Position Duties

Salary range(s) for this classification is$93,933.84- $114,114.00.This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience. 

As part of the Engineering Services Division, Survey Section of the Public Works Department is responsible for delivering land surveying services on a variety of City projects including street widening/improvements, storm and sanitary facilities, library/community center/fire station sites, and airfield projects. These land surveying services include, but are not limited to the following: topography, property acquisition, construction staking, pavement marking layout, and monument preservation.

The Survey Section is currently recruiting to fill one (1) Instrument Person vacancy. An Instrument Person performs a variety of sub-professional surveying and engineering functions of moderate difficulty either on a survey crew in the field or in the Survey Section office.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

• Acts as instrument person on a survey party.
• Records field notes and prepares maps and sketches from survey data.
• Sets up, adjusts, and operates all types of survey instruments.
• Provides lead direction and training to other survey personnel.
• Uses modern, survey-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
• Calculates grades and enters data into field books.
• Turns angles and extends horizontal line using a total station.
• Uses the level to obtain vertical control.
• Uses the level, total station, rod, targets to perform topographic surveying in order to describe the existing features of a piece of land in order that it may be reproduced as a plan map.
• Locates survey points by measurement, magnetometer and from maps of former surveys.
• Assist with transferring electronic field data to a PC workstation, processing and interpreting the data, and checking for errors.
• Assists with producing high-quality, computer-generated topography maps and tables using sophisticated engineering software.

This is the journey level class in a four class surveying series. This class differs from the next higher class of Survey Party Chief in that incumbents of the latter perform sub-professional surveying work and are usually responsible for completing only a segment of a surveying program or project.

Position and Duties

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services is recruiting for Part-Time, Unbenefited Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions in the Recreation Services Division (RS) for the Citywide Aquatics programming.

The Lifeguard classification is covered by the Minimum Wage Police and pay starts at $18.45 hourly.
The Instructor Lifeguard classification is covered by the Pay Floor Rate and pay starts at $30.48 hourly.

These positions may be required to work variable shifts between the hours of 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Monday – Saturday during the dates of June 15-August 8. Additionally, a MANDATORY training for both Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions will take place starting the week of June 8, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. These positions are part-time, unbenefited with a limit of less than 20 hours per week or less than 1,040 hours per year. There is no guarantee of hours or longevity. All programs adhere to Santa Clara County, Public Health guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of staff. Face coverings and Personal Protective Equipment are provided. Staff may assist with daily health screenings, cleaning, and sanitization in City programs following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. 

Note: Candidates are not required to possess the Lifeguard Training certificate at the time of completing the application or to interview for the position. If selected for the position of Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will offer Lifeguard Training certification classes, if needed. If selected for the position of Instructor Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will be offering Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's (WSI) certification classes, if needed. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification and the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification age requirement are at least 15 years old.

If selected to move forward in the conditional offer process, the Lifeguard certification pre course swimming skills test that consists of the following:
•a 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke.
•a 2-minute tread using legs only
•the ability to retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, to the surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds. 

Lifeguard:
Lifeguards supervise the conduct of swimmers to maintain safety in the swimming pool. Lifeguards also enforce swimming pool rules and may participate in swim instruction programs; observe swimmers in swimming pools; provide warnings to those who violate the safety rules of the pool and expelling them, if necessary, because of willful disobedience of the rules; rescues swimmers who are in distress; and administers artificial respiration when necessary, according to the prescribed method. Lifeguards may also train and direct the work of lower-level workers as assigned and participate in pool maintenance. Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training’s Authorization Certificate is REQUIRED for the position of Lifeguard. 

Instructor Lifeguard:
In addition to the duties identified for Lifeguards, Instructor Lifeguards also organize and conduct swimming instruction classes for beginners, intermediate, or advanced swimmers at a swimming pool. Duties will include teaching swimming to children, adult individuals, and groups. Instructor Lifeguards may officiate at competitive swim meets. Instructor Lifeguards must also be able to instruct in the techniques of swimming and lifesaving. Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Authorization Certificate (WSI) is REQUIRED for the position of Instructor Lifeguard.

Silicon Valley Power (SVP) currently provides over 40 percent of Santa Clara’s electricity from carbon-free renewable resources. The Position: 

Under direct supervision, the Assistant Electric Utility Engineer performs a variety of entry-level professional electric utility engineering field and office work in Electric system planning, electric system design, construction and/or maintenance programs.  SVP invites applications from dynamic and innovative qualified candidates for an entry level engineering position. Assistant Electric utility engineer will be part engineering team to conduct design, establish standards and implement construction projects. Valley Water is seeking an Associate Water Resources Specialist to provide professional-level analytical and technical support for complex water supply planning and imported water initiatives critical to Valley Water’s long-term water reliability.

This position will provide support in the following areas:

• Development of water supply planning projects, including the Sites Reservoir Project, Sisk Dam Raise Project, and groundwater banking initiatives.
• Development and administration of water transfer agreements and other agreements needed to flexibly convey water to Valley Water facilities.
• Review, analysis, and comment on Bay-Delta regulatory issues affecting imported water supplies.

