Position Duties

The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) full-time Parks Manager vacancy in the Parks Division at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo.

The total salary range for the Parks Manager classification is $143,860.08 - $175,309.68 annually. 

This salary range includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience. 

The City of San José’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department (PRNS) is seeking an innovative and results-driven Parks Manager to lead Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ) — the City’s flagship destination known for its blend of family recreation, wildlife conservation, and environmental education. 

The Parks Manager serves as the General Manager for Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ), providing strategic leadership and operational oversight for all facets of the park and zoo. This includes animal care and welfare, rides and attractions, entertainment programs, maintenance, guest services, food and beverage, business operations, education, and conservation programming. The position ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality experiences for guests, animals and staff while advancing the City’s goals of equity, stewardship, and sustainability. 
 

Key Responsibilities

Direct daily operations of HHPZ, including animal care, maintenance, attractions, guest services, security and public programming.  Oversee business operations such as admissions, concessions, memberships, and revenue programs to ensure fiscal sustainability and continuous improvement.  Lead and develop a diverse team of staff and supervisors, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation.  Develop and manage operating and capital budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships.  Plan and implement capital improvement projects, including animal exhibit renovations, infrastructure upgrades, and facility enhancements.

PROGRAM LEADER (SPORTS AND FITNESS)

Salary Range: $17.37 to $23.15/hour, DOE

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefitted position; 15-20 hours per week (not to exceed 950 hours per calendar year); predominantly afternoon/evening schedule, some weekends.

DEFINITION
The Town seeks gym monitors, scorekeepers, and leaders for the Junior Warriors youth basketball program. Responsibilities focus on monitoring basketball practices and games for kindergarten-aged through middle school participants. Basketball knowledge is preferred but not required. All staff will be cross-trained to assist with multiple aspects of the program, including refereeing younger age groups (K–3rd grade) and scorekeeping/timekeeping for older age groups. CPR/FA certification is recommended but not required.
 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Program Leader receives supervision from the Program Coordinator and/or Program Assistant.
 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Essential duties may include, but are not limited to:
•Gym monitoring for practices and games, including opening the gym, setting up and lowering hoops, and cleaning up.
•Refereeing for younger age groups (K–3rd grade).
•Scorekeeping and timekeeping for older age groups.
•Completing program score sheets, reports, and timesheets according to deadlines.
•Attending monthly staff meetings.
•Various tasks related to the implementation of youth basketball programs.
 

QUALIFICATIONS

About Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ): This is a 16-acre amusement park and Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo located in San José, California. HHPZ is open year-round catering to families with children. It operates nine amusement park rides, showcases various endangered species, and operates one of the oldest classical puppet theaters in California, as well as offering many other playgrounds and attractions emphasizing play and imagination in a natural conservation setting. 

The Department is currently recruiting to fill one full-time benefited Zoo Keeper position at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT AND POSITION

The Police Records Technician I (PRT) plays a critical role in supporting the administrative functions of the department. Under the direct supervision of the Police Records Supervisor, and under the functional supervision of the Police Captain, this position performs a wide range of clerical/administrative duties that require accuracy, efficiency, and confidentiality. PRTs are essential team members who help ensure accurate documentation, record management and information flow that support frontline operations, and public safety efforts. DEFINITION

The Recreation Aide I is the entry level class and is responsible for performing less complex assignments within an established procedural framework where there are minimal consequences of error. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Recreation Aide II by the performance of more routine, repetitive and less complex assignments.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

Receives supervision from administrative and/or management staff. Incumbents of this class do not routinely exercise supervision but those at the higher levels may be asked to supervise from time to time but not on a consistent basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Include but are not limited to the following)

• Assist with the following: set-up and tear down of program equipment, preparation of playing fields and routine facility maintenance.
• Keep statistics and accurate score for basketball, softball, flag football, soccer, and volleyball.
• Collect and record the team's lineups and assist officials during the game with specific rules and policies.
• Officiate adult and youth volleyball, youth basketball, and youth football games.
• Uphold the rules of play and code of conduct.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, provide recreational and educational instruction and activities, social development, guidance and care for preschool and elementary age children by leading and assisting in the selection and coordination of a variety of activities and curriculum at a childcare site.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Child Care Lead Teacher is the lead teacher in the classroom.  Child Care Lead Teachers may also be asked to temporarily oversee a school site when a Site Coordinator is offsite.  If a situation arises where a Site Supervisor is unavailable for an extended period of time a Child Care Lead Teacher with a Site Supervisor Permit will be asked to act as a temporary Site Supervisor.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

General supervision is provided by the Child Care Site Coordinator. Child Care Lead Teacher  supervises the classrooms to which they are assigned, including Child Care Aides, Associate Teachers, Teachers, and Full-time Teachers that are assigned to their programs.

