Are you interested in gaining meaningful, hands-on experience in local government?

The City of Pacifica is excited to host approximately seven (7) Summer Interns across multiple departments. This program is designed to provide students with substantive project experience, professional mentorship, and exposure to the inner workings of municipal government. Unlike a general internship pool, each department will recruit for a specific opportunity aligned with its operational needs and professional focus. 

About the Program

The Summer Internship Program was developed in collaboration with the Next Generation Committee, sponsored by the City/County Managers Associations of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The program supports the development of emerging professionals and promotes careers in local government.

The Summer Internship Program is tentatively scheduled to run from June 15, 2026 through August 14, 2026 (8 weeks). End date may be adjusted based on the intern's schedule and availability.

Selected applicants will be invited to interview during a tentative window of March 23 – April 3, 2026, with flexibility as needed.

The City anticipates finalizing offers by April 24, 2026 to allow adequate time for summer scheduling and coordination. Internships are part-time (up to 25 hours per week), seasonal, at-will, and non-benefited positions.

About the Community Development/Planning Summer Intern Opportunity

The Community Development Department fosters a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable community through thoughtful planning, innovative development, and responsive public service. The department supports balanced growth, preservation of natural and cultural resources, and equitable access to housing, transportation, and economic opportunity. 

 

Comprised of the Building, Code Enforcement, and Planning Divisions – Community Development plays a central role in shaping Pacifica’s built environment and long-term vision. This internship is ideal for a student interested in urban planning, land use, sustainability, housing policy, or local government operations. Interns will gain hands-on experience supporting projects that directly influence how the community grows and evolves.

 

Responsibilities May Include (but Are Not Limited To):

• Assisting with research and analysis related to land use, zoning, and development projects
• Supporting review of planning applications and preparation of staff reports
• Assisting with data collection and documentation for housing, transportation, or sustainability initiatives
• Supporting Building Division efforts related to permit tracking, documentation, and public inquiries
• Assisting Code Enforcement staff with administrative case tracking and research
• Preparing public-facing materials related to development projects or community initiatives
• Attending Planning Commission or related public meetings to observe the local decision-making process
• Conducting research on best practices in planning, housing policy, or environmental sustainability

Education & Experience:

• Current undergraduate majoring in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Geography, Political Science, Architecture, Civil Engineering, or a related field
• Coursework in land use planning, sustainability, housing policy, public policy, or community development preferred
• Strong interest in local government and community planning
• Prior research, internship, or project experience related to planning, development, or public policy is desirable but not required

Preferred Skills & Knowledge:

• Understanding of basic land use and zoning concepts
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Ability to interpret and summarize technical information clearly
• Professional written and verbal communication skills
• Organizational skills and attention to detail
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with GIS or planning software is a plus

About the Administrative Services (ASD) Intern Opportunity

The Administrative Services Department (ASD) includes the City’s Finance, Information Technology (IT), and Human Resources (HR) divisions. Together, these divisions support the City’s internal operations by ensuring fiscal accountability, technological functionality, and effective workforce administration.

The ASD Intern will serve in a project management-focused role supporting departmental and cross-divisional initiatives. This internship is designed for a student who brings strong organizational skills, structured thinking, and demonstrated experience managing projects or coordinating complex assignments. The selected intern will assist with planning, tracking, documenting, and supporting implementation of strategic initiatives across ASD. With headquarters in San José, Valley Water provides water supply, enhances streams and watersheds through creek restoration and habitat protection, provides flood protection for homes, schools, businesses and roadways, and partners with other agencies to provide trails and open space for the community.

Valley Water manages 10 dams and surface water reservoirs, three water treatment plants, an advanced recycled water purification center, a state of-the-art water quality laboratory, nearly 400 acres of groundwater recharge ponds, and more than 275 miles of streams. Valley Water provides wholesale water and groundwater management services to local municipalities and private water retailers who deliver drinking water directly to nearly 2 million people in Santa Clara County that stretches 1,300 square miles and encompasses 15 cities and unincorporated areas.

The Staff Analyst position will support the Office of Civic Engagement in implementing the Safe, Clean Water Grants & Partnerships Program under Measure S. This position will be responsible for leading the implementation of the Refill Station Grant funding opportunity (Project F9 Key Performance Indicator #2), with oversight from the Community Benefits Program Administrator. 

The position will provide administrative and analytical support for the Grants & Partnerships Program, which includes the following tasks: application review and evaluation, drafting grant agreements, providing technical assistance to grantees, processing and validating invoice submissions, conducting grantee site visits and closeout tasks for completed projects, developing and writing memos and formal correspondence to grantees and management, tracking data and analytics for the grants program, maintaining the Fluxx grants management system, tracking grantee inquiries, among other duties as required. 

The Staff Analyst may participate in outreach and community engagement events/activities, which may sometimes require working at night and/or on the weekends. Additionally, all Valley Water employees are considered Disaster Service Workers and may be called on to report to an Emergency Operation Center during a disaster.

This position may require occasional visits to school campuses and must submit and pass a tuberculosis test and criminal background check.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Lead the implementation of all aspects of the bottle filling station funding opportunity – review and evaluate applications, draft grant agreements, provide technical assistance and coaching to prospective grantees, process invoices and reports, conduct grantee site visits and closeouts, track data and analytics, etc.
• Support the administration of the expanded Safe, Clean Water Grants & Partnerships Program – process and validate invoices, track data and analytics, maintain the Fluxx grants management system, track grantee inquiries, provide customer service to prospective grantees and grantees, etc.
• Support the outreach efforts for the Safe, Clean Water Grants & Partnerships Program – collect photo release forms, write social media posts, blog posts, participate in tabling events and trainings for prospective grantees and grantees, etc.
• General administrative, analytical and outreach support for the Office of Civic Engagement – other duties as assigned to support any/all program areas within the unit.

