The Deputy Probation Officer I/II/III position in the Probation Department will investigate cases of juvenile delinquency or dependency and adult applicants for probation; supervise and counsel juveniles and adults on probation; prepares reports and recommendations for court. Provides professional casework services to adult and juvenile offenders involving the referral, supervision and rehabilitation of juveniles and adults on probation; and provides advocacy and related services to victims of crimes. The Deputy Probation Officer III is the advanced journey level position in the class. This position is scheduled for forty (40) hours per week. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Prepares and presents reports and recommendations regarding juveniles and adults for the Superior Court.
• Investigates violations of the law by juveniles and adults, and prepares a variety of reports to the court on individuals under the jurisdiction of the court.
• Analyzes and uses information gathered by interviewing the accused and others involved in a case to assess client needs; develops a supervision plan designed to achieve desired behavioral changes; prepares progress reports.
• Arrests juvenile/adult probationers, or makes arrangements through law enforcement agencies for the arrest of juvenile/adult probationers who violate the law or terms of probation; physically restrains juvenile/adult probationers when necessary.
• Makes financial arrangements for the collection and distribution of fines, restitution and other payments.

The County Executive’s Office seeks qualified candidates for the position of Outreach and Enforcement Associate in the Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement.

Launched in July 2025, the Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement (OLSE) promotes fair labor practices throughout San Mateo County. OLSE’s core functions include conducting outreach and education to workers and employers within San Mateo County about their rights and obligations in the workplace and enforcing labor standards that protect San Mateo County workers through coordinated investigations and efforts to secure compliance.

THE POSITION

Reporting to the Labor Standards Manager, the Outreach and Enforcement Associate will lead OLSE’s community outreach and engagement work, support civil investigations and enforcement actions, and manage projects to support OLSE’s implementation. Spanish fluency is required for this position. 

The Outreach and Enforcement Associate’s key responsibilities will include:

• Outreach and Community Engagement:
  • Plan and implement culturally and linguistically appropriate labor standards outreach campaigns targeting low-wage workers and their employers, prioritizing outreach consistent with geographic and industry priorities, with buy-in from key stakeholders. 
  • Execute a wide range of outreach activities, including mass mailings, door-to-door canvassing, flyering, tabling, presentations, workshops, and events.
  • Deliver presentations to and facilitate discussions with low-wage workers and small businesses, providing clarity on workplace rights and resources available to support labor compliance.
  • Develop and maintain educational materials that present information responsive to community need in an accurate, accessible, and engaging manner.
  • Build partnerships and cooperative working relationships with County departments and various community, public, and regulatory organizations.

• Enforcement Support and Intake Coordination:
  • Receive and respond to complaints, inquiries, and requests for support from workers, employers, and members of the public, implementing OLSE’s intake procedures and best practices for ensuring all stakeholders who contact OLSE receive clear, helpful, in-language, and timely information and complaints are investigated promptly.
  • Conduct initial interviews with workers seeking OLSE assistance by phone and in-person; identify worker priorities and make recommendations for appropriate next steps.
  • As assigned, and under supervision, conduct investigations of potential violations of laws within OLSE’s jurisdiction, including interviewing workers, engaging with employers, calculating damages, and drafting investigation reports.

• Project Management:
  • Support the development and implementation of OLSE workflows and processes, including the implementation of a case management database.
  • Coordinate contract solicitations and assist with the maintenance and monitoring of OLSE contracts.
  • Prepare reports on OLSE activities and outcomes.

Additional duties include but are not limited to:

