AFTER SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICES ASSISTANT (ASCSA) I/II/III

DEFINITION: Under supervision, staff will perform duties in our After School Program consisting of an educational, enrichment and recreational environment. Work schedule will NOT exceed 28 hours per week; schedule is generally 11 am – 6 pm (varies from site to site), Monday through Friday and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Qualified applicants will be invited to test or asked to provide official documentation to verify they meet the educational requirements.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE FOR ASCSA I:

• Ability to successfully lead a program with up to 5 additional staff members and up to 100 youth in attendance daily; Knowledge of after school program best practices and ability to implement them appropriately.
• Ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with school site personnel, staff, participants, and parents regarding program policies and procedures. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The incumbent must have the ability to:

• Work with students in reading, spelling, mathematics, and other subjects, assist with computer skills: Assist in supervising and organizing recreation activities; distribute, monitor, and maintain equipment/supplies.
• Assist in monitoring program compliance with laws, rules, and regulations; Supervise children/participants at park site or facility; lead group activities; Recommend and/or assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement policies and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged standing, sitting, walking on level or unleveled and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more. This position requires near and far vision for reading written documents and in the observation of participants during activities. POSITION INFORMATION

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is responsible for planning and implementing curriculum and instructional activities for Youth Services programs and ensuring a safe environment for participants.  Incumbents in this classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned program area.  Incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver services.  Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements.  This classification is distinguished from the Youth Services Coordinator in that the latter has overall administrative and operational responsibility for Youth Services programs and services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels.  May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions.  May be exposed to communicable illnesses, blood, and body fluids.  Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess:  mobility to perform medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.  The classification supports indoor and outdoor programs requiring frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, or tools and equipment used in assigned program area.  Program activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• Associate’s degree in early childhood education and six units in administration and supervision, or a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, child development, human development, liberal studies or a related field with nine units in early childhood education and six units in administration and supervision;

AND

• Three years of relevant experience working in a childcare facility, with at least one year in a lead or assistant lead capacity.

The City of Salinas Public Library is looking for a part-time, benefited Literacy Specialist with a passion for building community and nurturing lifelong learning through adult literacy programs, supported by a dynamic group of volunteers and staff. Under the supervision of the Adult Services Senior Librarian, the Literacy Specialist will be responsible for helping support a variety of adult and family literacy programs. One area of focus will include expanding the training for new volunteers in the Adult Literacy Program as well as the professional development opportunities and support for current Adult Literacy volunteers. The Literacy Specialist will help identify resources and materials for use by volunteers in teaching, tutoring and assisting with Learners and classes, and more.

• Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment
• Ability to operate standard office equipment including a computer and assigned software

• Ability to utilize a computer to input data, maintain automated records, and generate computerized reports

Examination Process:  The examination process for this classification will consist of:

1.  A review of application materials, including supplemental questionnaire, for education, training, experience, completeness, and accuracy
2.  A written examination (anticipated date- April 9, 2019)
3.  An oral board examination (anticipated date- April 18, 2019)

     Only the highest qualified candidates will be invited to attend the examinations.

     Applicants will be notified of screening and examination results by e-mail or letter.
