Summary Description

Under immediate supervision performs semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work assigned to the streets division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level class in the Street Maintenance Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Street Maintenance Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or non directly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Handle complaints and answer questions from the public.
2. Remove blight and illegal dumps from city property such as parks, right of ways, roadways, alleys, walkways, sidewalks and refuse disposal. 
3. Remove debris, shrubbery, brush, trash, tires, appliances, electronics, and miscellaneous items.
4. Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
5. Abates graffiti.
6. Maintain logs of daily activities.
7. Assist in other areas as needed.
8. Perform related duties as required.
9. Repair and replace street surfaces, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters including back filling trenches and evacuations.
10. Perform the maintenance, repair, construction, and installation work of streets, storm drain, parking lots, street lights, traffic striping, and traffic control signs and signals.
11. Remove hazards from the roadway and other public rights of way.
12. Operate a variety of motorized equipment and specialized maintenance equipment.
13. Perform repaving, patching, overlaying, chuck hole, and crack sealing repair of asphalt.
14. Perform underground service alert locating, marking and notification.
15. Lay out and install traffic signs and pavement markings.
16. Repair and maintain storm drain lift stations.
17. Conduct traffic count surveys.
18. Maintain storm detention ponds, including cleaning, repairing, and spraying weeds.
19. Respond to hazardous materials spills.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of maintenance and repair activities related to area of assignment.

Common tools, materials, and motorized vehicles and equipment used in assigned area of responsibility.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, the Water Resources Source Control Inspector performs inspections and sampling of industrial, commercial, and residential sources of discharge to the wastewater and storm water systems to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations; inspects hazardous and toxic materials storage areas; reviews building plans for compliance with building code regulations and to ensure discharger compliance with all applicable regulators; conducts public outreach activities; and performs other duties as assigned. BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

The City of Belmont Parks & Recreation Department is recruiting for the position of Recreation Leaders for Summer 2026. Recreation Leader Requirement

This is a part-time position.  Hours will range from 19 to 37 hours per week with no weekend shifts.

We are now hiring up to 35 part-time Lifeguards for our aquatics program!

Located at the McBean Memorial Pool, our Lifeguards are an essential part of the aquatics recreational programs that we offer our residents.  Be a part of a team that allows everyone to beat the heat and have fun!

We are looking for candidates with qualities such as reliability, creativity, dependability and enthusiasm.  The aquatics program will require you to work various days, weekends or evenings, but we are flexible with schedules.

Seasonal employees are limited to working no more than 999 hours in a fiscal year.

DEFINITION:

Under the direct or general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, performs a variety of duties to supervise the pool, decks, and additional areas of an aquatic facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)

• Maintain constant surveillance as assigned to safeguard swimmers from drowning and other accidents.
• Maintain discipline and orderly conduct among patrons and enforce all pertinent City pool rules and regulations in order to maintain a safe environment.
• Promote and enforce water safety procedures; effect swimming rescues; render first aid and CPR as required.
• Assist in the planning, promoting and organizing of prescribed Red Cross programs and special events.
• Perform pool facility maintenance functions as required.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Perform heavy manual labor; learn to operate a variety of equipment; work with tools related to recreational maintenance. The position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The incumbent needs to have the ability to hear and speak for purposes of communication. The position also requires both near and far vision when administering programs and operating equipment. The need to lift, carry and push equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. The incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (The following are a representative sample of the KSAs necessary to perform essential duties of the position.)

About the Position

The San Carlos Recreation Department is looking for seasonal summer Recreation Leaders who are responsible, energetic, and enjoy working outdoors with children in a fun and positive atmosphere.

Recreation Leader positions are fun!  The City works with applicant’s interests and strengths to place them in the appropriate Recreation Leader opening.

The Recreation Leader I classification is the entry-level position in the Recreation Leader Series. The Recreation Leader II classification is the second-level position in the Recreation Leader Series. Positions in this part-time classification perform routine, basic work under direct supervision, in the planning and conducting of a wide variety of recreation activities. Receives supervision from a Recreation Department staff member; may work under functional supervision of a Recreation Leader II or Program Coordinator as assigned.

Work schedule: Seasonal Recreation Leaders are assigned to the Summer Day Camp and Youth Center programs working with children ages 4 -12 years. This summer’s camp program runs from June 15 - August 14, 2026. Training for Recreation Leader I & II will take place the week of June 8, 2026 (mandatory in-service training). Recreation Leaders must be able to work during this time period for at least 8 of the 10 weeks and have the ability to plan and conduct exciting youth recreation activities.

Positions in this seasonal classification perform routine, basic work under direct supervision, in the planning and conducting of a wide variety of recreation activities. Positions require a commitment of 40 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Shifts may vary based on camp needs.

Essential Duties

As a Recreation Leader for San Carlos Parks and Recreation you will:

• Be a part of a motivated, enthusiastic, and responsible team focused on making a difference in the community.
• Learn valuable leadership skills with monthly professional development and training opportunities.
• Assist in Community Events including, Hometown Days, Music in the Park, Art and Wine Faire, and Movie Nights.

As a Recreation Leader working Summer Camp, you will help implement and perform some of the following activities:

Summer Camps

• Daily enrichment and recreational activities.
• Directing program participants and managing behavior as appropriate.
• Ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for youth participants.
• Supervision and facilitation of Youth Center special events and participants.
• Site maintenance duties and inspection of recreational equipment.

We are offering two types of Summer Camps, Adventure Camp for children ages 4 to 12, and Sports Camps (Flag Football, Volleyball, Softball, Baseball, and Multi-Sport) for ages 5-12.
