The Position

The Public Works Maintenance Leadworker performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of sewer infrastructure, road ways, sidewalks, and storm conveyance system. The Leadworker assigns and participates in the work of maintenance crews, operates power driven equipment, and performs related work as required.   This position is responsible for lead supervision of a sewer, street, storm or traffic safety maintenance field crew. Working in close partnership with the Public Works Operations Manager, you will help shape the future of Berkeley’s diverse and highly visible municipal fleet.

The Equipment Maintenance Division includes 14 full-time technicians and two supervisors, and the Equipment Superintendent is directly accountable for ensuring safe, efficient, and fiscally responsible fleet operations. This role offers the opportunity to lead and innovate while managing two repair facilities and overseeing a fleet of more than 570 vehicles and equipment assets, including light-duty vehicles, on- and off-road heavy equipment, refuse trucks, generators, and emergency vehicles.

A key focus of this position is advancing the City’s fleet electrification and clean transportation initiatives, including navigating California’s Advanced Clean Fleets regulations and collaborating with Engineering to plan and build the required charging infrastructure. You will work closely with user departments—primarily Police, Fire, Parks, Public Works, and the Zero Waste Division—to ensure the right equipment is procured, maintained, and deployed, while providing clear and actionable reporting on fleet condition, utilization, and lifecycle costs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

EDUCATION
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Additional coursework in vehicle and equipment maintenance, public or business administration, or related areas is preferred.

EXPERIENCE
Seven years of increasingly responsible equipment maintenance experience at the journey level or above which includes a minimum of three years supervision at a level equivalent to or above the Mechanic Supervisor class.

Additional coursework in vehicle and equipment maintenance, public or business administration, or related areas may be substituted for the non-supervisory experience, on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

The County of San Mateo is seeking a capable and multifaceted Assistant Director to assist the Director of the Family Justice Center with strategic planning, program development, and management of the County’s new Center. 

Under the Leadership of the Family Justice Center Director, the County is working with community partners and stakeholders to develop a one-stop holistic service and support center for families and survivors of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and other forms of abuse. The mission of the Center is to support survivors and their families by creating a single destination to receive crucial services and support. 

The San Mateo County Family Justice Center is a County-run multi-agency, multi-disciplinary service center where both public and private partner agencies assign staff on a full-time or part-time basis to provide services from one location. The Center’s focus will be on reducing the number of times survivors tell their story, reducing the number of places they must go for help, and through active collaboration with community-based organizations, increasing the quality of services and support they receive.

This is an opportunity for a committed public servant with extensive program management experience to successfully navigate the opportunities and challenges in developing and building new programs, collaborations, and a space that achieves the County’s goal of providing comprehensive, wrap-around services to victims of violence. The Assistant Director will be instrumental in carrying out the vision and goals by working alongside the Director.

Examples Of Duties

As the Assistant Director, you will have the opportunity to:

• Participate in the planning process to establish the Center which is modeled after successful Family Justice Centers across the country.
• Join in the effort to establish interagency collaborations.
• Engage with survivors to gather input and feedback that will inform the development and operation of the Family Justice Center, ensuring that their experiences and needs shape the center’s services and policies.
• Assist in facilitating focus groups and conducting best practice research as needed.

• Provide oversight for the program budget that ensures the accomplishment of program and service objectives within budget restrictions.

Qualifications

The City of Santa Clara is looking to fill multiple As-Needed- Temporary Employee positions to support the Annual Cleanup Campaign. Successful incumbents will be assigned to work as ground crews shoving, sweeping, and lifting up to 50lbs of debris left by Santa Clara residents.

The Position: 

In this temporary employment opportunity, you will gain valuable experience working with the public and demonstrate teamwork amongst your peers as you become part of a dedicated crew.

A mandatory paid orientation is tentatively scheduled for April, 2026, where employees will receive training, safety boots, and the necessary equipment to perform the job. This position will work from 6:45am-4:15pm, 40-45 hours a week, Monday-Friday between April 27, 2026 - May 22, 2026. 

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

The Position

The work of the Forensic Interviewer is an integral part of the services the Center offers.  Under the general direction of the Director of the Family Justice Center, the Forensic Interviewer conducts neutral, legally sound, developmentally and culturally appropriate, and trauma-informed interviews of children, teens, and vulnerable adults who are victims or witnesses to child abuse or neglect, violence, exploitation, or other crimes referred to San Mateo County’s Child Advocacy Center (CAC).  