The Associate Water Resources Specialist works with a high degree of competence and judgment on assigned analyses, studies, and project components, while operating within established program direction and in coordination with senior staff and project leads.

The City of Dixon is recruiting qualified Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I/II applicants for the 2026 Aquatic season.

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor and Senior Lifeguard/Swim Instructor, Lifeguard/Swim Instructor performs a variety of duties to ensure the City of Dixon swimming pool is a safe and enjoyable aquatic facility. Supervises pool patrons, enforces pool rules, performs first aid and emergency rescues, instructs swim lessons, performs cashiering duties, leads recreational activities; performs related and other work as required.

Staff may be expected to work weekends and on fixed holidays.  Those who work on a City Holiday will earn 1 1/2 times their base hourly salary.

This position is subject to random controlled substance testing and/or breath alcohol testing.

About the Position: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) is seeking two Engineering & Construction (E&C) Interns in the Engineering & Construction Department. Under close guidance of seasoned project management staff (including licensed engineers and landscape architects), the E&C Interns will support professional level design and construction project management activities, including the design and implementation of capital improvement and natural resource preservation and protection projects; coordinate project related assignments with other Midpen staff, outside consultants, contractors and regulatory agencies; assist with bidding process and construction efforts; and perform related work as required.  The expected start dates for internships are in May or June 2026.  

Basic Requirements: Current enrollment or a recent graduate (within the last 12 months) in an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program, or trade school in a relevant field. Successful candidates will have a background in civil or structural engineering, construction management, landscape architecture, or a related field, experience with Microsoft Office suite and AutoCAD; and demonstrated expertise/enthusiasm in project management, construction management, and environmental conservation. This position requires great attention to detail, excellent communication skills, the ability to work well both in team settings and independently, and the willingness to occasionally work in rugged, remote settings.  Knowledge of construction management, landscape design, cost estimating, permitting, utilities, Adobe Creative Suite and Sketchup is a plus. Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required.

Working Conditions/Schedule: This position will be divided between on-site work, remote office work, and field visits for construction field observations and coordination. Interns will be expected to be in the field anywhere between 3 to 5 days per week.  They will be able to work from home up to 2 days.  Personal protective equipment (hardhat, eye protection, and boots) will be required at construction sites. This position will operate in the E&C Department at Midpen offices in Los Altos, California. Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone in wild land areas and traversing rough, difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation. Work may take place during inclement weather conditions. Field work will require driving in remote areas on dirt roads, working in temperatures ranging from cold and blustery to hot and dry. Ideal candidates will be comfortable working in these types of field conditions, as well as in an office environment. Hours of work are flexible and can be designed around academic schedule requirements. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, and will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 3-9 month period. This is a non-benefited position.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision (Assistant Engineer) or general supervision (Associate Engineer), performs professional and technical engineering work in design, land development, or capital improvements.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Assistant Engineer - This is the entry level class in the engineering series. Positions in this class possess the applicable educational and training background required of classes in the engineering series, yet typically have only limited or unrelated work experience. The Assistant Engineer class is distinguished from the Engineering Associate by the performance of less than the full range of duties as assigned to the journey level class within this series. This class is typically used as a training class. Incumbents work under direct supervision while learning job tasks.

Associate Engineer - This is the journey level class in the engineering series. Positions in this class possess the applicable educational background and work experience required for classes in the engineering series. The Associate Engineer is distinguished from the Assistant Engineer by the performance of the full range of duties with only minimal instruction or assistance. Incumbents work independently, seeking assistance only as new or unusual situations arise. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Assistant Engineer class.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1.       Perform professional and technical engineering work relative to assigned area of responsibility, such as design, land development, and capital improvements.

2.       Design and prepare plans and specifications for public works projects including pumping stations, streets, storm drains, sewer lines, and related projects; research project design requirements; perform calculations and prepare estimates of time and material costs.

3.       Answer inquiries from realtors, developers, engineers, and the general public.

4.       Develop revised design and construction standards for public works structures and appurtenances.

5.       Serve as construction inspector to ensure compliance on City projects, subdivisions, and encroachments.

6.       Investigate field problems affecting property owners, contractors, and maintenance operations; resolve problems or refer as appropriate; coordinate or perform field work associated with infrastructure projects.

7.       Administer contracts; coordinate and review the work of outside consultants; review and recommend payments and billing for contracted services related to assigned projects.

8.       Write legal descriptions for right of way and easement dedications.

9.       Issue encroachment, water, and sewer permits.

10.    Request and participate in the collection of survey and mapping data.

11.    Prepare estimates and feasibility reports for new or modified services and structures.

12.    Participate in the plan check, review, and processing of plans for private developments affecting City streets, sewers, drains and related public works facilities; assure compliance with appropriate codes, ordinances, rules and regulations.

13.    Attend and participate in professional group meetings; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the field of municipal engineering; incorporate new developments as appropriate into programs.

14.    Prepare visual presentations and reports.

15.    Prepare special engineering studies and reports.

16.    Coordinate public works activities with other City departments, divisions and sections and with outside agencies.

17.    Perform related duties as required.
