murphy served in the County Counsel’s office from 1982 to 2011, the last four years as County Counsel. Vacancies in Bay Area county counsel offices typically attract many qualified applicants and new attorneys are generally not considered for these positions. This Fellowship provides an opportunity for new attorneys to receive training and experience in advising and litigating on behalf of government agencies as they begin their legal careers.

Attorneys in the San Mateo County Attorney’s Office (previously known as the County Counsel’s Office) are generalists. We provide legal advice to County departments, school districts, and special districts; litigate civil cases in State and Federal courts and before administrative agencies; and manage calendar assignments in Dependency, Probate, Lanterman Petris Short Act, and other specialized areas of law. Fellows are given the opportunity to experience a wide range of public sector work, in litigation, public policy, and advice roles. The goal is to provide each Fellow a year in the life of a Deputy County Attorney.

The one-year Fellowship position is focused on providing opportunities to recent law school graduates and judicial clerks. This Fellowship will begin in the Fall of 2026. Law School graduates who will be sitting for the 2026 July Bar Exam are encouraged to apply.

A Dispatcher II is a civilian employee of the Police Department who performs a variety of tasks in the Department’s Support Services Division. The Dispatcher II acts as the Department’s primary dispatcher, receiving and relaying incoming calls for emergency and non-emergency assistance; dispatching police units; operating a variety of telecommunications equipment including radio, telephone, and computer-aided dispatch systems; status monitoring, records and file maintenance in a computer-aided environment; and entry level dispatch training. A Dispatcher II may be assigned to work various hours, shifts, holidays, weekends and overtime.

Additional duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: prioritize requests for service based upon available resources, receive radio requests and handle accordingly, type, process and file a wide variety of reports and materials including memos, letters, complaints, declarations, warrants, citations, crime and traffic reports.  Assists Department personnel and the public in person and by phone performing record checks, collecting fees and mailing requested reports to outside agencies in accordance with established regulations. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Have a combination of education and work experience, including a minimum of one year of dispatch work; two years general office work involving typing of varied materials, public contact, general filing and basic record keeping; type at least 40 wpm (net).  Have knowledge of business English, spelling; modern office practices and procedures; record keeping. Ability to dispatch police units quickly and effectively; work under pressure; exercise independent judgment; work with minimal supervision; make sound decisions in emergency situations; learn assigned clerical tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routine; write English legibly; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; operate computer-aided dispatch system, 911 emergency telephone, and other multi-line telephone systems, various law enforcement telecommunications systems, radio console with headsets and handsets, computer keyboards, cameras, intercoms, security. Willingness to work varying shifts and radio dispatching skills. 

SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

This is a one-year, limited-term assignment, with the possibility of extension based on budget, departmental needs and approval. The position will require a minimum of 24.5 hours and up to a maximum of 39.5 hours per week. The work schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift schedules are reviewed every four months and are subject to change.

The Environmental Health Services Division of San Mateo County Health is seeking a well-qualified candidate for the position of Environmental Health Program Supervisor – Hazardous Materials Program.

The Position

Working under general supervision, the successful candidate will supervise, direct, organize, manage, evaluate, audit, and provide accountability for one or more Environmental Health programs in areas encompassing hazardous materials/hazardous waste and environmental health program outreach for pollution prevention, public health protection, and environmental health operations.

The current vacancy supervises staff in the Environmental Health Services Division's hazardous materials/hazardous waste areas and Pollution Prevention programs. This position is located in San Mateo, but will require some travel/driving throughout the county to perform the duties of the job.

The Hazardous Materials Program Supervisor will work in the Certified Unified Program Agencies (CUPA) program and additionally oversee the Pollution Prevention Program. In addition to supervising Pollution Prevention Program work, this position will supervise CUPA regulatory programs, including the Hazardous Materials Business Plan Program, Hazardous Waste Generator (HWG) Program, California Accidental Release Prevention Program, Hazardous Materials Program Fees, Underground Storage Tanks (UST) Program, and Above Ground Petroleum Storage Tank Program.

Key responsibilities include providing subject matter expertise on the Hazardous Waste Generator program and supervising a team of nine specialists across multiple programs. Additionally, the supervisor will also serve in a leadership capacity with the District Attorney's office, political leaders, and county management, and will ensure compliance with all inspection and reporting requirements. Additionally, the incumbent will provide programmatic supervision around website management, messaging, and outreach services for grant work and to other programs within the Division, and ensure messaging and branding alignment with County Health.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will bring enthusiasm and a strong commitment to public service. More specifically, the ideal candidate will demonstrate:

• Proficient in all CUPA regulatory program areas and possess a valid ICC (International Code Council) certification as an underground tank inspector.

• Experienced with at least four years of journey level experience in hazardous materials management in the areas of storage, transportation, handling and disposal of hazardous materials and/or hazardous waste; underground tank construction, monitoring and removal; or underground tank site remediation.
• Knowledgeable of hazardous materials management, including its scientific background, technology, principles, methods, investigative techniques and problems; laws, regulations and codes governing hazardous materials; emergency response procedures and protocols; government agencies, community organizations and business establishments as they relate to environmental health and hazardous materials management; basic practices in the transportation and disposal of hazardous wastes.
• Knowledgeable of contract and grant monitoring and expenditures, grant applications, RFP processes.
• Approachable and politically astute with a supervisory style that quickly fosters trust, loyalty, respect and commitment from employees.
• An experienced hazardous materials management professional with a thorough understanding of the full range of issues, practices and regulations related to the CUPA programs.

