Job Description:

The Town of Los Altos Hills is recruiting a college intern to work in the Community Development Department. The intern will split time between the planning and building divisions of CDD. The role for planning will include support of both short range and long range planning.  Interns working on long range planning will work primarily as a research aide for the Town’s 2023-2031 certified Housing Element implementation.  For short range planning and the building division support interns will be focused on day to day permit activities, but may also work on other more general department duties as needed.

Examples of Duties:

• Conduct research and analysis of State Law and Fair Housing requirements for the Town’s 2023-2031 certified Housing Element implementation
• Conduct field investigations as necessary
• Prepare and conduct surveys in association with the Housing Element implementation progress and reporting
• Creating illustrative graphics, flyers and informational handouts
• Providing planning customer support at the public counter/virtual counter
• Other general Department tasks to include but not limited to: research, response to inquiries, assisting staff, filing, data entry, and record keeping

Qualifications:

• Completion of at least two (2) years and current enrolment in a Bachelor’s degree or Graduate degree program with major course work in urban planning, geography, architecture, environmental studies and/or related field.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Seasonal Maintenance Worker position performs a variety of entry-level and unskilled labor, maintenance and repair tasks in various public works operations, such as park maintenance, landscape maintenance, creek and catch basin maintenance, street maintenance, and janitorial and facility maintenance.  Weekend availability is at times required for picnic area prep, general park clean-up, etc.

Work Schedule:

• Planning to hire for start date in May 2026
• Work hours will not exceed 29 hours per week.
• Most hours will occur during maintenance operation hours: Saturday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.

POLICE ASSISTANT

Salary Range: $20.84 to $32.41/hour; non-benefitted position, DOE

DEFINITION

The Police Assistant is a civilian, non-sworn, uniformed position that is responsible for a variety of customer service-based interactions with the community. Duties include non-hazardous enforcement of municipal parking laws and regulations as well as clerical front counter tasks related to phone and walk-in contacts at the police department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Lieutenant and Traffic Sergeant. Projects are assigned, and the person usually works with very little supervision. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES

• Handle confidential administrative duties at the front desk. Greets telephone callers and visitors to department; screens and handles inquiries of a general or specific nature; takes messages.
• Takes information from the public regarding thefts, accidents, lost and found property, and other incidents that do not require the presence of a sworn law enforcement officer at the scene; completes standard police reports for review by staff supervisors or sworn supervisory staff.

• Perform a variety of research & staff work; prepare reports.
• Maintain records using computers and various filing systems.
• Coordinate Parking Permits for business employees.
• Enforces parking ordinances and the Town’s Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Program, issues parking citations; follows-up on complaints regarding abandoned or illegally parked vehicles; issues citations and arranges for the towing or other abatement measures. Receive and respond to complaints and reports of routine parking incidents from the public.
• Respond to public complaint of abandoned vehicles; document and schedule tows for abandoned vehicles; and ensures proper disposition of illegally parked vehicles; patrols city streets and issues citations on vehicles parked in an unlawful manner. Mark vehicles to detect abuse of timed areas.
• Operate computer equipment and two-way radio as related to employment.
• Directs traffic at crash, crime, and/or congestion scenes.
• Investigates and prepares reports on burglary, petty theft, lost and found property, missing persons, property damage, accidents, Town Ordinance violations, abandoned vehicles and other incidents.
• Assists with maintaining evidence and property in the Evidence Room. Coordinates receiving and cataloging evidence and found property, maintaining records of property movement, processing, and disposition.
• Assist with transporting, storing, photographing, releasing, or destroying property pursuant to state law and established procedures.
• As required testifies in court.

• Must be flexible with hours and available to work some evenings and occasional weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge: 

Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Ability to:     

Effectively communicate verbally and through written correspondence; understand and follow verbal and written instructions, prepare clear and accurate reports, work cooperatively with others contacted in the course of work, handle multiple work requests under pressure, read and interpret maps, type at a speed of no less than 40WPM and have excellent customer service skills. Operation of radio communication equipment is required. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and stand outdoors for extended periods while performing traffic control assignments. Required to wear safety equipment, including a vest, belt, and uniform.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience: 

One (1) year of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience involving substantial public contact, or the exchange of detailed verbal information, including interpreting/clarifying rules, regulations, policies, or procedures and handling complaints as a primary element of the work performed. Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

Education:   

High school graduation or equivalent.

