The City of Union City’s Community and Recreation Services Department is seeking passionate, motivated, and certified fitness professionals to join the Mark Green Sports Center (MGSC) team as Group Exercise Instructors and/or Personal Trainers. This position supports the City’s mission to promote health, wellness, and community engagement through high-quality fitness programs. Trainers and instructors work in a supportive, community-based environment — with no commission-based quotas or sales pressure. Instead, our Fitness Coordinator assists in client promotion, class opportunities, and professional growth through internal referrals and member engagement. Group Exercise Instructors may join our substitute roster and may be assigned to teach classes aligned with their certification and experience as openings arise.

The Position

The Community Services Supervisor is responsible for all aspects of direct coordination and supervision of one or more significant program areas within one of the Community Services Division’s major program Sections, and for assisting the Community Services Section Manager with the overall direction and supervision of the Section. Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Supervise, schedule, train, and evaluate subordinate personnel and volunteers
• Coordinate, promote, implement and evaluate recreation and human services activities as assigned
• Organize and schedule Citywide activities in assigned area of responsibility
• Prepare events’ publicity, including flyers and news releases
• Maintain close contact with school officials, community groups and citizens regarding program implementation
• Perform a variety of office related functions, including the processing of payroll data, registration fees, activity reports, and related records
• Assist in preparing and administering the program budget
• Coordinate and supervise contracts for specialized contractual services
• Participate in teaching recreation classes
• Organize, coordinate, and encourage the formation of clubs, teams, leagues, special events, and specialized programs and services
• Arrange for, and schedule, facilities, transportation, and appropriate activity supervision
• Direct facility operations, including responsibility for the use and maintenance of the facilities.

The Community Services Supervisor receives general supervision from the Community Services Section Manager or other higher level department personnel and exercises direct supervision over full-time and part-time employees, volunteers, clerical, and custodial personnel.

Individuals must be able to officiate and control games, events, and competitions in a confident, appropriate manner. Ensure all participants understand and comply with game rules and assess penalties when needed. Make game calls with confidence and knowledge of league rules. Keep track of event start times, and start or stop play as necessary. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBITIES:

• Assist in ensuring that each day is well organized prior to the start time.
• Communicate with parents and players.
• Assist in ensuring that all games begin and end on time.
• Set up and clean up all equipment at the end of games and make sure it is placed in its proper location.
• Ensure that all instructions are carried with honesty, care, respect, and responsibility.
• Build and maintain close and positive relationships with participants and parents.
• Maintain a safe environment at all times.

DEFINITION:

The Music Instructor is responsible for providing quality music instruction to participants of varying skill levels in a positive and engaging environment. This position requires strong knowledge of music techniques and the ability to plan and deliver lessons that meet individual participants’ needs. The instructor will plan, prepare, and implement music lessons tailored to each participant’s abilities and goals, teaching music theory, aural skills, and practical techniques to individuals and groups. They will also prepare participants for performances or showcases as part of the program, select and acquire appropriate teaching materials and resources, and motivate participants to achieve continuous progress. In addition, the Music Instructor will communicate effectively with recreation staff and parents/caregivers regarding schedules, progress, and participant needs, assess participants’ abilities, provide constructive feedback, and maintain progress records. Delivering excellent customer service and representing the City in a professional and positive manner are essential aspects of this role. The ideal candidate will be patient, enthusiastic, and dedicated to fostering a supportive learning environment where participants can grow both musically and personally.

Strong attention to grant-related requirements and food safety compliance is essential to maintaining program excellence and accountability.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a valid State of California driver’s license and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This position requires the ability to work independently while receiving direction from a supervisor, as well as the capacity to train, oversee, and collaborate effectively with volunteers and older adults. Strong attention to detail is essential, including the ability to maintain accurate records and submit documentation as required. Proficiency with computers, including experience using Microsoft Word and Excel, is required. Upon hire, the candidate must successfully obtain a State Food Handler Safety Certificate and pass all required background checks. A bilingual pay differential may be available for candidates fluent in identified languages.  Must be available Monday-Friday 10:00am-2:00pm.

Recreation Program Specialist Example Duties:

• Follow reservation protocol/procedure for patrons.
• Review menu provided by caterer, submit nutritional component breakdown to County for grant compliance, and prepare flyers for patron.
• Submit documentation/information associated with County nutrition grant to supervisor.
• Schedule and implement nutritional education for seniors and in-service training for staff and volunteers.
• Serve as liaison with caterer, grant provider and staff/volunteers.
• Implement food safety practices as outlined by the Health Department.
• Prior nutrition experience is desired, but not required. Training will be provided.

The Energy Department is looking to fill two (2) Part-Time Marketing and Communications Graduate Student Intern (Unclassified) position.

The Marketing and Communications Intern’s primary responsibility will be to assist SJCE with day-to-day communications and improving customer experiences. Projects could include:

• Help maintain and expand SJCE’s program webpages (electric vehicles, solar and storage, electric homes, etc.)
• Assist with developing online tools to help customers navigate the electric vehicles, home electrification, and rooftop solar and increase adoption.
• Write clear and engaging content for web pages, blogs, articles, emails, social media and marketing materials.
• Research, coordinate, and attend community events to increase awareness of SJCE programs and services, particularly in diverse communities. Pitch community events for the marketing team to attend, prepare collateral and materials for events, and conduct outreach at events. The intern may be asked to develop an interactive game or activity for SJCE’s event booth.
• Organize SJCE’s marketing collateral and develop a library of materials that is visible and accessible for department staff and the public.
• Assist with noticing for SJCE programs and improve and streamline processes. This includes drafting letters and emails, developing and refining key messaging, and reviewing data to measure the effectiveness of communications.
• Become a cheerleader for SJCE and CCAs! Connect with colleagues in the field and develop an understanding of industry trends and initiatives.

Additionally, this intern will help support SJCE’s ongoing work, including attending meetings, developing marketing collateral, and collecting and analyzing data to improve customer experiences.

Pay: Graduate Student Intern: $20.52-$30.30 per hour (unclassified, unbenefited) 
This salary range includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. The actual salary will be determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Work Schedule: During the academic year, interns are recommended to work 24-40 hours per week, with schedules determined collaboratively between the hiring manager and the intern based on student availability and project needs. During summer and winter breaks, interns may work up to 40 hours per week. 

 

Minimum Qualifications  

 

Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of a Bachelor's Degree and current
enrollment in a Masters degree program from an accredited college or university in business or public administration
or closely related field.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the state of California may be required in performing job duties.

Desired skills:

The Pool Manager will be expected to schedule Lifeguards to work as well as oversee the Lifeguards. The Pool Manager must also be able to resolve confrontations from citizens if not to direct them to the next person in the chain of command. Performs other duties as assigned.

This position is established for 28 hours a week, but will vary depending on programming needs, and will be working weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