Ideal Experience:

• Three (3) years of experience handling a variety of administrative support and technical duties in grant management as a grant maker or grant seeker. 
• Experience working with non-profits and/or other public agencies.
• Preparing reports, memos, and other written content for a variety of audiences.

Ideal Skills and Abilities:

• Prepare a variety of clear and concise administrative, financial, statistical, and analytical reports.
• Collect, interpret, analyze, and evaluate varied information and data.
• Work collaboratively in a team environment while taking direction from multiple program leads. 
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Follow processes and procedures. 
• Organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks for multiple business areas, while staying organized, and representing their teams to both internal and external partners. 
• Juggle multiple competing priorities and/or projects without missing deadlines or key milestones.
• Recommend and implement modifications to existing programs, systems, and procedures.

Ideal Knowledge:

• Strong grasp of/or ability to learn Valley Water processes and policies, preferably with the Request for Proposals (RFP) process, contracts, accounting, etc.
• Fundamentals of grants management.
• Principles of social and environmental justice. 
• Familiarity with managing public funds, such as the Safe, Clean Water and Natural Flood Protection Parcel Tax Program.

Ideal Training and Education:

Equivalent to an Associate’s degree.

Directly related experience may be substituted for the college requirement on the basis of one and one-half years of experience for one year of education to a maximum of two years.

Office of Civic Engagement (Position Code 1021)
Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

 

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite, after completion of the probationary period (one year).

About the PB&R Summer Intern Opportunity

The Parks, Beaches, and Recreation Department is where community fun meets local government operations! From summer camps and special events to aquatics, child care, senior services, and recreation programs, our team helps create the experiences that make Pacifica an amazing place to live, work, and play. This internship is a great opportunity for someone who wants real-world experience in a local government setting while getting exposure to a wide variety of projects. Interns will gain hands-on experience supporting day-to-day recreation operations, learning how programs are planned and delivered, and assisting with behind-the-scenes work that keeps everything running smoothly. If you’re someone who enjoys staying organized, working with a supportive team, and wants to learn what it’s really like to work in public service (while still being part of the fun side of government), this is a great opportunity to build skills and experience in a welcoming and energetic environment. • Supporting summer programs such as camps, classes, child care enrollment, and recreation registration

• Fielding inquiries from community members in person, by phone, and via email
• Assisting staff with organizing, sorting, and maintaining electronic and physical records
• Scanning and digitizing files to support department modernization efforts

• Supporting a variety of additional projects as assigned (no two days are exactly the same!)

• Current undergraduate student majoring in Recreation Administration, Public Administration, Business, Communications, Education, Kinesiology, or a related field preferred
• Interest in parks and recreation operations, community programming, or public service
• No prior recreation experience required; training will be provided
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

The Economic Development Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting business attraction and retention, marketing and tourism initiatives, special events, and strategic planning efforts aligned with the City’s adopted Economic Development Work Plan. This internship is ideal for a student interested in economic development, public policy, urban planning, communications, or community development. The intern will contribute to projects that directly support local businesses and enhance Pacifica’s commercial districts.

Responsibilities May Include (but Are Not Limited To):

• Assisting with creation of marketing and promotional materials to support local businesses and tourism efforts
• Supporting event planning and coordination for business-focused and community events
• Researching and identifying grant opportunities related to economic development, mobility, and placemaking initiatives
• Assisting with preparation of grant applications and supporting documentation
• Developing one-page informational materials for public distribution (ie: permitting guides, business resources, development summaries)
• Supporting social media and digital communications related to economic development initiatives
• Assisting with business visitation outreach and communication efforts
• Conducting research related to bike, pedestrian, and scooter mobility initiatives that support commercial districts

Education & Experience:

• Current undergraduate student majoring in Economics, Urban Planning, Public Administration, Business, Communications, Political Science, Marketing, or a related field
• Coursework in economic development, public policy, urban studies, marketing, transportation planning, or community development preferred
• Interest in municipal government and local economic sustainability
• Prior internship or project experience in communications, research, event coordination, or community engagement is desirable but not required

About the Program

The Summer Internship Program was developed in collaboration with the Next Generation Committee, sponsored by the City/County Managers Associations of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The program supports the development of emerging professionals and promotes careers in local government.

The Summer Internship Program is tentatively scheduled to run from June 15, 2026 through August 14, 2026 (8 weeks). End date may be adjusted based on the intern's schedule and availability.

Selected applicants will be invited to interview during a tentative window of March 23 – April 3, 2026, with flexibility as needed.

The City anticipates finalizing offers by April 24, 2026 to allow adequate time for summer scheduling and coordination. Internships are part-time (up to 25 hours per week), seasonal, at-will, and non-benefited positions.

The selected intern will assist with a variety of projects and ongoing assignments, which may include but are not limited to:

• Assisting with Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects, including design and construction

The City of Sunnyvale is recruiting for the position of Public Safety Records Specialist I for the Department of Public Safety. The Public Safety Records Specialist is responsible for performing a wide variety of administrative, technical, and clerical records support duties in the Records Division of the Department of Public Safety, including the maintenance of records and files, processing of data and reports, critical time-sensitive data entry, providing support to sworn personnel, and providing information to the public, outside agencies and departmental staff; and performs related work as required. The Records Division is staffed on a seven day/week, 24 hour/day schedule, including weekends and holidays.

The Administrative Aide (Hourly City Worker) is a part-time, hourly, at-will position that involves working approximately 15-25 hours per week, not to exceed 29 hours in a week, or 1000 hours per fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th).