The City of San Mateo Public Works Department is seeking a Traffic and Lighting Technician

The Department

The Public Works Department is comprised of the Engineering and Facilities Services Division (EFSD) and the Environmental Services Division (ESD). Each division is led by a Deputy Director reporting to the Director of Public Works. The department is responsible for the City’s major capital projects and infrastructure including streets, street lights, traffic signals, sewer and storm conveyance systems, wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, a major lagoon, and dams and levees. The Position

The Traffic and Lighting Technician performs skilled electrical and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of traffic control signage, traffic signal equipment, and street lights; and guides the work of and trains other maintenance personnel, and performs related work as required.  Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Guide and participate in the work of other maintenance personnel.  Ability to set-up work zone safety and prepare traffic control work plans.
• Inspect, install, remove, and repair signal controls and auxiliary equipment such as light standards, control boxes, light fixtures, lamps, and circuitry; diagnose malfunctions; adjust and replace electronic and mechanical components.
• Inspect, install, remove and repair street lights and auxiliary equipment.
• Repair, replace or modify electric and electronic components, controllers, relays, switches, fuses, timers and other parts; design and construct special test equipment for shop testing of electronic components.
• Investigate complaints and reports of signal and traffic light malfunctions; adjust, repair or remove defective equipment; make field repairs of damaged equipment.
• Identify, locate and indicate with appropriate identification markers underground utilities (USA); respond to USA work orders within regulatory requirements; and document services accordingly.
• Be available for standby assignments in accordance with Department policies and procedures.
• Assist in the design of electrical circuits and systems for street lighting and traffic signals.
• Inspect the work of contractors during the course of construction and upon completion.
• Monitor traffic control computer and make adjustments as necessary.

The Traffic and Lighting Technician receives general direction from the Field Maintenance Manager and direct supervision from a Public Works Supervisor or higher level department staff and may exercise technical or functional direction over and provide work review to a Traffic Safety Worker or Maintenance Worker I/II.

Program Assistant - Receptionist

Salary Range: $18.52 - $30.68/hour, depending on experience.

DEFINITION

Perform a wide variety of general clerical and/ or operational support duties at the Danville Community Center and/ or Senior Center. Incumbent serves as the facility receptionist, assisting with customer service-related questions and issues, and directing callers and visitors according to established procedures.
 

• This is a part-time temporary, non-benefitted position.
• 0-20 hours per week; not-to-exceed 950 hours per calendar year.

SUPERVISION

Direct supervision is received from the Administrative Assistant with indirect supervision from the Recreation Superintendent. May exercise supervision of part-time personnel and volunteers as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Essential duties are inclusive of, but not limited to the following:

• Serve as first point of contact with the public; responds to information requests regarding services, classes, and events offered by the Town by email, in person or over the phone.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Business Operations Coordinator (BOC) is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring efficient systems to manage the District’s business office, properties, entrepreneurial enterprises, service and vendor contracts, media management, and IT support services. This includes ensuring compliance with regulatory mandates, facility requirements, and workplace safety.

The BOC is a full-time exempt position that reports directly to the CEO.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. 1. Provides comprehensive administrative and operational support to ensure effective implementation and community impact.
   1. Coordinates District-sponsored and community outreach events—in both virtual and in-person formats—in collaboration with District leadership.
   2. Provides oversight of the District office operations to identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, inventory and supplies management, document, and key security, tracking annual policy review and report filing requirements, and utilization of classroom facilities.
   3. Maintains a clean, well-organized office environment for team and visitors.
   4. Assists the Strategic Initiatives Director in managing the Community Health Investment portfolio, including utilizing and maintaining the District’s grant management software to track and support the community grants program.
   5. Oversees and manages district office operations and leasing budgets.
   6. Maintains IT services, triaging issues, tracking performance of various pieces of equipment, and helping identify IT issues that may benefit from more user training.
   7. Assists with accounting tasks as directed by CEO, including processing bank deposits and printing checks with Staff Accountant.
   8. Maintains a system for managing and regularly auditing vendor contracts to ensure compliance with performance obligations and identify opportunities for cost and service improvements.

