POSITION INFORMATION

The LARPD Senior Services Venture Trips department is recruiting a part-time Recreation Leader II - Van Driver to transport participants on local or regional day trips, as well as occasional overnight trips. The qualified candidate will become part of a team of staff that programs, coordinates and executes social destination opportunities for the age 50+ local population. The incumbent will assist with office coverage, customer service, and trip escorts.

Typical duties include:

• Drives a 14 passenger van or other suitable vehicle transporting seniors and persons with disabilities.
• Maintains accurate trip records.
• Provides assistance to passengers, as necessary, to include carrying, loading or unloading passenger's packages, mobility equipment and other belongings.
• Collects tickets.   
• Answers telephones, provides some assistance to office staff.
• Administers first aid, if necessary.
• Performs routine safety check of vehicles; notes and reports safety or mechanical problems.

Requirement: Must possess or be willing to obtain a Class B drivers license within 3 months of hire date.\

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs support work related to recreational programs, events, and activities; provides instruction and conducts classes/activities for program participants under the guidance and direction of higher-level staff; prepares buildings, fields, and facilities for scheduled activities or events; provides routine administrative support; and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises direction over lower-level staff and volunteers.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level classification in the Recreation Leader series responsible for performing the full range of recreation program class and activities support.  Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative.  Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  This classification is distinguished from the Recreation Coordinator in that the latter is responsible for all operational activities within an assigned program area, including serving in an ongoing lead capacity over program staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management reserves the right to add, modifies, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

1. Conducts and monitors recreational program activities within one or more assigned program areas; performs tasks in accordance with rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
2. Assists with the operation of recreation/sports camps or other large programs; provides instruction and conducts classes/activities for program participants under the guidance and direction of a program leader.
3. Monitors and enforces policies and procedures with respect to participant safety.
4. Inspects program areas and equipment and recommends maintenance and repair as needed.
5. Maintains records of participation and collects participant fees.
6. Assists in the planning and implementation of recreation program activities and classes.
7. Transports, issues, receives, and controls the use of recreational equipment and supplies; monitors equipment inventories and recommends procurement of items as needed.
8. Opens, secures, and cleans program areas before and after program use; prepares program areas for scheduled recreational activities and events.
9. May direct the work of lower level staff assisting in a particular program area.
10. Performs routine administrative duties such as phone and counter reception and registration processing.
11. Assists with District special events as needed.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

 
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels.  May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions.  Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays. 
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to perform medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and to operate a vehicle to transport materials and equipment to various sites and offices; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.  The classification supports indoor and outdoor recreation programs requiring frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, or tools and equipment used in assigned program area.  Program activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds or higher weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED is desirable.
• One year of relevant recreation program support experience.

THE POSITION

The Facility Attendant serves as the first point of contact with community center users during evening and weekend activities and rentals. The ideal candidate should enjoy serving the public, possess confident communication and customer service skills, and be able to function in a setting that may be at times busy and fast-paced or quiet and slow.

The position will typically work on two or three weekday evenings (Mon.-Fri.), from 5:00 pm until close (2-4 hours), two or three Saturdays each month (approximately 6-9 hours, daytime or evening), and occasional Sundays (daytime or evening); a typical schedule will be about 13-18 hours per week, variable based on the weekly facility use program schedule, and set in advance by the Facility Coordinator.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Provide friendly, professional customer service to Community Center users, serving as main point of contact during evening and weekend activities, and maintaining a consistent presence for users at all times.
• Follow and explain City and department policies, procedures, and facility use guidelines.
• May assist user groups with indoor or outdoor event set up and take down of equipment and/or furniture such as tables, chairs, podiums, and A/V equipment.
• Locks and unlocks facility doors on schedule; secures buildings during and after activities/rentals.
• Updates attendance sheets, tally sheets and user status sheets.

TRANSPORTATION SPECIALIST

(Senior Citizen Van Driver)

$14.64 - $17.80/hr., Part-time, No Benefits

DEFINITION:  Under supervision, drives the City’s 7-15 passenger van(s) and provides responsible, safe transport for senior citizens and the physically disabled.  Schedule may include evenings, holidays and weekends; work schedule will not exceed 28 hours per week.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:  All applicants MUST attach proof of Class B Driver’s License with passenger endorsement at the time you submit your employment application.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The employee must have the ability to:

