THE POSITION: The San Mateo Public Library has an opening for the position of per diem Librarian I in Children’s Services. The Librarian in this role will lead the development and coordination of the library’s Families for Literacy program, working closely with other Children Division staff under the supervision and guidance of the Supervising Librarian. In addition, this position will coordinate with families participating in Project Read, as well as fill coverage gaps on the Library’s service desks at the Main Library and/or branches. The library is looking for someone who embodies the City of San Mateo’s shared values of respect, creativity, inclusivity, transparency, and integrity to provide a wide variety of library support work.

Responsibilities include serving at the Library’s information desks at the Main Library and Branches; cultivating community partnerships; planning and providing early literacy programming; planning and providing training, workshops and resources to staff, parents and caregivers to support school readiness; organize family activities that promote literacy and parent education; provide support to English language / new immigrant classes; and performing other tasks as assigned.

Salary and Hours: $34.30/hour (Step 1) salary; initial appointment is usually at the first step.  This is a regularly scheduled 19-hr per week position with the following hours, at least one Sunday shift approximately every two months, and some evenings and weekends depending on programming or event schedules. The schedule may change per the operational needs of the Library. This position is considered part time and offers limited benefits after working a specified number of hours.

• Monday: 9:00 am – 2:00 pm (5 hr) - Main Library
• Tuesday: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm (4 hr) - Main Library
• Wednesday: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm (4 hr) - Main Library
• Thursday: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm (6 hr) - Main Library

QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university is required; previous public library experience desirable but not required. Successful Live Scan fingerprint background check. 

KNOWLEDGE OF: Modern professional principles and practices of library science; modern procedures, methods, techniques and sources used in a library work; standard library technology, library automation, computers, software and library procedures; excellent customer service techniques and practices; resources and practices applicable to area of assignment. 

ABILITY TO: Operate computerized cataloging and bibliographic databases; assist library patrons in response to reference and related library questions; implement and enforce Library and City policies and procedures; work well with the public; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of work; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; work shifts as assigned.

SALARY AND HOURS: $34.30/hour (Step 1); initial appointment is usually at the first step. This is a regularly scheduled 15-hr per week position with the following hours and at least one Sunday shift approximately every two months. The schedule may change per the operational needs of the Library. This position is considered part time and offers limited benefits after working a specified number of hours. Schedule below will be set when the library returns to normal hours of operation, during the interim hours on Monday and Tuesday may change.

• Tuesday: 6:00 – 9:00 pm (3 hr) - Main Library, Adult Services
• Saturday: 9:30 am– 4:00 pm ( 6 hr) - Main Library, Children's

THE POSITION

The main job of a Library Page is putting books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines back on the shelves and preparing the library for opening and closing. The ability to quickly and accurately sort things alphabetically and numerically is required. This is an ideal job for someone who enjoys organizing and who can work quietly on their own.

DEFINITION

Under supervision, sorts, shelves, straightens, relocates, and searches for library materials, re-orders and organizes materials as needed, provides basic directional information to patrons, performs basic circulation duties using computer software, performs physical tasks to support library programs and procedures, performs closing procedures, and does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Sorts and shelves materials, assists at public service desks; inspects materials for wear and damage and does basic mending of same; keeps books and periodical shelves in order; assists in taking inventory of books; performs basic custodial tasks as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 Knowledge of: Basic clerical functions, principles of alphabetical and numerical filing, basic record keeping procedures.

Ability to: Sort material quickly and accurately in alphabetic or numeric order; follow oral and written directions; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to library patrons, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Must be physically able to stand for extended periods, walk, bend, kneel, push wheeled carts, lift, reach overhead, go up and down stairs, and use a step stool.

Availability for evening and Saturday shifts is required.

Age: Minimum age of sixteen.

Education: Completion of the tenth grade in high school.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The incumbent should have the ability to read, write, and carry out oral and written directions, maintain cooperative work relationships, and operate various park maintenance equipment. Individuals must possess a valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record (recent DMV printout required). This is seasonal work which will include weekends and holidays depending on the needs of the department.

• Perform a wide variety of general grounds and facility maintenance work including raking leaves, cleaning walkways, removing debris, cleaning restrooms, and related work.
• Water, weed, prune, renovate, and fertilize shrubs, trees, flowerbeds, and landscaped areas.
• Complete turf care including mowing, thatching, fertilizing, plugging, spraying, and installation of new turf areas with both seed and sod.
• Prepare soil and plant flowerbeds, shrubs, trees and landscape areas, including staking, fertilizing and other necessary procedures.
• Utilize a wide variety of hand and power tools and landscape maintenance equipment including a rotary gang mower tractor, rider mowers, tractors, trencher, sprayer, brush chipper and chainsaws.
• Move and install park and recreation equipment. Perform routine preventive maintenance on mowing equipment and hand and power tools used in the work.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

The incumbent may be required to work on weekends.

This is a non-benefited casual position.  A casual employee may not work more than 1000 hours per fiscal year.