• Assist in developing goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards. 
• Analyze programmatic practices and procedures and make recommendations for organizational, operational, policy, and procedural improvements.
• Conduct needs analyses, feasibility studies, and evaluations.
• Support Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement programs and projects.
• Continuously monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of operations and service delivery methods and procedures to maximize funding and minimize costs. 
• Develop, summarize, and maintain administrative and fiscal records.
• Prepare comprehensive technical reports, identify alternatives, and make and justify recommendations.
• Conduct special research projects and financial analyses for countywide programs and usage, produce findings and recommendations, and prepare related reports.
• Represent the Office in interdepartmental, community, and professional meetings and confer and coordinate with other County staff on a wide variety of administrative analyses and planning issues.
• Ensure compliance with Federal, State, County, and funding agency regulatory and reporting requirements and applicable laws, regulations, and professional practices.
• Prepare and submit Board of Supervisor agenda reports and various other commission, committee, and staff reports, resolutions, ordinances, and correspondence regarding assigned activities.
• Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and review publications and related materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in labor standards, labor laws, and enforcement.
• Communicate orally, in writing, or through graphic representations and statistical summaries with colleagues, managers, employees, the public, organized employee groups, and representatives of various organizations.
• Participate, as requested, in selecting, training, motivating, and evaluating assigned staff and interns; direct the work activities of assigned staff; prioritize and coordinate work assignments; provide or coordinate staff training; review work for accuracy; and work with employees to correct deficiencies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The Public Works Program Manager leads and supports a diverse team of professional, technical, and administrative staff while overseeing a key functional area within the Public Works Department. This role plays a critical part in planning, coordinating, and delivering high-quality public services that positively impact the community. The Program Manager receives direction from the Public Works Director or designee and exercises direct supervision over professional, technical, and clerical staff, ensuring work is completed efficiently, collaboratively, and in alignment with departmental goals and regulatory requirements.

• Assists in the formulation and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.
• Coordinates division activities with those of other departments, divisions, sections and outside agencies and organizations.
• Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives for department programs establishes schedules and methods for services; implements department policies and procedures.
• Participates in the preparation and administration of grants.
• Responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints related to assigned areas of responsibility.
• Performs general administrative work as necessary, including preparing reports and correspondence, reviewing correspondence, copying and filing documents, entering computer data and preparing spreadsheets, etc.

This position is a working level civilian class in law enforcement, performing a variety of        non-sworn duties in support of law enforcement activities.  Incumbents may perform civil, code enforcement, and criminal services including a variety of routine to more complex non-sworn law enforcement and crime prevention work including patrolling assigned areas, answering calls for service and complaints, serving civil papers, providing court room security; and enforcing local ordinances related to public safety and welfare.  As a County Services Officer he/she will enforce Division 14 of the Agricultural Code of the State of California and enforce the County ordinance governing the animal and rabies control program, in an effort to maintain public safety and welfare.  This position is scheduled for forty (40) hours per week.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Process and serve documents involved in civil actions including summons, complaints, claims of plaintiffs and orders; declarations and orders of examinations, Notice of Entries of Judgments, civil and criminal subpoenas, Notice to Vacate Rental Premise and process writs of execution including the preparation of orders for wage garnishment. Works with other law enforcement agencies in matters related to the investigation of crimes and apprehension of offenders.

The Auditor-Controller Manager is distinguished by the level of responsibility of managing multiple components of accounting, administrative and auditing systems, fiscal staff development, and program analysis. This position is scheduled for forty (40) hours per week. This recruitment may be used to establish a list to fill future vacancies for the next six (6) months.

Plans, develops, and evaluates Auditor-Controller Division’s goals, objectives, policies and procedures; interprets laws and regulations; develops systems and standards for program evaluation; assures the Auditor-Controller Division’s activities follow all applicable laws, policies and regulations. These positions are returning to the fire district in 2025, and we’ll be hiring three people to operate the chipping crew.  This position is expected to be active from approximately May through November.  The actual start and end dates will be dependent on weather and snow conditions and may be extended beyond 6 months, but no more than 9 months from the employment start date.  The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies.  

The Chipping Crew Members work under the direct supervision of the Division Chief of Fire and Life Safety or their designee.  

The primary purpose of this crew is to operate a residential chipping program for the local community. This includes responding to chipping requests, traveling to those addresses with a truck and chipper, chipping the material, ensuring a clean site upon leaving, potentially hauling and dumping the material at a temporary holding site, assisting with loading, and ensuring activities are adequately tracked. The applicant must be comfortable working in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions and lifting objects frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.  Chipping crew members will also assist with community workdays utilizing the truck and chipper or assisting with cutting and hauling combustible materials and filling green waste dumpsters.
