The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Equipment Superintendent in the Public Works Department—a critical leadership role at the center of the City’s fleet strategy and sustainability goals. Working in close partnership with the Public Works Operations Manager, you will help shape the future of Berkeley’s diverse and highly visible municipal fleet.

The Equipment Maintenance Division includes 14 full-time technicians and two supervisors, and the Equipment Superintendent is directly accountable for ensuring safe, efficient, and fiscally responsible fleet operations. This role offers the opportunity to lead and innovate while managing two repair facilities and overseeing a fleet of more than 570 vehicles and equipment assets, including light-duty vehicles, on- and off-road heavy equipment, refuse trucks, generators, and emergency vehicles.

A key focus of this position is advancing the City’s fleet electrification and clean transportation initiatives, including navigating California’s Advanced Clean Fleets regulations and collaborating with Engineering to plan and build the required charging infrastructure. You will work closely with user departments—primarily Police, Fire, Parks, Public Works, and the Zero Waste Division—to ensure the right equipment is procured, maintained, and deployed, while providing clear and actionable reporting on fleet condition, utilization, and lifecycle costs.

You understand how to articulate the long-term financial value of assets, balancing upfront capital investment with operational savings. You are skilled at using a Fleet Information Management System, leveraging telematics and data analytics to monitor utilization, right-size the fleet, reduce waste, and maximize efficiency. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

EDUCATION
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Additional coursework in vehicle and equipment maintenance, public or business administration, or related areas is preferred.

EXPERIENCE
Seven years of increasingly responsible equipment maintenance experience at the journey level or above which includes a minimum of three years supervision at a level equivalent to or above the Mechanic Supervisor class.

Additional coursework in vehicle and equipment maintenance, public or business administration, or related areas may be substituted for the non-supervisory experience, on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Position Duties

As part of the Engineering Services Division, Survey Section of the Public Works Department is responsible for delivering land surveying services on a variety of City projects including street widening/improvements, storm and sanitary facilities, library/community center/fire station sites, and airfield projects. These land surveying services include, but are not limited to the following: topography, property acquisition, construction staking, pavement marking layout, and monument preservation.

The Survey Section is currently recruiting to fill one (1) Instrument Person vacancy. An Instrument Person performs a variety of sub-professional surveying and engineering functions of moderate difficulty either on a survey crew in the field or in the Survey Section office.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

• Acts as instrument person on a survey party.
• Records field notes and prepares maps and sketches from survey data.
• Sets up, adjusts, and operates all types of survey instruments.
• Provides lead direction and training to other survey personnel.
• Uses modern, survey-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
• Calculates grades and enters data into field books.
• Turns angles and extends horizontal line using a total station.
• Uses the level to obtain vertical control.
• Uses the level, total station, rod, targets to perform topographic surveying in order to describe the existing features of a piece of land in order that it may be reproduced as a plan map.
• Locates survey points by measurement, magnetometer and from maps of former surveys.
• Assist with transferring electronic field data to a PC workstation, processing and interpreting the data, and checking for errors.
• Assists with producing high-quality, computer-generated topography maps and tables using sophisticated engineering software.

This is the journey level class in a four class surveying series. This class differs from the next higher class of Survey Party Chief in that incumbents of the latter perform sub-professional surveying work and are usually responsible for completing only a segment of a surveying program or project.

Family Camp in Yosemite is located in the Sierras, about 10 miles west of Yosemite National Park. Family Camp is a summer recreational facility run by the City of San Jose. The camp serves 250-300 campers per day. The program is geared for families by providing lodging, meal service, recreation activities and retail operations.

NOTE: This position requires the Part-Time Unbenefited Cook to report onsite to the Family Camp Yosemite facility in Groveland, California. On-site living facilities are available during the peak season May-October. Schedule will be determined based on operational needs. 

Position and Duties

The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) Part-Time Unbenefited Cook vacancy at Family Camp in Yosemite.