• Transport seniors and disabled community members to and from appointments.
• Have the ability to operate a wheelchair lift including correctly loading the passenger onto the wheelchair lift and effectively securing the individual to the vehicle using the appropriate tie downs; assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle; keep daily records and logs for attendance, mileage and maintenance concerns.
• Complete a thorough pre-trip and post trip inspection of the transportation vehicle on a daily basis.
• Maintain a punctual schedule of picking up seniors for their appointments to ensure a high quality of service.
• Maintain vans, including weekly wash, motor pool inspection, weekly inventory of emergency supplies, and securing the vehicles in the City yard at the end of the night; Contact immediate supervisor and motor pool supervisors when mechanical failures arise.
• Ensure the safety of the community including passengers and personal care attendants as well as other drivers and pedestrians throughout the City.
• Ensure all passengers are safely seat belted in and that safety precautions are adhered to at all times.
• Answer phones and interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
• Navigate the City of Fontana efficiently including adhering to speed limits and follow all traffic laws.
• Follow appropriate cash handling procedures including writing out a receipt for all customers that pay for a ride at their pick up time; Complete a daily transportation log which includes establishing the pickup times for the route’s passengers.
• Double check the day’s schedule and follow up with the transportation office to ensure that all passengers have returned home safely either through the senior services transportation vehicles or on their own accord.
• Operate a computer and related software.
• Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Library Page responsibilities include a variety of routine tasks that maintain the condition of the library in accordance with standard procedures.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

The Library Page reports to the Circulation Supervisor and may also receive guidance from other staff members. There are no direct reports or supervision exercised.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Include but are not limited to the following:) Under direction, part-time hourly workers in this assignment perform a variety of routine manual library support tasks including sorting, shelving, stacking, and retrieving a wide variety

Under direction, workers in this assignment provide superb customer service support at the Larkspur Library by greeting patrons, checking books in and out, answering basic questions regarding library services and operations over the phone and in person, and other duties as assigned.  The Library Aide may also perform various routine and repetitive tasks relating to the maintenance of the library collection. May be asked to assist Circulation staff and assist in a variety of special projects and services as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

ABOUT THE POSITION:

City of Gilroy is recruiting for a seasonal Pool Cashier/Registration Assistant for the 2020 Summer Season. The main goal of the Recreation Department is to offer excellent recreation programs that provide community members with a wide-range of opportunities to celebrate life and community through people, parks, programs, and special events which are delivered by a team of employees dedicated to offering quality recreational, social, and cultural services to all Gilroy residents.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under direct supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, Pool Manager and/or Assistant Manager, performs basic cashiering duties and varied clerical work of average difficulty as needed to facilitate swim lesson participant registration and fee collection for recreational swimming program.

Please note:

• Summer Aquatics Program would like all staff to begin employment on May 1, 2020 for training and work shifts on Saturdays and Sundays.
• Staff who are unable to begin work on May 1 will begin employment on June 8.
• Applicants who can commit to the entire season (May 1 – August 14) will be given preference.
• All staff beginning employment on May 1 must attend HR Orientation on April 27, 28 or 29.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Firefighter is a journey level class within the Fire Department responsible for performing a variety of duties and responsibilities in support of the department’s fire prevention and suppression responsibility.  This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Engineer in that the Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of fire equipment and apparatus. 

The Engineer is the journey level class responsible for the operation and general maintenance of firefighting apparatus, equipment, vehicles and tools. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Firefighter by the driving of fire apparatus and vehicles and the operation of apparatus, equipment, and tools at an emergency scene; serve as Fire Captain as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)

• Perform a variety of fire prevention and fire suppression duties and responsibilities at a fire scene such as responding to alarms, hooking lines to hydrants, laying lines of hose, conducting initial attacks on fires, directing streams of water, carrying and setting up ladders, ventilating buildings, performing search and rescue, administering first aid, sweeping, and cleaning after fires, as well as performing salvage and overhaul.
• Perform medical emergency duties such as performing CPR, giving oxygen, hooking up monitors, and stripping IVs.
• Maintain firefighting equipment which may include washing, polishing and servicing fire apparatus and equipment; test, wash and hang hose.
• Participate in drills and training exercises with engine company employees; attend special training sessions on firefighting and prevention techniques.
• Study and learn City layout and water systems.
• Participate in engine company fire prevention inspections of local businesses and companies. 
• May participate in fire investigations as to the cause and origin.
• Demonstrate a general understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
• Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve complaints.
• Participate in public education programs in the areas of fire suppression and fire prevention.
• Work Monday-Friday, times to be to determined; be available for calls when off duty at time and a half.
• Extinguish fires and take proper precautions to prevent rekindle thereof.
• Respond, as designated, with their units to all alarms and emergency calls, and perform duties as required.
• Keep the apparatus, equipment, tools and station premises neat, clean and in good order.
• Perform related work as their superior officer may require.
• For expedience in response to alarms they shall acquaint themselves with the streets, topography, physical conditions and other matters affecting response in the Fire Department.
• They shall, under supervision of their superior officers, be responsible for the condition and operation of apparatus to which they are assigned and are held accountable for its readiness for service.
• They shall be continually familiar with practices and procedures relative to water supply, hydrants, fire streams, pump capacities and other operations which will enable them to perform their duties efficiently.
• They shall work as a company unit under the command of their company officer while at fires or other emergencies unless ordered otherwise.
• They shall follow the chain of command in all communications regarding Department business.
• All inquiries from the press shall be referred to the incident commander
• Perform other related duties as required.