Using nationally recognized protocols, the Forensic Interviewer gathers accurate and developmentally appropriate information while minimizing re-traumatization. Interviews are structured to support criminal investigations and may be used as evidence in court.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT), the Forensic Interviewer collaborates closely with law enforcement, child protective services, prosecutors, and advocates to ensure a coordinated, victim-centered response. The Forensic Interviewer is also responsible for thorough documentation and may provide expert testimony in legal proceedings. The role is essential in bridging the needs of the justice system with the safety and well-being of victims.  In addition to conducting interviews, the Forensic Interviewer will also attend regular peer reviews, monthly case reviews, and other meetings and trainings as required.

This is an opportunity for a committed public servant with extensive experience to support some of the County’s most vulnerable residents.  This position requires bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.

Candidates may have more experience in some areas than others, but successful hires will have at least five years of experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment with Child Protective Services, Law Enforcement, or Human or Social Services and demonstrate these core competencies:

The City of Burlingame's Public Works Department is accepting applications for the positions of Street Maintenance & Sewer Collection System Operator Trainee/Water System Operator Trainee (formerly Maintenance Worker I)

DEFINITION

Under close supervision, performs a variety of routine, heavy labor and unskilled manual tasks; learns to perform the more skilled tasks of the assigned division; and operates motorized equipment in a training capacity.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level class for Water System Operator and Street Maintenance & Sewer Collection System Operator positions in both the Water and Street, Sewer & Downtown Divisions.  Employees hired in either of these positions may reasonably expect promotion to the Water System Operator or Street Maintenance & Sewer Collection System Operator classes upon completion of one year's satisfactory service, completion of probation, and for the Streets, Storm Drains and Sewer Divisions, obtaining a class B driver’s license, passing a CWEA Grade 1 test, and for the Water Division, passing a DHS Grade D-1 test.

Street, Sewer & Downtown Division

Essential Duties:

Works with the following crews: Sign and Paint Crew; Paving Crew; Pothole Crew; Service Repair Crew; Pump Station Maintenance and Repair Crew; Sweeper Pile Crew; Sewer Rodder Crew and Hydro Jet Crew. Assists in laying pipe and sewer lines; sweeps and cleans roadsides, gutters, curbs, culverts, catch basins and other drainage structures; removes debris and undergrowth; assists in setting forms and mixing and pouring concrete; assists in raking, smoothing and tamping repaired patches; assists in the maintenance of mechanical equipment; assists in the layout of traffic patterns on streets and in the operation of painting equipment; cleans mechanical equipment and basic tools used on the job. Assists in maneuvering and driving hydro-jet truck and other equipment associated with this operation. Assists in preventative maintenance and unblocking of sewers using mechanical and hydro-jetting.

Other Duties: Serves as flag person when working in traffic and works in confined spaces.

Water Division

Essential Duties:

Assists in laying pipe and water lines; assists in making taps and connections to mains; assists in the maintenance of mechanical equipment; cleans mechanical equipment and maintains basic tools used on the job.

Other Duties: Serve as flag person when working in traffic; read water meters and assist water service worker; work in confined spaces.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)     

Knowledge of: 

Uses and purposes of designated hand tools employed in basic laboring work, safety precautions and practices, basic math and sufficient English to follow instructions and learn to write work reports.

Ability to:

Learn safety practices necessary in working on public thoroughfares; learn geography of the city; read and interpret plans and city block book maps; take notes and instructions and complete them accordingly; learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled duties in the assigned division. 

Skills: 

Ability to safely and efficiently use air and hand tools, hydraulic tools, jackhammers, and power and automotive equipment in a training capacity.

License: 

Possession of a valid Class C driver's license issued by the DMV, and the ability to obtain a Class B driver's license upon the end of a one-year probationary period.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Street, Sewer & Downtown Division

Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects for short distances weighing up to ninety (90) pounds, including manhole covers; perform the pulling, pushing, twisting and bending needed for rodding sewer; work outdoors in adverse weather; perform pick and shovel work in digging, widening and backfilling; assist in the cleaning of sewers which includes working in raw sewage.

Ability to stand and walk for considerable periods of time; twist the upper body; perform moderate amounts of crouching, stooping, and squatting. Ability to climb ladders and to climb into confined spaces; to work weekends and evenings as necessary, and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above job duties, and use of proper safety and hearing equipment when using noisy and dangerous equipment.