This position requires a valid International Code Council (ICC) certification as an underground tank inspector. If you do not have the ICC certification, you will be required to acquire it within six months of being hired. San Mateo County Health's Public Health, Policy and Planning Division has exciting field-based opportunities for well-qualified and motivated Nurse Practitioners to provide both primary and urgent care to adults from vulnerable populations within our community—people experiencing homelessness and/or in shelters, monolingual Spanish speakers and other new immigrants, and those without insurance or underinsured. These services are provided through various Mobile Clinic modalities and venues, including but not limited to street medicine, shelter medicine, and the mobile coach. We are looking for collaborative Nurse Practitioners to work in and lead various multidisciplinary service teams in the field to provide comprehensive, low-threshold, client-centered care and engagement.

Teams are staffed by a Nurse Practitioner (NP), Psychiatrist, Medical Services Assistant, AOD Case Manager, and Patient Services Assistants. These teams work closely with our community partners from the Human Services Agency and community-based organizations who locate and identify clients needing medical and/or mental health services, as well as provide additional health, housing, and social services in the field.

Under general supervision, Nurse Practitioners provide urgent care and primary health care services such as physical examinations, chronic disease management (e.g., diabetes and hypertension), and referrals/linkages to specialty clinics as appropriate.

Currently, Public Health Clinics has one full-time, regular, 40-hour-per-week vacancy for a bilingual Spanish Nurse Practitioner and two 40-hour-per-week, Limited-Term Nurse Practitioner vacancies, requiring flexible schedules and field-based work at different locations. Sixty-five percent of the NP’s time will be in the field, with the remainder spent in the office documenting notes, placing orders, and coordinating with other staff as needed.

The ideal candidate has experience:

• In family practice addressing chronic disease management

• In the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections

• Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams

• With the underserved population, including those who are homeless

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide low-threshold, comprehensive care for San Mateo County’s most marginalized and vulnerable populations, including people experiencing homelessness, those in shelters, migrant and immigrant farmworkers, the recently incarcerated, the uninsured, and those with financial challenges.

• Provide comprehensive and urgent care in a variety of non-traditional settings, including homeless encampments, outdoor locations, shelters, and a mobile RV clinic.

• Demonstrate the ability to work closely and collaboratively with a small team in often challenging environments (e.g., homeless encampments, shelters, extreme weather, individuals under the influence, or those with mental health challenges).

• Take stewardship of medical care for assigned geographic populations and/or shelters.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Under administrative direction, the position manages the Air Quality Modeling and Analysis (AQM&A) Section in the AIM Division. The manager is responsible for: maintaining a positive work environment within the AQM&A Section to promote a culture of excellence; directing the development and evaluation of air quality modeling analyses at both regional and local scales, including modeling assessment of potential health impacts from various air pollutants and emission sources; with support from AIM Division staff, developing, evaluating, and reporting modeling-based assessments of community exposure and health impacts from air pollution; interacting with the Board of Directors, Advisory Council, and Air District management and staff on air quality modeling assessments; and performing related work as assigned.

Incumbents in this class make decisions that have impacts on daily operations and implementation of established procedures and policies and solve problems requiring analyses of issues that may result in deviations from routine processes, new technology, and additional resources.  Incumbents make recommendations for program planning and directing, as well as organizing new and future resource needs.

About the Division
The Assessment, Inventory, and Modeling (AIM) Division prepares comprehensive source emission inventories for the Bay Area and conducts air quality modeling at both regional and community scales. AIM prepares technical assessments that evaluate equity in air pollution exposures and health impacts in support of Air District programs. AIM coordinates and implements programs to improve and report estimates of emissions of criteria pollutants, toxic air contaminants, and climate forcing pollutants. AIM maintains the Bay Area photochemical grid modeling platform and functions, developed and analyze modeled concentrations, exposures of toxic air contaminants, particulate matter, ozone and their precursors, to support targeted strategies that reduce impacts of air pollution both regionally and within communities, especially where Assembly Bill (AB) 617 community action plans are being developed and implemented. AIM reviews and provides guidance on environmental health risk assessments within environmental review documents prepared pursuant to California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

The incumbent will assume responsibility for leading and managing multiple programs and functional areas within the AIM Division and assisting the Division Director in implementing the Air District’s policies and best practices, as well as making decisions regarding program planning, project prioritization, and staff resources allocation. The incumbent will also lead or support collaborative projects across Divisions and provide technical assessments of modeled air pollutant concentrations and health risk associated with stationary and mobile sources.

Develops and implements goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for the assigned programs, especially those related to regional and local air quality modeling, to support the Air District’s regulation and policy development and implementation.

Directs, organizes, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of assigned staff; selects and trains staff and provides for their professional development.

Directs the preparation, maintenance, verification, and reconciliation of a wide variety of reports.

Develops, reviews, and recommends improved methods and procedures; directs the team in using appropriate modeling analysis approaches and project/task management tools.

Directs the maintenance of and maintains accurate records; prepares clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.

Analyzes technical data and problems, prepares and presents reports and recommendations regarding operational and policy issues to the Board, various committees, and other Air District groups.

Analyzes and reviews local, state, and federal legislation to determine its impact on the Air District.

Responds to requests for public information regarding the Air District's policies, procedures and operations.

Represents the Air District and assists the Director/Officer as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills is:

Equivalent to graduation from a four (4) year college or university with major coursework in a job related field, including atmospheric and environmental science, environmental modeling, or environmental engineering, and four (4) years of professional level work experience preferably in a public agency, of which at least two (2) years were at a supervisory level. Some positions may require specialized training, education and experience.