Working Conditions:

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required.  Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may work around or in contact with hazardous materials, blood products and other potentially toxic substances.  Incumbent may be subject to physical threats, verbal abuse, or other stressful situations.  During fire suppression activities, incumbent wears self-contained breathing apparatus and enters smoke filled buildings.

License/Certificate:

• Possession of a valid Class ‘C’ California driver's license and no more than 2-points on driving record.

A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of a high school diploma. Equivalent of three years of municipal fire suppression experience.

License/Certificate:

• California State Certificate Firefighter I.
• Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license or Firefighters Class B driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
• California State EMT Certificate and National Registry EMT Card.
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
• Possession of Associate of Arts/Science degree (desirable).

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Firefighter is a journey level class within the Fire Department responsible for performing a variety of duties and responsibilities in support of the department’s fire prevention and suppression responsibility.  This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Engineer in that the Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of fire equipment and apparatus. 

The Engineer is the journey level class responsible for the operation and general maintenance of firefighting apparatus, equipment, vehicles and tools. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Firefighter by the driving of fire apparatus and vehicles and the operation of apparatus, equipment, and tools at an emergency scene; serve as Fire Captain as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)

• Perform a variety of fire prevention and fire suppression duties and responsibilities at a fire scene such as responding to alarms, hooking lines to hydrants, laying lines of hose, conducting initial attacks on fires, directing streams of water, carrying and setting up ladders, ventilating buildings, performing search and rescue, administering first aid, sweeping, and cleaning after fires, as well as performing salvage and overhaul.
• Perform medical emergency duties such as performing CPR, giving oxygen, hooking up monitors, and stripping IVs.
• Maintain firefighting equipment which may include washing, polishing and servicing fire apparatus and equipment; test, wash and hang hose.
• Participate in drills and training exercises with engine company employees; attend special training sessions on firefighting and prevention techniques.
• Study and learn City layout and water systems.
• Participate in engine company fire prevention inspections of local businesses and companies. 
• May participate in fire investigations as to the cause and origin.
• Demonstrate a general understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
• Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve complaints.
• Participate in public education programs in the areas of fire suppression and fire prevention.
• Work Monday-Friday, times to be to determined; be available for calls when off duty at time and a half.
• Extinguish fires and take proper precautions to prevent rekindle thereof.
• Respond, as designated, with their units to all alarms and emergency calls, and perform duties as required.
• Keep the apparatus, equipment, tools and station premises neat, clean and in good order.
• Perform related work as their superior officer may require.
• For expedience in response to alarms they shall acquaint themselves with the streets, topography, physical conditions and other matters affecting response in the Fire Department.
• They shall, under supervision of their superior officers, be responsible for the condition and operation of apparatus to which they are assigned and are held accountable for its readiness for service.
• They shall be continually familiar with practices and procedures relative to water supply, hydrants, fire streams, pump capacities and other operations which will enable them to perform their duties efficiently.
• They shall work as a company unit under the command of their company officer while at fires or other emergencies unless ordered otherwise.
• They shall follow the chain of command in all communications regarding Department business.
• All inquiries from the press shall be referred to the incident commander
• Perform other related duties as required.

Working Conditions:

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required.  Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may work around or in contact with hazardous materials, blood products and other potentially toxic substances.  Incumbent may be subject to physical threats, verbal abuse, or other stressful situations.  During fire suppression activities, incumbent wears self-contained breathing apparatus and enters smoke filled buildings.

License/Certificate:

• California State Certificate Firefighter I.
• Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license or Firefighters Class B driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
• California State EMT Certificate and National Registry EMT Card.
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
• Possession of Associate of Arts/Science degree (desirable).