Water Division

Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects for short distances weighing up to 90-pounds including large meter box covers; climb ladders; perform moderate amounts of crouching, squatting and stooping; perform pulling, twisting and bending; work outdoors in adverse weather; perform pick and shovel work in digging, widening and backfilling.

Ability to stand and walk for considerable periods of time; twist the upper body; perform moderate amounts of crouching, stooping, and squatting. Ability to climb ladders and to climb into confined spaces; to work weekends and evenings as necessary, and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above job duties, and use of proper safety and hearing equipment when using noisy and dangerous equipment.

Under the general supervision of the Planning and Building Director, the Building Inspector I/II is responsible for inspecting construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable building codes and regulations. This role involves conducting all residential, resale and commercial inspections, investigating complaints, providing technical guidance to applicants, coordinating with external agencies, time limits of completion enforcement and assisting at the building counter. The position requires a high level of independence and discretion.

Summary
Under general supervision, assists in organizing, leading and conducting recreational programs and provides highly responsible and technical professional staff assistance in developing and conducting specialized recreational programs; and performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Plans, schedules, assigns, supervises and participates in a recreation unit of the District typically consisting of part-time employees; organizes and conducts programs in program areas such as fine and performing arts, sports, outdoor activities, therapeutics and inclusion; interprets and communicates District policies to staff and ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and District safety regulations; interviews and participates in selecting new staff; establishes performance requirements; regularly monitors, evaluates and addresses performance.
• Contributes to the development of and monitors performance against the program budget; approves purchases and other expenditures in accordance with District policies and procedures.
• Identi­fies, contacts, selects and prepares documents for contract instructors; provides first-level approval and processes contract invoices.
• Prepares written public correspondence, speaks to school and community groups and promotes participation in scheduled activities through marketing plans and outreach efforts.
• Instructs participants in various athletic and recreational activities.
• Coordinates and participates in equipment and vendor selection, physical setup for special activities and the issuing and collecting of materials.
• Assists supervisor with the research, development, enhancement and implementation of new and existing services and programming; assists in monitoring program effective­ness.
• Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports on participation, equipment and facility use.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• May be required to drive a District or personal vehicle.
• May coordinate activities and meetings of the Community Advisory Council.
• Exempt employees may be required to work nights and weekends.  
• Participates during disasters or when emergency response is needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfac­torily. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skill and/or ability listed below is qualifying.

Education/Experience: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: a bachelor’s degree with emphasis in recreation or a closely related field; and two years of group recreational activity leadership experience including supervisory, public relations or marketing skills; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

As assigned to Therapeutic Recreation Unit, preferred degree in Therapeutic Recreation and/or two years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabili­ties, prefer­ably with ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis); and the ability to learn/imple­ment applicable laws and inclusion methods and practices. Knowledge of principles and techniques pertaining to the specialized program activities and program marketing and evaluation methods; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents in area of expertise, technical proce­dures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence and proce­dure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form. Ability to present information and respond to questions. Ability to speak Spanish is desirable.

Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages and costs. Ability to determine cost of contractors and provide budget input.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions provided in written or oral form. Ability to exercise a high degree of independent judgment.

Certificates and Licenses: 

• First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment with ability to maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of employment.
• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance.
• Therapeutics program requires a California Commercial Class C Driver License within six months of employment.
• Aquatics program requires a Certified Pool Operator’s certification or Aquatic Facility Operator’s certification within six months of employment as well as Life­guard training, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer and American Red Cross Water Safety instructor certificates.
• All full-time candidates require satisfactory completion of a pre-employment functional capacity examination.
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
• Proof of negative TB skin test.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Typically supervises part-time employees in the recreation department, including performance evaluations. The number of part-time employees supervised varies depending on unit assignment.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a community center or office environment subject to frequent public contact and interruption and to intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion. Exposure to hazardous conditions in the environment will vary depending on unit assigned. The employee may work nights and weekends.

If assigned to the Sports/Aquatics or Therapeutics Unit, the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and risk of electrical shock.

Examination:  Candidate selection will be based on competitive examinations.  Test content will be related to the job.  A driver license will be requested for identification and admission to the testing area.  If there is more than one part to an examination, candidates must pass each part.  Candidates with passing scores will be asked to compete in successive parts of the examination.

• Written Test/Practical Exercise:  A written test and a practical exercise may be used, in addition to the appraisal interview.
• Appraisal Interview:  A job related appraisal interview will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating candidates’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in relation to those factors which job analysis has determined to be essential for successful performance of the job.
• After the Appraisal Interview, the top candidates will be invited to a staff interview.