Summary: 
 Under general supervision, the Courier makes pickup and delivery of District inter-office mail, supplies, and equipment in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operate a District vehicle to pick up and deliver items from all District facilities on a daily basis
• Pick up the daily deposit from community centers and ensure its safe delivery to accounting
• Move transportable equipment among district locations as requested
• Prepare outgoing mail, operate postage machine, and maintain records of postage used
• Maintain copy room supply inventory; submit office supply requisitions as needed
• Organize supplies and tidy copy room storage cabinets and workspaces

Qualifications:

THE POSITION 

The City of South San Francisco seeks customer service-oriented individuals to join the Community Resource Team at the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center. This position is shared between the Library Department and Parks and Recreation Department and works under the direction of the Community Resource Analyst. The Community Resource Clerk will typically be stationed at the lobby desks on the first and second floors of the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center at 901 Civic Campus Way in South San Francisco, however, may temporarily be assigned to other sites, or to represent the departments at special events. This position will provide a welcoming presence by greeting members of the public and responding to visitor inquiries to assist with wayfinding in the facility and sharing information about activities in the building as well as city and other local community resources.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal Community Resource Clerk possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills and will be comfortable working in a diverse community setting, providing customer service to community members of various ages, ethnicities, and abilities.  Candidates with bilingual skills are strongly encouraged to apply. • Registers participants in programs and assists patrons with Library or Parks and Recreation account inquiries.

• Maintain the posting of current promotional materials, such as flyers, brochures, guides, and other printed materials.

Experience: Minimum of 18 years of age. One year of paid or unpaid work experience involving customer service.

GENERAL INFO 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Leader I/II positions provide essential support to recreation programs and services by performing custodial tasks, event setup and teardown, program support, and minor maintenance duties at various facilities, including parks and community centers. This temporary, part-time position requires working an average of 15 to 20 hours per week, but no more than 999 hours per fiscal year total. The roles involve ensuring the facilities are clean, safe, and operational while delivering excellent customer service. Performs other duties as assigned.

UNIVERSAL POSITION DUTIES (Illustrative purposes only) 

• Organize, inventory, and maintain facility materials and equipment. 
• Supervise teams/groups of other program staff or volunteers under the direction of Supervisor. 
• Assist in organizing and supervising recreational programs in any one or more of the following areas: children, adults, senior citizens, and participants with special needs at playgrounds, community centers, and other recreational areas. 
• Open, close, and secure facilities, including locking gates and setting alarms. 
• Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment according to event/program requirements. 
• Perform light maintenance and cleaning tasks to ensure facility safety and upkeep. 
• Enforce policies, maintain discipline, and provide customer service to patrons. 
• Monitor and report facility issues and potential hazards. 
• Assist with special events and activities as needed. 
• Respond to and resolve patron inquiries and complaints. 
• Participate in safety training and emergency procedures. 
• Monitor facility rentals and provide customer service as needed. 
• Lift and move, routinely and regularly, up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifting and/or moving over 60 pounds. Duties also include repetitive pushing; pulling; crawling; climbing; and prolonged periods of standing, lifting above the shoulders, working off a ladder, manual dexterity, and maintaining good vision and hearing. 
• Perform other duties as assigned. 

SERVICE DESK (Illustrative purposes only) 

• Greet patrons, answer and direct calls, and provide information on programs, rentals, schedules, rules, and policies. 
• Open/close the facility and monitor for safety, cleanliness, and proper use. 
• Check daily facility schedules and rental setup requirements. 
• Use computer systems for data entry. 
• Assist patrons with registration processing and POS transactions. 
• Handle office tasks including mail distribution, shipments, and deliveries. 
• Support office inventory management for supplies and equipment. 
• Assist facility attendants and recreation programs as needed. 

FACILITY ATTENDANT (Illustrative purposes only) 

• Greet patrons, and provide information on programs, rentals, schedules, rules, and policies.

• Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment according to event/program requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Education and Experience 

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. This provision may be waived if applicant is under the age of 18.
• Two years of customer service or service in the recreation industry experience preferred

Skills and Abilities 

• Facility operations, customer service, basic event/program management, and safety practices. 
• Ability to use custodial and operational equipment, communicate effectively, and work independently. 

Special Requirements 

• Ability to obtain a current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. 
• Ability to obtain a current California Food Handler Card. 
• Ability to obtain a current Driver’s License and clean driving record is preferred. 

Tools and Equipment Used 

• Various hand tools and cleaning equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a recreation or community center facility. 
• Operation of city vehicle.