   3. Establishes and carrying out a preventative maintenance program for all buildings in collaboration with the CFO and property manager.

   2. Serves as primary liaison with the District’s communications and website professionals
   3. Serves as primary point person for coordinating, producing, and tracking analytics of external communications for websites, e-newsletter, social media, and related materials, in collaboration with the CEO, Directors, and District communications and marketing professionals.
4. In the absence of the Executive Assistant:
   1. Provides administrative support to Board Members, Board Committees, including scheduling meetings, preparing and distributing noticed meeting materials, and coordinating meeting logistics.
   2. Supports the CEO and Board with daily calendar management, communications, event and conference bookings, annual board policy review, staff meetings, and District transparency recertifications.

This is a full-time position. Compensation range based on experience: $55,000 - $85,000.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Equipment Parts Technician in the Public Works Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to plan, monitor, and manage the ordering, purchasing, storing, billing, issuing and maintenance control of equipment parts, accessories and supplies utilized in the service and repair of the City vehicles and equipment and to perform other related duties.

There are two shop locations – one at the Corporation Yard which focuses on light duty vehicles and one at the Transfer Station which focuses on heavy duty vehicles. This is an amazing opportunity for a self starter to organize the parts room and support the staff, the division, and the entire City fleet.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience ordering, purchasing, issuing, and maintaining electronic inventory systems for heavy equipment parts and/or automotive parts and accessories.

Other requirements include possessing a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequent walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and bending at the waist. Ability to hear automotive sounds, read fine print, and view a computer monitor. Sufficient strength and stamina to lift and transport parts weighing up to 80 pounds. Manual dexterity for detailed mechanical work and computer use. 

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to hot and cold environments. Noise level ranges from moderate to high. Potential exposure to hazardous materials and emergency conditions. Must be available to work evening and weekend shifts.

The candidate should be a confident, organized, and enthusiastic self-starter able to work well with a large, diverse staff.  The successful candidate will oversee and coordinate office support functions, including project management and other related duties as required.  Good written and oral communications skills are required. 

Typical duties may include the following:

Provides oversight to one or multiple programmatic areas, depending on the department to which assigned; ensures that work is completed in an appropriate manner and that program goals are met; recommends and implements policy or procedural changes related to the programmatic area(s); may develop the budget and time schedules for the programmatic area(s). Conducts administrative, operational, budgetary, financial, procedural or other information or research projects related to the department or functional area to which assigned; analyzes alternatives and makes recommendations regarding such matters as administrative policies, budget development, staffing, productivity and other matters. Attends to a variety of office administrative details such as following up on projects, transmitting information, keeping informed of departmental activities, processing payroll forms, arranging equipment and supply purchase, equipment maintenance, attending meetings and serving on a variety of committees. Confers with staff of other City departments, representatives of government, community, business and public agencies and the public. Initiates specified correspondence independently for signature by appropriate management, supervisory or professional staff; reviews finished materials for completeness, accuracy, format, compliance with policies and procedures, and appropriate English usage; uses a computer or word processor and appropriate word processing, desktop publishing and spreadsheet software. Receives and screens visitors and telephone calls, providing information which requires tact, discretion and the interpretation of policies and procedures; takes messages or refers the caller to the proper person. Researches and compiles a variety of informational materials from sources both inside and outside the office; summarizes such information as directed and may prepare reports from such materials. Organizes and maintains various office files, including personnel and tickler files; purges files as required. Provides supervision to office support staff; plans, assigns and reviews work; trains staff in work procedures. May serve as secretary to a Board or Commission, preparing agendas, assembling and distributing materials and taking minutes; may provide staff support to Commission members. Uses standard office equipment, using a computer, in the course of the work; may drive a personal or City motor vehicle in order to attend meetings or deliver or pick up materials. Perform work with a record of regular attendance and punctuality.