Family Camp at Yosemite is a 51-acre all-inclusive Camp located in Groveland, California near Yosemite National Park where campers are served three meals a day plus snacks and beverages. The Part-Time Cook will be responsible for managing food service operations which include overseeing seasonal staff for kitchen support, menu planning, inventory budgeting, ordering, and control, coordinating with vendors, kitchen maintenance and cleaning, as well as meal preparation for guests and staff (up to 300 people per day).

The Salary range for this classification is $25.96 – $31.52 hourly.
This salary range includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

The Part-Time Unbenefited Cook will work seasonal from April through October with varying hours week to week based on the needs of Camp. Regular season operates May through August this position will work 40 hours a week during this time. The shoulder season (April- May & August to October) schedule will be based on operation needs and private group rentals. The ideal candidate will have experience cooking for a large number of guests, accommodating dietary restrictions and managing a commercial kitchen. 

General duties include training part-time food service employees, assigning work and providing direction; developing and maintaining relationships with work experience program volunteers; developing seasonal food and beverage menus; overseeing food preparation quality and safety; and developing and maintaining an attractive and consistent presentation. Additional duties may be assigned in accordance with facility management needs. DEFINITION: Under general supervision of the Youth and Teens Supervisor, the Preschool Instructor plans, organizes, and implements preschool programming for children ages 3-5 years old in the Kinder Cubs Preschool Program, our preparatory class for Transitional Kindergarten (TK.) PART TIME RECREATION SPECIALIST I/II

This position will primarily be assigned to front desk reception and facility assistance for the Recreation Center.

• Plans, promotes, develops, and oversees a portion of assigned recreation program(s); participates in planning and leading activities; promotes assigned program(s) through a variety of mediums; may schedule, train, and guidance to part-time staff;
• Provides a variety of administrative support to assigned program(s); maintains inventory of equipment, supplies, and related items; maintains accurate records related to participation, attendance, behavior, progress, and related statistics;
• Participates in marketing Recreation Department programs and activities; use social media to promote programs and activities; creates and/or distributes promotional material; coordinates marketing materials for distribution; posts information about programs, activities, and events to the City website;
• Provides support for and participates in a variety of City events, such as staff luncheons, senior luncheons, Brown Bag program, Youth in Government program, Youth Advisory Committee events, and other City functions; may be assigned responsibility for transportation of participants, equipment, and/or delivery of goods; may be assigned to decorate, setup, or run portions of events;
• Serves as a liaison for special events; receives and manages special event applications from the public; provides information to Director for staff reports to City Council; coordinates necessary interdepartmental tasks as needed for events;  distributes applications and tasks to required individuals; acts as point person for the City;
• Provides effective customer service both in-person and on the phone; interacts with community members; conducts registrations; attends tabling events; may assist with front-office coverage;
• Attends meetings, workshops, and other related duties as required; and
• Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Principals, techniques, and practices involved in the delivery of recreation services; recreation program development, organization, and planning; techniques in promoting recreation programs; safety standards and practices; basic principles of lead direction; common recreation activities and sports; department rules and regulations; first aid and CPR.

Ability to: Work with Microsoft Office programs; exercise independent judgment in performing job responsibilities; direct volunteer and paid staff using positive communication skills; organize and/or direct groups and individuals participating in pre-school age, youth, adult, and/or senior recreation programs and special events; think and act quickly in emergencies; work to maintain and help create an action-oriented atmosphere with both the public and staff; understand and carry out written and oral directions. establish and maintain cooperative relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors; practice basic recreation skills in a variety of areas.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way would be:

Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in recreation, gerontology, therapeutics, or a related field.   

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience in the recreation, transportation, education, or a related field. 

Licenses: Must possess and maintain a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.  Possession of and ability to maintain a valid first aid certificate. Possession of and ability to maintain a valid CPR certificate. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Vision adequate to read and supervise program participants; ability to bend, stoop, or crouch, and have enough physical stamina to lift and carry up to 30 pounds; mobility to move tables and chairs for room setup and to assist in the mobility of a variety of clients. Speak clearly and understandably.
